My family cannot praise the staff enough for all the care & attention they gave our dad whilst in the home. He was so very well looked after by everyone which gave us great comfort & reassurance. We, as the family, were also very well looked after, which was greatly appreciated. Highly recommend The
Orchards Care Home.

My Mum lived at Rose Cottage for nearly three years. The care throughout that time was excellent, but was particularly so in the last few weeks of her life. The staff were amazing and all aspects of her care were delivered with great compassion and dignity. As a family, we were also looked after beautifully
which enabled us to spend those last precious weeks without any concerns apart from looking after and being with Mum.

So impressed with the way the home is being run. Such a positive and friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in the door.
Staff seem much happier in their work, and there seems to be a real connection between management and what goes on "on the floor", definitely not shut away in the office all the
time!

We visited Rose Cottage over a year ago. My Dad was very impressed with the service but did not feel ready to move. Dad's name was placed on a waiting list. We were both impressed with the attitude and philosophy of Rose Cottage. Later, I supported Dad at Rose Cottage where he was welcomed to attend
activity sessions. A room became available and Dad had a six-week trial which was reassuring to him. Dad stayed. We as a family were extremely impressed with the whole of the service, everything about it is positive - staff are so caring and put the resident at the centre of their approach. Nothing is too much trouble. At Dad's first care review, he said "Well it's like paradise really". Personally, I have had an exceptionally positive experience at Rose Cottage and I would recommend it. We are truly grateful for the care, support, and understanding that Dad receives on a daily basis. Lastly, there is lots of fun and laughter at Rose Cottage - my Dad loves the conversations he has with staff.

My mother recently moved up to the top floor of the home as she required more care. The transition was well managed and the staff communication was excellent. They remembered to say mum likes to use her pretty plates at meal times. Mum has settled in well into her new environment due to the support
of the staff and home. Thank you.

From my first visit to Rose Cottage managers and staff were welcoming and supportive, encouraging us to visit regularly with Mum to help develop familiarity with the setting prior to a room becoming available. Mum moved in over two years ago now. We were impressed with the support offered to Mum to
help her settle in her new home, especially to me as I initially found the transition from full-time carer back to daughter a challenge. We feel that residents are looked after with love and kindness and treated with respect and dignity. Staff are friendly, open, considerate, and helpful and visitors are welcome. The activities team offers a range of activities throughout the week, catering to the different interests and needs of residents. As a regular visitor, I enjoy supporting the activities Mum joins in with as this gives us quality time doing something together. Mum's experience at Rose Cottage is positive and we are very grateful for the love and care she is shown daily.

Rose Cottage

Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

My mother has been living at Rose Cottage since August 2023; we feel blessed to have found such a loving home for her. The staff learns to know the residents in detail, so recognise when someone's not feeling well, or needs help, even if they can't articulate that for themselves. A wide variety of activities
is on offer, from table games to armchair exercise to trips out to visits and performances from amongst the local community; and the menu always provides a good choice, with dietary needs (eg soft food) catered for. Visitors are always welcome, and for occasions like residents' birthdays, or for everyone at Christmas, they go to a lot of trouble to arrange special events.
The home is bright and comfortable - and has the best home-from-home atmosphere in a care home setting that I have seen. Nowhere is perfect; occasionally there are minor matters that need attention, but overall these are relatively unimportant. We trust our mum to the care of Rose Cottage with great confidence.

Reply from Jennifer Dade, Registered Manager at Rose Cottage

We know we are biased but our activity team are amazing! They are passionate about life beginning again and for residents to have active, meaningful, and engaging lives where they can take ownership of their environment and not be seen as passive recipients. We feel privileged to be entrusted with care of our residents and you sharing your confidence in your review means a great deal. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.

When I first contacted Rose Cottage they were friendly and professional. They let me view the residence promptly and I was very impressed with what I saw. The home really is a home from home. It was welcoming and cosy. Not clinical but felt warm and friendly. They have a residential bit and a dementia
bit which is secure.
Once we had decided we wanted to choose Rose Cottage the transition was really smooth and I felt really supported.
The rooms are nice with lovely views of the gardens from each window. The entertainment is brilliant! They do so many lovely things with the residents but there is also no pressure to join in if it's not wanted.
I would highly recommend Rose Cottage to anyone looking into a care home.

