Maidenhead Care Home Recreates The Magic of Cinema For Residents

A Maidenhead care home has joined this summer’s hottest trend and created its very own outdoor cinema.

Colleagues at St Mark’s Bupa Care Home transformed the home’s garden into an outdoor screening experience including a VIP bar area and pick-and-mix sweet station. Using a large projector screen and a state-of-the-art sound system, the care home created the ultimate garden cinema. To ensure all residents could clearly see the film, a gazebo was placed over the big-screen and seating was spaced out to make room for those in wheelchairs.

Loraine Kitley, 86, resident at Bupa’s St Mark’s Care Home, said: “What a fantastic experience. It was so much fun going out in to the garden, choosing my favourite sweets and watching a great film. It was great to do something new and I can’t wait to visit the outdoor cinema again.”

Movie classics, including; Mamma Mia, Summer Holiday and Singing in the Rain, were among the films screened at the outdoor cinema, which had residents singing along to the timeless soundtracks.

Senior Activity Co-ordinator at Bupa’s St Marks Care Home, Kirstie Seal, added: “I always like to come up with new activities for residents to enjoy and when one resident said she missed going to the cinema, I thought why not bring the cinema to her? Our residents love watching films and love the outdoors, so I thought the best way to create a cinema experience for them was to move the movies outdoors.

“It was fantastic to see how excited the residents were to be choosing their preferred drink and own pick-and-mix and then taking their seat, it was like they really were at the cinema. We will be hosting more outdoor cinema sessions and outdoor concerts for residents to enjoy in the coming weeks.”

St Mark’s Bupa Care Home is situated in Maidenhead and welcomes residents in need of residential or nursing care, including those living with both early stage and advanced dementia, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease. For further information, please visit www.bupa.co.uk
