From Christmas Eve to February 24th 2025 my Father was a resident at John Wills House Nursing Home. Up until his death he received the most excellent quality of care in every way and from every staff member. Whether it be receptionist, cleaner, meals technicians, nurses, carers managers. They all took
the time to do their best to make sure my father died with dignity and free from pain. Staff were not only supportive with my Dad but also us as a family already grieving the loss of our mother.

Reply from Wendy Leaman, Care Home Manager at John Wills House

My wife has been in the dementia section of this care home for nearly one year. She has settled amazingly well due the attention and personal care shown to her by staff. For my part prior to my wife's placement, the St Monica Trust were very supportive and helpful to me personally in talking through
my anxieties and concerns. The St Monica Trust reassured me that my wife would be able to maintain a degree of independent living with security and continue to enjoy life. This has brought renewed happiness to us both.

I spent over a week in hospital in December 2024 and moved to Christchurch just before Christmas. I had had a fall which broke my left hip in such a way that an operation was not possible. As a result, I arrived at Charterhouse virtually unable to walk. I came home on Sunday 2nd February able to get
around very well on a variety of walkers, feeling very confident although I live alone and very grateful for all the care I received that enabled me to do so. My room was light. Food was adequate and I was able to leave my room early on. Above all the staff were simply wonderful, encouraging, helpful, and kind. All my physical needs were met, including sessions with the physios, which made my progress both easier and more rapid. I loved going downstairs and mingling with people of all ages from the local community. I cannot thank all the staff enough for enabling me to regain enough independence to return home.

Dad loved living here. He was made to feel so welcome and cared for. He said he felt cared for, safe and supported by all of the teams.
As a family, we were also very grateful for the professionalism, openness, support and inclusiveness that we received. Dad's care needs were considered, discussed
and implemented to ensure his welfare was paramount. We also really valued the great humour of the team caring for Dad and it was great to see him laughing. Humour was always a very important aspect of his life.
In addition, there were always lots of activities including lots of cake which was great as Dad had such a sweet tooth!

I am a resident of another home and had a hernia operation on the 2nd of October. Someone suggested I might be helped to recover by spending a week in Charterhouse, which I did.
I was helped there by having a room to myself, by visits from some caring staff, by having meals brought into me etc.
What
I found difficult was the noise, even with my door shut. Everyone had their own TV, sometimes on very loud with the door open. The TV in the middle of the room was on most of the day and late into the night and at various levels of sound and often with no one watching it. I realised later on I could go back to my room in the other home to have a siesta in the afternoon!
The communal TV was usually turned off around 11 pm, however the week I was there a member of staff turned on the TV at around 2.00 am. On another night another staff member turned it on at around 3.00 a.m. I had to get up and say that I was trying to sleep before they turned it off!

Reply from Gail Stone, Care Home Manager at Charterhouse

John Wills House

from Debbie J (Sister of Resident) published on 15 November 2024
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

My sister died very peacefully at John Wills House. She had been transferred from hospital to Beeches 1 wing of John Wills House a few months before, for end of life care. During her time at John Wills House, she received the utmost care and kindness. I have total admiration for both the nursing and
care staff - for their expertise and dedication and also for the way they maintained a cheerful homely atmosphere for the residents. They treated my sister like a special person and I could see that they gave the same attention to each resident on the wing. Certain staff stand out particularly for me but we've been asked not to give names. Overall the whole atmosphere on Beeches 1, in very difficult circumstances, was so positive and welcoming for both my sister and myself and her family. I'd like to mention the cafe staff too who were also very kind. The best comment about Beeches 1 came from my sister who, terminally ill but now comfortable in her room, said that she was happy to be there.

Mum moved into Severn South at the Charterhouse Care Home after a spell in hospital. From the moment she arrived, she was treated with dignity and respect. The staff are kind, compassionate and friendly and the standard of care provided is excellent. The home itself is in a beautiful setting with wonderful
facilities. She has a large light and airy room with lots of storage space. The place has a lovely atmosphere but what really stands out is the wonderful team of people working there. We are happy to have found such a lovely place where mum feels happy and safe.

Mum was on end-of-life care. Mum was bedbound, couldn't talk or eat due to her MND. Her diet throughout her 11-week stay was ice cream as that was all she could manage. They welcomed her and gave her a birthday card. They took her out to the grounds on one occasion (in a wheelchair) The staff washed
her daily and used the hoist to bath/shower her. The staff we met were all kind and caring. Her room was comfortable with a TV and ensuite facilities.

Searching for a care home everyone said Charterhouse was the best, we have not been disappointing. Mum has settled in well. Staff and management, first class, approachable, understanding, helpful. Food is exceptional and tee and coffee is always available. Activities are really good where mum has attended.
My only concern is sometimes activities or venues can be cancelled or moved with no notice causing disappointment. That aside I am so happy how well mum has settled in and how welcoming all the staff, from the front reception to the nurses, dinner ladies, carers have received her. So much better than I could ever have hoped for. Thank you.

John Wills House

from C T (Mother of Resident) published on 20 September 2024
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5

My son spent about five months in JWH. He had Motor Neuron Disease. When he arrived was mobile but needed support. His only complaint at that time was the delay in response to his bell. Also, MND progressed until he was totally dependent on carers. The MND IT team fitted a call button he could activate
with a small movement of his head if it was carefully positioned. The permanent staff managed his care well, but the agency staff did not seem to have the same understanding, and there were times when he was unable to call because the call button was inaccurately positioned, as he had problems until coughing and breathing also were potentially life-threatening. He died September 2nd.

Reply from Wendy Leaman, Care Home Manager at John Wills House at John Wills House

Thank you for sharing your experience during such a difficult time. We're deeply sorry for your loss. We're grateful that our permanent staff could support your son through his care, but we sincerely regret the challenges you mentioned with the call button positioning. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will work to ensure improvements in this area. Our thoughts are with you and your family, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share this with us.

Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

It's been a very tough couple of years leading up to the placement of my husband into the care of The Russets and Sherwood. It's never an easy decision placing a family member into the care of others. So I want to thank all the staff at The Russets and Sherwood, not just the managers, carers and nurses
but the whole team that includes, the admin staff, the caterers, the cleaners and gardeners for making the home such a nice place to stay and visit. The emotional and physical pain that I was feeling has been eased with the knowledge that my husband is getting a very high standard of care. Having had to cope with my husband's deteriorating condition for many years it is comforting to know that the staff at The Russets and Sherwood will do their very best to make the experience (no matter who you interact with) a very pleasant one. I commend all of you at the Russets and Sherwood - thank you.

From the point of first contact through to the admissions process and on to the on-going care and protection afforded by them to my sister since December 2023, I have found Charterhouse excellent in all aspects. High standards are set and maintained by strong, compassionate and supportive leadership
and management and well trained and experienced care teams. Staff in all areas of my sister's care understand the need to respect her environment as her 'home' (as it is for other residents), whilst ensuring that activities and social interactions, so essential for her emotional well-being, are purposeful, enjoyable and, wherever possible, take into account her personality, her past life and preferences. Alongside the provision for my sister, the Charterhouse team also seek to encourage and support relatives, helping them to cope with stressful and distressing situations.
