9.9 Group Review Score (the average from all locations with a review score)
  • Care Homes Owned by Amesbury Abbey Group
The Amesbury Abbey Group has dedicated almost half a century to the care of the elderly and has been doing so with remarkable success since the day the first resident moved into Winton House in 1972.

Amesbury Abbey was opened in 1985, followed by Sutton Manor shortly afterwards.

The group was originally founded by Mary Cornelius-Reid AM MBE who realised when she was a Senior RGN at Winchester Hospital, that there was a tremendous need for nursing homes for the elderly that could deliver personalised service and premium quality care in beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

Mary Cornelius-Reid’s legacy continues today by offering a highly professional, caring service to the elderly based on a truly personal approach.

The group has the relevant knowledge, experience and staff to deal with the majority of health conditions and other issues experienced by the elderly, including caring for those with dementia at Winton Care Home; whether that be on a long term, short term, respite or convalescence basis.

The group also provides beautiful, character independent living properties with additional support services at Sutton Manor and Amesbury Abbey where a sense of home and community is created.

My experience of Sutton Manor was of the highest quality, starting from the day he was admitted in April. Being admitted to two hospitals previously. He was a very sick man on arrival but after some excellent care and good food he flourished. From the manager downwards (that is not meant to be demeaning
to the rest of the staff). The staff were kind, efficient and from my point of view delightful to deal with. He was given a lovely room, that was completely redecorated before he moved in, on the ground floor, with a small conservatory with direct access to the lovely grounds. He had as many of his own furnishings that he wanted, including a great many pictures, these were put up most expertly by the caretaker.

My father has been a resident at Amesbury Abbey for nearly two years. I live overseas in Australia and although it is so very far away, the staff, all the staff couldn't be more amazing at keeping me abreast of my father's health and wellbeing. He is so very happy there and so amazingly cared for. I
just can't fault any part of his care. He has a wonderful rapport with everyone and just couldn't ask for more. When we stay over and visit we are so well accommodated and helped at every turn. The accommodation, food and everything is just 5-star!

My parents moved into one of the independent living thatched cottages in 2019. I live in the U.S. but visit them annually for several weeks. Suffice it to say, I already have my cottage picked out! This place is fabulous. Everyone who works there has been kind, responsive, helpful, interested and interesting
and pleasant. The 4-course lunches served in the Manor House are superb. My mother has cooked every meal for 65+ years and she's in heaven now. The grounds are gorgeous and well-maintained. Perfect for a walk or stroll. The town is tiny but has a small shop, pub and hair salon. Sutton Manor has a driver who will take residents to the grocery store, the train station (1/4 mile away) or on other short errands. I can't say enough about the employees. They've all been so kind to my parents and my parents truly enjoy talking with them and getting to know them. So many activities and celebrations on special days. I'm so happy they are there! And I get to visit!

Sutton Manor sets a gold standard for kind, attentive and respectful care.
My father has multiple medical needs and requires a lot of attention including for very undignified care procedures. He is never made to feel a nuisance, his concerns and suggestions are listened to and he regards the staff
with genuine affection. This applies to owners, nurses, junior carers, caterers, receptionists, laundry workers, caretakers and gardeners. It is a community that works. The communal spaces are elegant and comfortable and there are large gardens and parkland with sloping lawns and magnificent trees. I hope Sutton Manor is still there when I need residential care!

My Father is now in his fifth year of living under the care of Amesbury Abbey Care. He feels well and truly at home with the wonderful team of staff that look after him every single day. Nothing is ever too much trouble The care is bespoke, individual and personalised to his needs. All of the staff
treat Dad as one of their own family. The nursing care is exceptional. The meals are really well planned and like being in a five-star hotel. Housekeeping looks after Dad's belongings, his paintings, family photographs and furniture, and makes sure he is looking dapper every day in freshly laundered attire. There are always activities going on which keeps Dad engaged with the other residents and means he still has a social life and things to look forward to. With reflection over the last five years, I am so lucky that I moved Dad to Winton and then The Abbey when I did. It's exceptional in every way.

Most beautiful place to live. Everything is taken care of very promptly. Lunches in Sutton Manor are fabulous. Staff there are superb, the wardens are always available to help. Ground staff friendly and helpful. Cleaners excellent. One of the owners manage the site with generosity and warmth.
We are
so lucky to live here in a lovely spacious thatched cottage.

The standard of care is quite exceptional. My mother has had a difficult year and the staff have made quite extraordinary efforts to make her as comfortable and happy as possible. They are invariably kind, patient and concerned. The manager is a truly exceptional individual and I cannot praise her highly

My mother has been at Amesbury Abbey for seven years. During this time she has received care at the highest level that has been reassuringly professional yet understated.
This included the difficult Covid period.

