I worried about my mum going in a home but to my surprise she loves it. They do activities, have parties, exercise classes. She loves the staff who are caring and friendly. Mum is allowed to be independent as well. Fantastic place.

Reply from Heather White, Care Home Manager at Beech Dene

Appletrees Care Home

from R T (Granddaughter of Resident) published on 21 August 2024

I would avoid this home. They claim to have an activities programme but no activities are evident. The bar area is for show! Residents are left in their beds or sat in a chair. They left my grandad in bed for months claiming it was his choice or that he was too large for a wheelchair. They constantly
called him bariatric and a very large man in front of him but he weighed between 18 and 19 stone - far from 25 stone! We provided a tv and a smart speaker for music but they would rarely turn either on. His hair was greasy and not washed.
No referrals were made to physio, OT, etc. unless we actually met the doctors ourselves.
They would wedge him in tiny wheelchairs that would rise with him when hoisted. They also cut skin from his finger when cutting his nails causing bleeding and did not inform us.
They sent 1 day's worth of diabetic medication on transfer and had none on order, so would have run out.
There are a few nice carers, but they have no chance!
We referred to the Safeguarding Team, due to our many concerns.

Reply from Sue Anslow, Manager at Appletrees Care Home

Firstly I would like to say that all of our residents are given choices, including your grandad as to whether they would like to get up and come to the lounge area, we always encourage our residents to get up in their best interest, not demand, as your family did, which was going against his wishes most days, the same with his tv, he didn't want it on and stated this numerous times, also the many times you and your family came into the home and abused the staff because they didn't adhere to your demands, which was totally unacceptable, I am very surprised that after so many safeguarding concerns you left your grandad at the home, The safeguarding was closed due to unsubstantiated evidence. I would also like to add that we kindly loaned you one of our wheelchairs and a week later, you still haven't returned it, not only is it theft but also abuse to our other residents who need to use it. Referrals were made! but your grandad wasn't compliant.

I recently removed my Mom from Appletrees due to lack of 'care'. The residents are bored, there is no stimulation for them at all. As my Mom's care needs increased they were unable to meet them and rather than tell us they just muddled on, which really wasn't helpful.

Reply from Sue Anslow, Manager at Appletrees Care Home

We were very sad to see your mom go as she had been with us for many years, she had settled in really well and knew all the staff, when your mom's needs increased we didn't just muddle along we sought advice and help, and in the interim, we managed her needs really well until a 1:1 was put in place, by ensuring that there was extra staff on every day to encourage your mom to interact with others and maybe join in with some activities, but as you know your mom was very reluctant to do this and preferred her own company.

I can't thank all the staff here at Arden Grange nursing home for looking after my father-in-law after a stroke. They were beyond helpful and friendly. I definitely recommend the home, so caring and compassionate, they have been a lifesaver and my father-in-law was very emotional leaving to go back
home. Thank you all again to the manager and her team.

Beech Dene

from Denis B (Son of Resident) published on 1 March 2024

The carers are kind, caring and really hard working, they would do their utmost to ensure my mother was as comfy as possible, also bonding with her, so times when family could not be there, they would spend time laughing and joking, trying to keep everything upbeat, it is a difficult job as some days
she would be in pain, but as soon as the doctor had given permission for her to have stronger medication whenever she needed it, all she had to do was press the call button and she would be sorted. I know she really loved the care team as it was a huge part of our conversations when I went to see her. My mum did not have much mobility but she was happy enough to watch TV in her room and the view from her window was quite beautiful, often you would see squirrels playing. It gave the family peace of mind to know that Mum had fantastic 24-hour care, a huge thank you to everyone involved in her care.

Beech Dene is a clean, bright, warm, caring home with staff that go far beyond just working there, they go out of their way to make sure all residents feel loved and cared for. Not just for residents but for their families too. The food is excellent, and the medical care is excellent. We never have
to worry about Mum being on her own and lonely ever again. Would very highly recommend.

Appletrees, previously another name, which changed overnight without notice, is an appalling place that is not fit to be called a care home. Management are shocking and really do not care at all. Don't trust a word, they lie. I was told they put up with my mom’s incontinence! My mom would walk round
in circles like a dog alongside other residents equally bored, told constantly to sit down. Residents had no stimulation, sat opposite each other wailing for attention. I need to alert anyone who considers this home to run. I saw first-hand how they are all treated. Residents spend their time staring into space. The outdoor space is a small, claustrophobic space, the only accessible place is littered with used cigarettes and broken dirty chairs. They claim to be specialists in care but they have no understanding of dementia, behaviour is reprimanded as if they choose to forget! It’s not enough to feed and water our elderly, they deserve so much more. I really hope the care quality team are keeping their eyes open!

Reply from Julie Rotchell, Operational Director Registered Manager at Appletrees Care Home

We are very confused as to why we have received this review. The resident in question was with us for nearly 2 years and no formal complaints were ever received from the family.
Anyone considering nursing care for their loved one is welcome to visit us (without notice) to see for themselves the high level of care our residents receive. Residents are free to walk around the home and are never left unsupervised. The new manager runs the home extremely well and residents are treated with dignity and respect. Social care visit us regularly, and our CQC report is available in the entrance to the home and on the website. We have a large safe garden where residents can spend time in the summer. We have a lovely activity co-ordinator and residents have lots of activities to take part in if they wish to participate. All other reviews we have received are very positive.

Beech Dene

from Janet C (Daughter of Resident) published on 20 December 2023

My Mum lived in Cumbria and has Alzheimer's Disease. After a second fall and admission to her local hospital, we agreed as a family that the risk was too great for her to return home. She was very resistant to going into residential care and has been for a number of years. However, she agreed to go
into residential care for a period of assessment. Her social worker suggested it would be preferable to be admitted close to me rather than the possibility of assessment in one home and then admission nearer me later. From my first visit to Beech Dene, I was impressed by the staff who clearly understood the challenges presented by someone like Mum. Since admission the staff have been caring and tolerant of Mum's occasionally difficult behaviour, Mum has settled very well, much to the family's surprise and pleasure. She is enjoying her meals and is joining in with some of the social activities. I have been able to have lunch with her and will do it again. I cannot commend this place highly enough.

Staff are very friendly, helpful and kind to the patients. There is a real sense of 'family'. My sister has received very much encouragement to gain her mobility back, having lost confidence through neglect while in another care facility.
This positive treatment, consideration of personal needs and
friendship gives a lot of comfort to patients and their families.

I regularly visit an elderly friend who has dementia and has lived at the home for a few months now. She always looks happy and has a good relationship with all staff. She looks forward to having her hair and nails done. The staff have become like friends to her and always welcome me when I visit. We
can stay in the lounge or move to an adjoining room if we want to play a board game etc.
I'm also part of a team that provides a monthly Christian service and the encouragement and care shown to all residents who attend is heartwarming.

My mother went to live at Arden Grange Nursing Home in August 2023 due to dementia and complex health issues. The staff are absolutely fantastic and their attention to detail is impeccable and the meals are fantastic. All the residents have a good choice of what they want to eat, and specialised dietary
needs are met each day. The manager, nursing staff and administrators keep me in the picture at all times and discuss problems as they arise. Many thanks Team Arden.
