My brother is cared for with dignity and compassion. The staff are very professional and always keep me informed regarding my brother's needs. Over the many years he has been at Town Thorns we have never had any concerns, in fact his health and wellbeing have improved. We are very happy with his care.

We visited Town Thorns on 9th January 2025 to visit a long-standing family friend. What a lovely, friendly place. From the word go we were very happy that our friend was living in such beautiful surroundings. The receptionist on duty was lovely to us, as were all the staff that we met during our visit.
We had our minds put at ease knowing that she is being really cared for and is not just a number.
The hospital staff, including the nurses (where she was previously) could really learn some lessons from the staff at Town Thorns Care Centre. Thank you for your kindness, humour and professionalism, it is appreciated. God bless you all.

My parents have been living in Town Thorns Care Home for two years. They were able to move in together at very short notice, both with very different needs. Every effort has been made for them to stay together in the same unit which is very important to them both and for us as a family.
Their needs
are regularly assessed, addressed and communicated to myself. The atmosphere in their house is very relaxed and informal and care staff are always efficient to react to requests.
My parents are very settled in Town Thorns and I would recommend considering it for your loved ones.

Weekends boring, nothing to do. No entertainment. No drinks in reception area, all locked up. No wet room in ensuite room.

Reply from Debbie Dale, Care Centre Manager at Town Thorns Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I'm surprised you find the weekends boring, you attended our evening event just last Saturday. We have spoken to you about the drinks for relatives in reception, they were reinstated a while ago. Regarding your bathroom, all of our ensuite bathrooms are wet rooms, one of our maintenance team will check everything is OK with yours.

My mum has been a resident since before COVID. Town Thorns were one of the first to set up safe and secure working environments to keep everyone well, the staff did an amazing job. Thanks to all of the lovely, caring, attentive staff, Mum continues to enjoy the community, the friendly, family, fun
atmosphere at Town Thorns. The residents' needs are met and nothing is too much trouble. They take time to find out what all the residents are interested in, their favourite foods and drinks and offer a wide range of fun and exciting activities. Never a dull moment. Lovely accommodation and roomy day rooms, lots of space and such a lovely rural setting. Wonderful wildlife, nature and planted gardens to relax in and spend time with friends. Always greeted by the friendly, helpful staff. So glad we were recommended Town Thorns for Mum. We were unable to give Mum the level of care that she needed and we are so grateful she really enjoys living life at Town Thorns.

My brother has been a resident for about four months. From the beginning the staff have asked about and listened to my brother's care needs and preferences giving client-led support and providing the best possible care for him. In addition they have supported me and kept me informed of changes to his
care needs. The staff are always patient, kind and courteous. The doctor's surgery attached to the care home have also given excellent support. I am so glad we found Town Thorns!

My husband has been a resident of Jackson House for just over a year. The care he is receiving is second to none.
Although I would rather he was at home with me, I know I could not possibly give him the same unstinting attention he gets from the wonderful staff that care for him.
The garden, courtyard
and communal rooms are all lovely and quite hotel-like. The admin staff and catering staff all appear to be as aware of the residents as any of the care workers. I think the ethos that drives the training and service is commendable.

My dad has been at Town Thorns for nearly 18 months and I can’t fault the care he receives. He is really happy and settled and I think this is down to the staff, they are amazing, and nothing is too much trouble. The facilities are brilliant, and there is always entertainment and activities. Dad wasn’t
that keen initially but he now loves taking part in cooking, crafting, gardening and trips out. The grounds are beautiful, Dad loves to look out at the old house or go for a walk down to the pond. Inside the rooms and communal areas are lovely and always kept very clean. So glad we moved Dad here.

My family and I have been really impressed with the care and attention my Mum has received in the last 6 months since being placed there for further assessment by the NHS following a period in hospital recovering from a fractured pelvis, complicated by sudden worsening of her dementia. Since being in
Town Thorns, she has really improved from what was a difficult period in her life. Her overall health and eating have improved immensely and she looks a lot more like her old self. The regular and differing, activities stimulate her and she has really settled in well, taking part in those that interest her. All the staff have been really nice and easy to communicate with. The buildings and facilities are modern, spotlessly clean and odour-free (something that, sadly, cannot be said of some other homes that we reviewed before her permanent placement was confirmed). In a nutshell, we are completely happy and would definitely recommend Town Thorn’s as a care home.

It is coming up to four years since my mother moved to Town Thorns Residential Care Home and we are very satisfied with the overall level of care that she continues to receive.
Following a major refurbishment, the facilities are very good with numerous events organised throughout the week to stimulate
and entertain the residents.
My mother is happy and speaks highly of all of the staff who look after her, who are ably and enthusiastically led by the management team.
I would be happy to recommend Town Thorns to anyone considering residential care for their loved ones.

from Angela G (Wife of Resident) published on 28 February 2024

My husband was a resident here for 7 months and has since passed away.
He had a terminal brain tumour meaning he could not walk, feed himself or toilet himself. He was totally reliant on staff to keep him safe and cared for. If They had a duty of care for him that was neglected.
He was wrongly placed
by management on the Dementia ward. He did not have Dementia.
On this ward, he was abused, bullied and threatened by 2 other male residents daily. They would come into his room many times a day and throughout the night to urinate on him by standing over him, he lay in bed helpless. Urinating on him, his bedding, on the soft chairs around his bed in the bathroom, hide in his bathroom, threaten to punch him in the face, put their fists in his face, steal his possessions and frighten him. I caught them on lots of occasions.
I had to call the Police to report the horrific abuse and demand he was moved to another appropriate ward which he was but I had to involve the Police in order to do so.
So bad.