My mother is a resident at Rose Cottage and has dementia. She joined them in July 2024 after being cared for at home by family members and we grew increasingly aware of her declining health. We knew at once that we had made the right decision in placing her in the care of Rose Cottage. From the first
visit, the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. Some of the staff knew her and made her feel very welcome on her first day.
The manager and all the staff have been very supportive and any concerns have been dealt with quickly and professionally.
When my mother was unwell staff contacted me immediately and medical assistance was sought straight away. The communication by phone and email had been open and honest and I felt reassured by any concerns that I or other family members might have.
The change in my mother has been lovely to see and she in encouraged to take part in the daily activity programme that the home provides.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience of Rose Cottage. Residents who live with dementia can find it especially difficult to move to a new setting and we are so pleased this has been a positive experience. I was very ill when I arrived at the care home, 29 May 2023, and I was convinced I would be dead by the end of July. But the care I have been given - from tests to a complete change in medication - have helped me stop being wheelchair-bound, learn to walk again and become a useful resident. I lost my
sense of taste and smell a few years ago but food is more than that. I enjoy the feel of what's in my mouth. But since Autumn 2023 stews/casseroles have dominated the menu and repetitive vegetables have added to the boredom. We thought a new chef would liven things up. Is he being given sufficient funds to buy the ingredients or is he limited to buying cheap?

Thank you for your review. I am delighted that your move to The Orchards has been so transformative for you and that your mobility has so greatly improved. It is wonderful to read that you now feel you are a useful addition to our community. We most certainly agree! I very much appreciate your feedback on the menu. Following our recent conversation I hope you are reassured that sufficient funds are being made available to ensure we provide tasty and varied meal choices. I am confident you will continue to see current improvements in the weeks and months ahead.

Overall care is good. Management never see the residents are the main cause of very good carers leaving.
The food is generally poor - so no value for the amount residents pay.

My dad was very well looked after at The Orchards. It was very clean and comfortable. A lovely garden the residents can sit in. The staff were great, but the management was very unprofessional and not upfront in the way they communicated with the family.

Reply from Donna Mills, Support Manager at The Orchards

Many thanks for submitting your review, we really appreciate honest feedback as it helps us to reflect and ultimately continue to improve our services. As discussed in our recent correspondence, we regret that the lack of communication from the hospital regarding your father's care meant we were unable to effectively communicate with you in the way we would have liked to. We value transparency in our communication with our residents and their relatives, so we are disappointed circumstances outside of our control meant we fell short in this instance. We are glad that you were happy with the care your father received from us, and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him.

I live overseas. My mother recently passed away as a resident of the Orchards Care Home in Ely. They called me and I flew over to support Mum in her passing. I would like to share my feelings of gratitude for the beyond-excellent care provided by the staff. I visited Mum in the secure unit every day
for 3 weeks before her passing. I was always kindly received and I was able to see the extraordinary kindness of the staff shown to all the residents of this special unit for people with dementia. The staff were caring, friendly and kind, they were also very skilled in managing the significant cognitive and physical needs safely of these special residents. I would also like to mention that the home was superbly clean and tidy and I was struck by the complete lack of any smells that I often find in care homes. The management are competent leaders and very approachable. I had complete confidence in their care of Mum.

My mum has been at Rose Cottage for nearly a year now and for both of us life is a lot better. Mum is very well looked after and I can stop worrying about her (I still do worry a bit, but it's normal) as I know she is safe and well looked after. I can actually take time out and actually have a holiday

My uncle at ninety-six, having long refused to give up living alone in his bungalow, at last agreed to move into Rose Cottage. Within days he was a different man; happy, sociable, loving all the activities, greatly appreciating the delicious meals and not having to worry about his house and garden any
longer. The staff at Rose Cottage brought out the best in my uncle and he loved his time there. For the first time in his life, he had friends. The staff are very kind and caring. The home is clean (no bad smells!) and the gardens delightful.

Mum moved at short notice in March 2023. We are delighted with the home. The staff are friendly and helpful and the activities team organise interesting things for residents to do on a daily basis. Mum has settled very well and we don't have to worry about her now that she is in the home. The managers
are the same as when we first discussed the possibility of Mum moving into the home four years ago and everyone seems very caring. There are posher, newer care homes in the area, but Rose Cottage has a family feel to it and the staff are great. We feel very lucky there was a vacancy when we needed one.
