Our mother went to Sycamore Care Centre in September 2024 after a long stay in the hospital.
She had extremely complex medical needs but, management and staff worked tirelessly caring for her and to request additional help and support be put in place for both our mother and the family.
Unfortunately,
she deteriorated further over a very short period and passed away in January 2025.
The care centre itself is modern and scrupulously clean and the rooms for residents are spacious and very well equipped.
Activities and entertainment are offered regularly and although encouraged to do so, our mother wouldn't always engage with staff or other residents.
Dietary requirements were also difficult but, we discussed this with the staff and her needs were met.
We would definitely recommend Sycamore Care Centre, Boldon, to anybody looking for placement of their loved one and would like to thank you all once again, for the care and compassion shown when our beloved mother passed.

Reply from Amy West, Home manager at Sycamore Care Centre

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your heartfelt experience with us. We are truly sorry for your loss and understand how difficult it must have been to watch your mother go through such a challenging time. Please know that our team at Sycamore Care Centre Boldon genuinely cared for your mother and worked hard to meet her complex needs, and we are so grateful for the trust you placed in us. It warms our hearts to hear that you appreciated the care, compassion, and support we provided, not just for your mother, but for your family as well. We know how important it is to create a comfortable, welcoming environment, and we're glad to hear that the centre, staff, and amenities helped support your family during such a difficult period. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you ever need anything. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this time, and we will always remember your mother with great care. Warm regards,

Thornbury provides a clean, well-run care home for people diagnosed with dementia. Staff are largely very caring and work hard to make sure residents are happy, well cared for, safe and active. There is a very wide-ranging and interesting activity timetable and families are also invited and welcomed.
My mother is happy with the food and level of care.

Reply from Samantha Thorpe, Home manager at Thornbury Care Centre

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a lovely review. It sounds like Thornbury is doing an excellent job of providing a supportive and engaging environment for our residents with dementia. The commitment from our staff to ensure happiness and safety is so important, and it's great to hear that your mother is satisfied with both the food and the care she's receiving. The involvement of families and the variety of activities available must really enhance the overall experience for everyone involved. Thank you for sharing your positive insights!

My father was admitted a few months ago. The staff realised quickly that he would be better suited in a different unit. They moved him as soon as a space became available. This suited him and although it has taken time to settle he is comfortable and the staff are fantastic with him even on his most
grumpy days. The activities provided daily are great and the activities coordinator makes a point of seeking him out to make sure he joins in. The rooms are fully equipped and personal items are encouraged. Can't fault them. They do their best for the residents.

Reply from Jayne Clennell, Home manager at Sycamore Care Centre

Thank you for taking the time to leave a lovely review. It sounds like your father is in a supportive environment that truly cares about his well-being. It's wonderful to hear that the staff are attentive and able to recognise what he needs. Finding the right fit can make such a difference, and it's great that he's settling in and engaging with the activities. The focus on personalising his space with familiar items must also help him feel more at home. Thank you for sharing such a positive experience's encouraging to hear about places that prioritise the comfort and happiness of their residents. I will share this with the care staff.

A warm, welcoming, and vibrant home with a genuine heart where loved ones are cared for and nurtured!
Nobody relishes the thought of a loved one requiring residential care. Faced with this issue we looked at almost 20 provisions before choosing Sycamore Care Centre Boldon. This proved an excellent
choice, one that I can fully recommend. Mum resided at Sycamore for 22 months during which Sycamore enriched her life due to positive care and regular, meaningful activities.
The staff at Sycamore proved second to none, demonstrating care, smiles, compassion, and genuine empathy for residents. This was combined with skill and resilience in day-to-day care. Mum developed positive relationships with fellow residents and staff alike as we as family members were also able to do. When issues arose, we could discuss them openly with staff and approachable management, enabling positive outcomes. When Mum unexpectedly passed away recently the kindness and support were simply overwhelming.

Reply from Andrea Taylor, Home Manager at Sycamore Care Centre - Boldon

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt reflection on your experience at Sycamore Care Centre. It's evident that your mum received not only excellent care but also a genuine sense of community and warmth during her time there. The dedication and compassion of the staff truly make a difference, and it's wonderful to hear how they supported both your mum and your family through challenging times. Your recommendation speaks volumes about the quality of care provided at Sycamore. Wishing you and your family continued strength as you cherish the memories of your mum.

Mum needed 24-hour care due to the onset of dementia. We chose Sycamore as when we went to look around for a suitable care home this one was so warm and friendly with promises of activities for the residents, outings etc. The reality was slightly different, the staff for the most part are lovely and
caring and do their best to cope with and look after several residents all with different levels of care. I haven't seen many activities and all I tend to see is residents sitting around on dining chairs all day. The food that I have seen seems to be an unappetising ' beans with everything' menu. The night shift seemed to scare my mother a bit and concern was raised by my sister-in-law. Mum still has not settled properly but I'm hoping she will given time. Overall it's not a bad place, the staff are brilliant for the most part. I'd say mum is well looked after but not cared for.

Reply from Helen Featherstone, Operations Manager at Sycamore Care Centre

Thank you for the review. Understandably as your mum had only been with us for a few weeks when this was written we know this can be an emotive time. The warmth and friendliness you first noted have not changed. Our staff always try their best to provide good quality care. Meals are made on-site using produce which is locally sought and freshly bought. The menu is well-balanced, with several options available. There are also snacks available 24 hours a day. Activities occur on different units throughout our large site. You may not have had the opportunity to observe, but there is a planner in every room. Communal living can be difficult for people to adapt to especially if they are not used to being observed over a 24-hour period. As the therapeutic relationship builds between your mum, yourselves and the staff, you will recognise Mum being genuinely cared for rather than simply "looked after". We would love you to chat with one of our managers with any worries or suggestions.