Reply from Anna Burke, Marketing Manager at Town Thorns Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We’re very sorry for your loss. We jointly decided to put him in the dementia unit as this has the highest staff-resident ratio and it was thought his needs warranted this level of care, and additionally it had availability of a large room which we agreed would be a good option. Upon investigation, we found one incidence of a fellow resident, on a short respite stay and confused with dementia, who had accidentally wandered into his room and urinated. This was addressed immediately with a carer staying with your husband overnight to help him feel settled, and then he was moved to a different unit the following morning. The police did attend, but were satisfied he was being well looked-after and correct procedures had been followed. Your husband was well-liked by staff at Town Thorns who did everything they could to support him through his illness. The care home manager would be happy to meet with you to discuss further.

My brother spent the last two months of his life at Town Thorns. He was happy and safe there until his death, just before Christmas from dementia. His family and myself were extremely impressed with the facilities, cleanliness and treatment that he received. We were also treated with care and support

Since my Mum has been incarcerated in this home in a 1st floor ward with limited contact with the outside world as a ward of the NHS, the thing that drives me the most crazy is the fact the Town Thorns cannot manage the simple act of allowing me, my Mum's son to have any good communication with her,
over the year that she has been stuck in this place surrounded by people who insult her intelligence!
Town Thorns, please fix my Mum's internet issues and make your telephone system resident-friendly.
I continue to be horrified by the fact that I am no longer able to have a private conversation with my Mother any more!
Could the Manager please fix it, or I will shout louder and that won't be good for the sale of Town Thorns now, will it?!

Reply from Anna Burke, Marketing Manager at Town Thorns Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We’ve looked into your mum’s situation and whilst I can confirm that it’s not possible to install a cordless phone for all the residents to use, your mother has both a mobile phone and an ipad so there are a couple of options for contacting her. Our IT department have looked into any possible internet issues at the home, and have found this to be working well so this shouldn’t affect contact between yourself and your mother.
Please be assured that we take great care of your mother, and working with her family locally, ensure all of her needs are met and that she is happy.

I was nervous when it was decided my mum needed to move into Townthorns permanently. I didn't need to worry. She loves it. The care and facilities are excellent. For us it is the activities that provide the interaction and new friends my mum has made. The stimulation is amazing. I could not have done
that for her. The staff are all lovely, providing quality care. The thing for me is I can visit anytime. Nothing to hide.

I used to manage a residential home so when visiting my friend I looked at things from a staff and residential point of view and I can honestly say what an excellent home it is.
My friend is very happy and has not looked so well for years, she is so well looked after.
It's lovely to see staff doing
so much with residents like crafts, singing, games, planting in the new high beds in the garden or taking them around the lovely grounds sitting and chatting one to one.
When it was her birthday, they made a cake to fit her hobby of knitting - my friend's words to my husband were it was one of the best birthdays I have had.
Would definitely recommend Town Thorns.

Management rarely answers enquiries properly, if they do respond then answers are vague or incomplete. Our relative was in care for 3 weeks before we finally found out about fees etc. Relatives' access passes are still not available after 2 months. No update on physio assistance despite many requests.
No update on hearing aid referrals or help.
Some staff are engaging and friendly, not all though. Sometimes we get a very limited greeting from some staff when they let us in, making us feel unwelcome and like a hindrance.
A dirty bedpan was left in the en-suite bathroom on the latest visit.
No decaffeinated drinks were available for residents despite their medical needs.
Limited wheelchair availability.
Nice new building etc., looks nice and neat and tidy but there's very little 'life' going on. Very quiet.
We have no concerns over the safety and security here but it really feels like it is only the basic standard of care provided, 'just enough' seems to be the standard.

Reply from Anna Burke, Marketing Manager at Town Thorns Care Home

Thank you for your review and we’re sorry you feel that the experience at Town Thorns is less than it could be.

Your relative first came to Town Thorns following a hospital discharge and the first 3 weeks were spent assessing the level of care needed. Until this had been completed, we’re unable to confirm fees, hence the delay in providing this information to you.

Our care and other team members are committed to providing the best care to our residents and our Wellbeing and Activities co-ordinators provide a wide range of group and 1:1 activities so there is usually plenty for residents to do. Town Thorns don’t have in-house physiotherapists so this, along with hearing tests and wheelchairs is referred to external contractors which can, unfortunately, take a long time.

Apologies that the access passes are delayed, we will raise this with our facilities team.

We would like to investigate the other points raised so would be grateful if you could contact us.
