The care my relative received in Kings Court was excellent. She was cared for with genuine affection and staff took their time to ensure they met her needs. During her time there she was involved in lots of activities, and seeing the photographs of her smiling and involved was a real pleasure. She was
well fed, had meaningful activities and was treated with dignity.
Though she recently passed away, staff showed her kindness right to the end and were supportive to family who were attending, taking the time to pay their respects. Their many kindnesses were really appreciated.

My mother receives outstanding care from an amazing team of carers who go above and beyond to meet her individual needs. The Care Home is superbly led by the Assistant Care Manager who inspires and motivates the team and always finds solutions if any problems arise. She is cared for with great dignity,
love, respect and compassion. The carers are encouraged to spend time getting to know the residents and my mother looks upon them as family as do I. The Care Home is well maintained incredibly clean food is excellent quality. My mother enjoys the many activities that are put on every day. She loves being pampered having her hair and nails done every week. As a family we were hesitant at the prospect of our mother becoming a resident but she quickly settled and thoroughly enjoys her life. I believe her life has been extended due to the exceptional care she receives and I and my family are greatly comforted in the knowledge she is very happy and so well cared for by an amazing team.

Ventress Hall

from J S (Son of Resident) published on 24 February 2025
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 3.0 out of 5

My Mum doesn't get much interaction from carers, otherwise what is absolutely necessary. I feel that her basic needs are met but the carers could do more to make her life better. We often find carers sat in the lounge socialising between themselves or on their phones and I think that time could be better
spent with the residents.
Mum's room is often dirty and untidy.
We have raised issues with things not working in her room and they have not been resolved.

The manager and her team continue to deliver excellent care to Mum. She has flourished since coming into King's Court and every member of the team is enthusiastic and positive whilst with the residents. I can't single any particular carer out as everyone seems to know Mum and understand her needs. She
enjoys being with her fellow residents and doing the various activities available which are many and varied. Mum always looks clean, tidy and well-dressed just as she would want. She enjoys the food and her room is well maintained although I think she only sleeps there, preferring to spend time in the lounge with her friends. Thank you, everyone, at King's Court, we very much appreciate the support, care and kindness you show mum.

Ventress Hall

Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

My Aunt moved to Ventress Hall in October 2024. 4 months in she seems very settled and happy. I selected Ventress Hall based on the friendliness of the staff and the general atmosphere which felt welcoming and slightly informal - the main reception area always seems to be quite busy and bustling and
I like that. She is happy with the food, there have been quite a few outings for her - and if the staff are encouraging she is likely to join in activities and have some fun. It has been a weight off my mind that she is now somewhere and safe and is cared for - and not living alone where she was becoming increasingly anxious about everything.

All the carers look after my mam well, and she gets along with them all. The only problem I have is that if there is anything wrong with mam (i.e. lately very sore legs, painful back and bum). I have to point it out to the seniors and ask for something to be done. I think this kind of problem should
be noticed more by the carers. In all other respects, I'm happy with her care.

Mum has been here for 9 months. She has such a good quality of life now with all the activities and trips out she has. The staff are warm and welcoming and will do anything to help. The only problem we encountered was around Mum's cleanliness, Mum has Alzheimer's and when staff asked if she needed any
help washing and dressing Mum always said she could manage even though she couldn't. But now things seem to be improving as Mum is accepting help and getting showered regularly, after asking the staff to use different wording when asking her.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Ventress Hall