I cannot recommend this home highly enough. My mother had extremely complex medical needs. The staff were exceptional in providing nursing care and compassion. The decor in the home is beautiful. The food was excellent (and she was very fussy). Nothing was a problem or too much trouble for the staff.
When my mother passed away, the kindness and support shown to us was exemplary. Thank you to you all.

My mam stayed in Thornbury just a short time but during that time I cannot thank the staff enough for the care and attention my mam was given, they are an absolutely professional team who make the time to ensure the residents are cared for in the way we all would want to be cared for, I don't have a
single bad thing to say, only good. The final thing they did after my mam sadly passed away was beautiful, laying a single red rose on her bed, from all the family a massive thank you for caring for our mam.

My partner's stay at Sycamore Care Centre was first class. All staff are fantastic, professional and very hard working, demonstrating lots of empathy and an abundance of social skills dealing with inpatients with very varying complex needs. They made my experience as a daily visitor much nicer knowing
everyone was so helpful, supportive, maintaining their focus on their job at hand whilst building a great rapport with me. The home itself is a lovely modern environment with plenty of lounges and large corridors. Daily entertainment was great too.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of the home. I am saddened that you and your sister both feel the need to separately provide a negative review, despite your Mum putting on weight since admission and having a bespoke menu created specifically for her, which your family had input into. The food which is locally sought, freshly bought and cooked on site receives positive feedback from other people who use our service. We agree that our residents deserve good food which is why the menu is well balanced, and in addition to this there are snacks available 24 hours a day for all our residents which include fresh fruits. Very rarely any decent fruit or vegetables, older people need nutritional food and nice quality food with plenty of choice. My mam will hardly ever eat
the food, it causes her distress it is so bad. Older people should be given the best food.

This home really needs improvement. The amenities and decor need an overhaul and the lift and heating are not adequate. The food is mass-produced and isn't appetising.
We can't fault the staff, they do their very best and they were appalled as the friends and family were/are at the treatment of a recent
resident by management.
Going into care you would expect that needs are complex and at times challenging. The resident had issues regarding mental health and lost his wife whilst he was there for a total of four weeks. In that time the home did nothing to support him but thought it fit to hand him his notice directly after telling him his wife had died.
His family moved him and he is so happy in his new home. No outbursts, no issues. That says a lot.

Reply from Gail Merryweather, Home manager at Sycamore Care Centre

Hello, many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry that you feel the room that you personally viewed and then chose, to be in need of updating. The building your father was in is an original Victorian building, and we have tried to keep the beautiful features and character that it brings. This was fully refurbished a couple of years ago. Other residents and families have stated that it is a lovely room, which is fully equipped and has views of our landscaped gardens from the large bay window. Our food is cooked fresh onsite every day, and although we have 113 beds we always try to accommodate everyone’s individual tastes. We welcome the 5 Star review you have provided for care, we are indeed very fortunate to have excellent staff. We fully sympathise that you were upset that we asked you to find another home for your Father, but our lovely staff need to be able to work in an environment free from abuse. Other families comment and value our effective services, so we apologise if this was not your experience and we are thrilled that your father is now settled in his new home.

Staff could not have been more friendlier or helpful, nothing was a bother or too much trouble. They promptly helped or fulfilled
any requests, they were always available to help and answer our queries or questions.
Unfortunately, Dad was only here for 12 days but died peacefully in their good hands. We highly recommended Sycamore Care Centre, as within a very short time the staff earned our trust and respect, therefore we are so grateful to them for their love and care they gave Dad in his last days and the family at the time of our sad loss.

I have only just recently moved both my parents to Sycamore Care Home in Nookside, Grindon. My parents have very different needs, but the staff have gone the extra mile to keep my parents together, which is of great comfort to them and the family. I cannot express the relief, knowing that they are both
being looked after in such a caring way, especially as my mum needs 24-hour nursing care. Everyone at the home is so friendly, happy and hard working. My father was adamant that he didn’t want to go into care as he was very independent until a short while ago, and everyone who knows him can’t believe how quickly he settled and how happy he is and the praise he has for everyone at the home. He’s even joined in on activities full of praise for the staff. I can’t thank the staff enough for their support and for looking after my parents with genuine affection; it is such a comfort. The staff are all stars and worth their weight in gold.

Sycamore Care Centre

from Tracy R (Daughter of Resident) published on 11 April 2023
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

My mother was a resident in The Lodge at Sycamore Care Centre from October to January, and then again in March.
She had excellent care, and we highly valued the compassion and attention of the staff. This was especially important to us in her second stay, in the time before and immediately after her
death.
Her time in Sycamore is when we most felt that her care was person-centred, and she was treated as a human being with a rich life rather than a transient patient. She loved to banter with the staff, and it was clear to us the genuine affection that they gave back to her. This made a big difference to her last few months of her life and gave us, as her family, peace of mind that she was not just safe but valued and looked after as a person.
This care and compassion across her stay were shown by all the team at Sycamore, from the most senior members of staff down to some very young staff, and their kindness to the family when she died was so appreciated.

Reply from Gail Merryweather, Home Manager at Sycamore Care Centre

Hi Tracy, my deepest condolences to you and your family.
I appreciate you taking the time to complete this review given the current circumstances.
Our philosophy of care is to ensure that our care is carried out with dignity and compassion and each resident is treated as an individual in a person-centred way.
Mam was a wonderful person who we had the privilege to know. We all are grateful to know that mams emotional needs were met, and the care and compassion were nothing other than consistent.
I will certainly feedback to the staff, who were involved in Mam’s care right up until her passing.
If there is anything at all we can do, please do not hesitate to contact me.
