My mother has been in The Oaks for two and a half years and it used to be a fantastic home. This year 2024, the staff have left in droves and staffing numbers have been cut so much that weekend cover is not acceptable. There is often agency staff on a weekend that do not know the needs or even the names
of the residents. Staff on a weekend are run ragged. Both of the ladies who did activities have left, residents are now spending day after day just sat in front of the TV with no interaction at all. My mother has declined as she has nothing to stimulate her. If I ask what the activity is that day, I am told that there isn't any, just the TV. The carers are fantastic. They work extremely hard and really do care about the residents but the management need to have a close look at how they are treating their excellent staff before any more leave and the residents suffer further.

Reply from Diane Atkinson, General and Registered Manager at The Oaks

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear these concerns and are currently looking into these. All our staff are allocated activities and we have a full time Activity Co-ordinator currently on-boarding with us. We are extremely proud of all our staff who work extremely hard to ensure all our residents have the best quality care and support. Our staff are acknowledged individually and or as a Team through our Values and Thank You Schemes.

My dad has been in The Oaks for two years having been a bungalow resident from the beginning. He has a comfortable room, with recently refurbished ensuite facilities. He has his own furniture and furnishings with makes it feel like home. He receives excellent, respectful and considerate care from the
hardworking, dedicated care staff whose workload only seems to increase. The facilities are good with activities for all the residents who wish to join in. Residents are able to access a small shop, hairdressers, health activity centre, library, workshop and coffee shop to meet up with the wider Hartrigg Oak community.

Thank you for such a positive review of your Dad's home and recognition of the care staff. We aim to ensure our residents feel safe and well cared for in a clean and homely environment and your kind review is encouraging - thank you.

Excellent care is offered to my mum. The staff is always friendly and approachable treating Mum with dignity and respect. A lot of thought has been put into the layout of the building offering many areas to sit, share activities, walk around the garden and maintain as much independence as possible.

My mother has been a resident in The Oaks for 18 months. It is evident that the current management team are determined to make changes to improve the quality of the lives of residents and where and when possible consider individual needs. THe permanent care staff do treat Mum with dignity and this caring
sensitive approach comes across and makes her feel cared for. They have a very demanding skilled job working with residents and relative and we very much appreciate all they do, often in difficult situations. I hope Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust do everything they can to retain sich quality of staff so they too are cared in the way they care for Mum.

My mum has been at The Oaks for a month now and we could not be happier. She has settled in quickly and all the staff are incredibly kind and patient with her. She enjoys the meals, and there is a fantastic program of activities every day, which she enjoys joining in with. Her room is lovely, a good
size, and always immaculately clean. The grounds are also beautiful and we often enjoy a walk round the gardens or tea in the coffee shop. We feel extremely grateful that Mum is now living in such a lovely place and it has brought us great peace of mind to know she is being so well cared for and looked after. An absolute top-class example of a brilliant care home. Thank you.

I have nothing but praise for every aspect of The Oaks. My mother has been here for 8 months now and she continues to tell me how lucky she feels to be there. The staff are incredibly caring and patient with her, which is especially important for us as she has very high anxiety and a failing memory.
The staff are extremely attentive to her needs and do everything they can to make her feel comfortable and safe, but without patronising or infantilising her. Her room and ensuite are very comfortable and always immaculate. She has her own balcony and looks out over beautifully maintained gardens. There is a wide variety of activities on offer which she is always invited but never forced to join in with.

My mother is staying in the Oaks for a period of respite care after a short stay in the hospital - her second visit in the past year. Since the moment she arrived, she has been made to feel safe, loved, listened to and cared for - and assured that she can stay for as long as it takes. Knowing that she
can recover at her own pace and will be fully supported back into her own bungalow when the time comes gives her great peace of mind. Me too. I have spent a lot of time in the Oaks during my mother’s stay and have been struck and humbled pretty much daily by the dedication of the staff, from management to nurses to carers. What has also helped me, in particular, is being able to have a close dialogue with staff and management over my mother’s situation.

Thank you for your very helpful and positive summary of your and your mother's experience of the overall care delivery provided by the team at the Oaks. We as a team strive to assist residents to set and achieve goals one step at a time whilst maximising independence. It is a very positive review for the team who all work together to provide consistent and holistic care and support - thank you.

Three of my relatives have lived in the Oaks over the years. My mother is currently living there. She and I are very happy with her care. The management is excellent, and the carers are outstanding professional compassionate people. The integration of the Oaks within the wider retirement community of
Hartrigg Oaks is a big plus, with shared facilities like a gym and restaurants, and many activities and services to take part in. My mother maintains great social contact within the community. Definitely recommended.

Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The Oaks

The team work hard to provide all aspects of care delivery in a person-centred way - your positive review will let them know just how appreciated they are - many thanks for such a positive review of the Oaks.

When looking for a care home for my mother I visited six care homes in York but only New Lodge gave me a great feeling of relief as I walked in as it felt more like a home than an institution. The feeling was due to many factors, including the friendly welcoming interested staff, the light airy open
design of the building and the lovely gardens. Mum had always said she wouldn't go into a care home but after protests on the first day, the next morning she was happily interacting with the staff and residents and enjoyed her meals and a walk in the garden. She has now settled well and continues to blossom as a result of the care New Lodge and its staff provide. She is and looks much healthier, talks and laughs more, walks and sleeps better and enjoys being with her new friends and taking part in activities with them. Moving to New Lodge was definitely the right choice.

Mum has been a resident at Rowntree Lodge since December 2021. Initially, she struggled to settle and adjust to the different way of living. The staff were (and remain) so very kind, caring and supportive and worked hard to ease the transition.
Mum has a lovely, generously sized light, well-equipped
room and soon it became home. The home is extremely well maintained and is kept spotlessly clean. The standard of care is very high and I feel confident that Mum is safe and well cared for.
There are a good range of activities on offer and the Activities Co-ordinator works tirelessly to produce a programme which offers something for everyone. Staff are always available for a chat and keep me informed of any changes. Mum's visitors often comment on the friendliness of the care team who offer a consistent warm welcome.
Rowntree Lodge has a lovely, large, accessible garden which we take advantage of in the warmer months. There is a short covered walkway to the Folk Hall if a change of scene, tea with cake, or access to a post office is needed.

Used security doorbell to gain entrance which is great for security of residents. The door is always opened promptly by friendly staff usually from the office. Offered tea to have in Mum's room which is more homely. Found Mum sitting in a chair watching TV which she chose over the general TV room as
not too well with neck pain. I provided incontinence pads as the order was not due for another month or so. Staff busy with duties and the doctor is onsite for checks as required. Left when it was lunchtime. Thank you all.