My Mother has been a resident for two years following my father's death. She was very depressed when she came to the Abbey at Christmas 2022, feeling that her life was done and wishing it to be over but little by little she was helped to find her feet by the charming staff. The relaxed and homely atmosphere
combined with respectful encouragement to join in has worked its magic. She is now much happier and enters into the many activities laid on for the residents - the Christmas dinner, to which I was invited as a guest, was a joyful experience. I live abroad and can stay in the excellent guest accommodation when I visit. The communication between the care home and my brother, sister and myself has been excellent. Highly recommended.

Fantastic home for my mum, with caring staff that go above and beyond to keep her happy, well and engaged. There are many activities arranged and staff have the time to sit with her if needed or help her take part in activities. She is very happy and we have no concerns about her wellbeing. It's also
a stunning place to live with fabulous grounds to explore.

My mother was booked in for a 2 week respite stay however upon arrival it became apparent that it would need to be a permanent move and this was arranged with great efficiency.
The kindness that my mother received each and every day from the staff was truly wonderful. It was reassuring to know that
she was in a homely, caring and supportive environment receiving the best nursing care and attention that she and I could have hoped for.
I feel confident that my mother couldn't have been anywhere better and the entire team at Sutton Manor made a very difficult time bearable thanks to their support.

Sutton Manor

I went to Sutton Manor for two weeks respite care, as it is half way between my daughter and a son. The care I received exceeded all my expectations and when the time comes for me to leave my home and friends, whenever that might be, it is the only place I shall go to. The beautiful house and surrounding
parkland were welcoming, the care was gentle and attentive but never intrusive. Lunch was the main meal for residents, but on the second night a dinner was provided and each course was in memory of a country through which the Orient Express ran, the cook excelled herself.
Because I was there to be near my children, I did not join in the bridge group or other activities apart from a film show one afternoon.
My room was not large, but had everything needed in it, a spacious bathroom and beautiful view at the front of the house and overlooking the park.

An excellent home. The team caring for my uncle are most caring and attentive and are always looking for ways to enhance his life in the home. I have no experience of the food, so cannot comment, nor of the activities, though I hear good reports for both.

My Mother's move from The Mews into the Manor was arranged swiftly, where she had spent twenty years, with a warm welcome from the staff. The staff are all charming and helpful and our family is happy to know she is safe and cared for.
The standard of the meals now is excellent with such an enthusiastic
new cook. The Drawing room has also improved so hopefully will be used more for visitors. There are more activities I am led to believe. The pre Christmas review shows the interaction of those who are independent of the Manor joining in with the Manor residents. Sutton Manor celebrates certain special days throughout the year and is excellent at offering hospitality to the locals.
Thank you to the hard working team.

We, as a family of 3 siblings have been very pleased with Amesbury Abbey. Our parents are together in a nice suite and are warm and comfortable, surrounded by their own things. My parents cannot speak too highly of the kindness and care they receive from everyone at Amesbury Abbey. We three visit regularly
and would agree with this comment. My parent's situation is a difficult one, my father is 103 and really wants peace and quiet and to sleep, although he does very much enjoy stimulating company. Meanwhile, my mother at 98, would like to be incredibly active but is hampered by suffering from severe Macular Degeneration. The staff do their very best to help her and to involve her in anything that is going on in the way of activities.

The kindness, patience and cheerfulness of the staff as they go about sometimes challenging professional duties is inspiring. The care that they provide ensures that we do not worry when we are not able to be there. They have made my father feel welcome and respected and encouraged him to join in with
meeting others and going to the group things going on.

The team at Sutton Manor are outstanding in the care and attention they provide for my Dad. This starts at 'the top' with the excellent leadership by the manager and can be seen throughout the whole team, nurses, carers, catering, ground staff etc.
Nothing is ever too much trouble and if there are
ever any concerns, they are responded too and acted on quickly, supported by excellent communication.
A great job well done, and I would whole heartedly recommend the Sutton Manor team for anyone looking into residential care.

My mother moved to Amesbury Abbey following a fall and hip break and resulting in weight loss. She had tried another care home and it had been awful so we had pretty low expectations, though high hopes that Amesbury would be different. The manager shone during the whole intake process, her nursing background
providing fabulous advice for our mother whilst she was in hospital. Best of all, she put me under no pressure to decide or rush into a decision, setting her apart from other care homes.
I had then been worried that perhaps the manager was brilliant, but the service afterwards wouldn't match it, I am so relieved that everyone I have dealt with since has absolutely matched the ethos the manager showed. When I changed our plans for Christmas and asked on Christmas Eve if we could manage to get our mother to us for the holiday, everyone moved mountains to help us. There seems to be a "can-do" attitude at Amesbury.
Above all else though, Mummy is happy and that's what really matters.