Ventress Hall

from H G (Daughter of Resident) published on 6 February 2025

Generally good but there are some things that could be improved upon. For instance, drinks are provided in the dementia lounge, sometimes without drinking glasses. No towels in the bathroom, things going missing, which is common in the dementia unit, and staff don't have time to look for them. Most
things do turn up eventually. Unsupervised residents in the lounge, especially when one of the carers is on a break. The carers are great but they are often rushing around trying to do two things at once. Although staffing levels meet the government standards I feel they could always do with more.
There could be more frequent activities to stimulate the dementia residents. On an afternoon some residents in the lounge are asleep. Maybe they are just tired, but it could be because they are bored. Last week there was music from a bagpipe player, which went down well.
Overall this is a good care home with good food. With a few tweaks, it could be great.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your detailed feedback for Ventress Hall. We’re pleased to hear that, overall, you feel your experience has been positive, and that you’re satisfied with the care provided, as well as the food and staff.
We truly appreciate your insights on areas where we can improve. We understand the importance of ensuring all details, such as drink glasses and towels, are consistently available, and we’ll work to address this to provide a more seamless experience for everyone. We also recognise the concerns about lost items and the pressure on our staff. While the dementia unit presents unique challenges, we will review our approach to ensure items are better tracked and that our team has the support they need to focus on all aspects of care without feeling rushed.
Your comment about unsupervised residents during breaks is also valuable, and we will assess how we can improve supervision, ensuring that all residents are safe and engaged.
We’re glad to hear that the bagpipe performance was well-received, and we agree that more frequent activities can help keep our residents stimulated and living a fulfilling lifestyle. We’ll take this into account when planning future events to ensure that there are always opportunities for our residents to engage and enjoy their time.
Thank you again for your feedback. It is incredibly helpful as we continue to refine our services and make improvements where necessary. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything else we can do to support you and your loved one. Best wishes

Putting Mum into a care home was the hardest decision we have had to make but I am now so pleased we have. The worry and stress have gone away knowing that she is in such a caring environment with staff who genuinely care about her. Her social life is great with many opportunities to attend different

I am so happy with the care and friendship my Mam has received from the staff at King's Court. She was really struggling at home before she moved in last year and is so much happier now. She receives fantastic care and has the support she needs to join in with lots of activities to keep her body and
mind active. The home is in the former King's Head Hotel in Barnard Castle Market Place, has good facilities and it is nice that the residents can watch all the comings and goings in the town from the lounge window.

My father in law was a little reticent at the prospect of becoming a resident in a care home. However after a visit where he was able to meet staff and get a feel of the home he was much more at ease with the idea. He has now been a resident there for 6 months and still as settled there as when he became
a resident. Church View is well laid out and meticulously clean and caters for all the needs of the residents. The staff there are gems and nothing is any bother for them. Their whole work essence is for the good and well being of the residents who they arrange multiple activities for as well as tending to the individual needs of each. On my many visits now it is a joy to see their interaction with my father in law and also their willingness and encouragement of the residents to introduce new aspects for example a domino handicap which has encouraged other residents to participate. The knowledge he is supported and well looked after has been a great reassurance to us as a family.

Church View and all of its team has exceeded our expectations about what could be delivered in a care home. The home came recommended to me through a variety of routes and I know I could not feel more comfortable about the care my parents have received there. The care standards set are high; the environment
is homely and of a high quality and the facilities are modern.
More importantly than this, the way in which care standards are carried out in practice is remarkable. Individual carers are empathetic, personal and genuine in the way they care for each and every resident and this makes this a very special place. The leaders here have created an environment where each and every individual is treated with genuine care and personalised attention; every member of the whole multidisciplinary team is impressive in their own field.
I would recommend Church View unreservedly; we are lucky to have found it.

Having had to find a home at short notice for our beloved mother/mother-in -law, we have found this home to be superb. The rooms are well-furnished, warm and well equipped. The activities are well-planned, innovative and fun, and residents are supported and encouraged to join in. Each and every staff
member is so welcoming and friendly and go above and beyond to make each resident feel at home, cared for and content. They are treated as individual personalities and listened to, even when they are repeating themselves again and again! The expertise ,warmth, good humour and understanding of the staff has also helped us a family navigate through the cruel disease of dementia, and their support in difficult moments has been very much appreciated.

We had a very poor experience at Ventress Hall. We often struggled to access the building due to lack of staff on reception. My Dad was not looked after well in the specialist dementia unit, and staff were not very caring or attentive. Some of the staff were very rude to me, and lacked the patience
and professionalism to be in this line of work. We moved Dad to another home and have had an infinitely better experience.

My dad was very anti care homes, kept himself to himself so it was very difficult initially with the move to Church View but after a bad fall and my dad arriving straight from hospital the staff were so welcoming. His whole support was very individual to his own needs and how he prefers things to be.
Initially, the plan was for my dad to be there short term then to be reviewed. The day of the review we were all totally surprised my dad asked if he could stay as he liked his room so much and had settled knowing he could have his independence while having the reassurance he was fully supported when needed. He says he has no worries and he loves the staff, his room is like a hotel room, cleaned every day, the food is lovely, lots to choose from and nothing is a bother when he asks for a little help.
