Review of

El-Shammah

from Mervyn M (Son of Resident) published on 5 October 2021
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 3.0 out of 5

Whilst the care provided by the staff was in the majority very good we found that the actual wellbeing of the residents was not a priority in the home. Management's focus is on ensuring that the systems and processes are all in place that ensure excellent home inspections are achieved. There is a total
lack of any kind of stimulation provided for the residents with many confined to their rooms for long periods. It was a great relief for all the family when we managed to secure a place in another home for my father.

Reply from Adrian McCready, Manager at El-Shammah

We are delighted to hear that you felt the care provided by our staff was very good. It is also reassuring that you appreciate us taking our legal requirements seriously, and our endeavours to fully comply with all legal obligations as set down by Care Homes Standards and Northern Ireland Acts. Failure to comply in this manner could result in enforcement action and could threaten the continued care within our home. Ensuring that these systems and processes are in place has also helped us prevent a Covid-19 outbreak in the home.
Each resident is given the choice of whether they wish to remain in their own private bedroom or join the other residents in one of the many lounges available. This choice is made by the residents themselves.
Although we encourage residents to take part in activities, (which are available daily), no pressure is put upon them if they prefer not to. I appreciate that someone who has visited the home on only a few occasions during their relative’s stay may have little or no knowledge of our activities programme. Please feel free to contact me to arrange a visit, to see the activities programme and witness the efforts staff have made to continue these activities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
When a resident is assessed as requiring a level of care other than residential, an alternative care home that caters for the required level of care must be found. We were delighted when you found a care home suitable for your father at this time.
It is reassuring that the additional care, understanding, and attention, shown to your father in El Shammah Residential Home, was recognised by a family member, (who visited the home regularly), and who thanked staff for the great care and kindness shown to him during his stay in El Shammah.
We hope that you, your family, and your father, are very happy in his new home.
