Mary House

My daughter has lived here for 10 years. It is her 'forever' home.
Like all of the care sector, there have been challenges with staffing after covid, but the level of care has never dropped below a high standard. As parents of young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties, we get used
to micro-managing their lives, and it is a hard adjustment to stop this, but it is the payoff for giving them the opportunity to live the most independent life they can as an adult, just like anyone else. My daughter enjoys a great social life, is well cared for and her personality is appreciated fondly by the staff.
It is clean, the staff are great and it is her home, not an establishment. The management team are friendly, approachable and takes on board feedback. Communication is good including her social life and GP appts.
All in all, a good example of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and complex health living the most independent and rich life possible.

Mary House

My son resided at Mary House for the past 5 years. Please never let your child be cared for by Martha Trust. The management is incompetent and does not listen to anyone. They have a closed-shop culture and all of their efforts are spent covering up mistakes and the fact their residents have a very poor
quality of life. The management lies to professionals, parents and their staff about the care they are being funded to provide. (which they are not). They never followed my son’s care plan. The residents cannot speak, and their other communications are ignored. The care staff are wonderful. They are not valued by management and are blamed and told off like schoolchildren. Don’t be fooled by the amazing hydrotherapy pool, it is not used much. My son was suffering because of the management. The way his care was managed was making him unwell, physically and mentally. This is the same for the other residents. All of the parents I speak to, feel the same. Martha Trust claims to be a Christian Charity!

Reply from Julie Gayler, CEO at Mary House

At Martha we pride ourselves on being open, transparent and person-centred, with the health and wellbeing of our residents at the forefront of what we do. We work closely with families and care professionals to ensure the best outcomes for all our residents, and to support them to live life to the full, despite their complex health needs. Sadly we found ourselves, in an unprecedented situation where we have had to serve notice on a resident. The parent concerned showed a blatant disregard to our Safeguarding policies, expected code of conduct for visitors and continued to undermine our staffing team's care of other residents. We have a duty of care to protect our residents and staffing teams. We worked closely with the Care Manager in East Sussex regarding the situation and notified CQC that we have served notice and the reasons and evidence behind this difficult decision. If you are considering a placement with Martha and have concerns we would welcome the opportunity to speak to you.
