Roman Ridge - Sanctuary Supported Living

A sunflower growing competition is in place. I have a blind mother who only stays on the ground floor. Originally the flowers were going outside on that floor but after planting we were told it had to go in the garden. There was no compromise on another spot on that floor and so she was unable to continue.
Every project they do needs eyes. This was the first one she could do alone and was excluded by disability. All disability should be catered for. Touch is the way my mum works. Feeling how the plant was growing. The questions asked were can't I put it somewhere she can see it? The garden is only a lift down? Blind and disabled means she can't use the buttons and risks falling on concrete. Disgusting disrespect for a resident.

Thanks for taking the time to share your concerns with us. We strive to create an inclusive environment for all our residents at Roman Ridge. We apologise that in this instance, the arrangements may not have met your expectations. In response to your concerns, we understand that the garden may not be easily accessible for your mother due to her visual impairment and we're more than willing to help accompany her to the garden whenever she'd like to check on her sunflower. We're exploring alternative accessible locations for the sunflower pot, and if you'd like to assess them, please contact the Retirement Communities Manager directly. We take your feedback seriously and are committed to resolving this issue to your satisfaction. We respect all our residents and we appreciate your feedback as it helps us understand different perspectives and improve our services. Roman Ridge - Sanctuary Supported Living

from P C (Son-in-law of Resident) published on 28 September 2023

To begin with, we thought this place seemed wonderful. Our view changed fairly quickly. When my mother-in-law was diagnosed with dementia there was no positive response from the management. The carers made some effort but overall fell short in my opinion. My mother-in-law was found outside by another
resident. She was confused and wet as it had been raining. She was left by carers in her wet clothes, for around an hour. We were told that they had been annoyed as my mother-in-law was 'not supposed to go outside'. Some care staff were really lovely. As we were waiting for a more suitable place for my mother-in-law, we would take care of her finances. We were not made aware that she owed less than £40 for the restaurant until a staff member told us that the manager had said she would not be allowed to eat there unless the arrears were cleared that day. All of the problems were raised with Sanctuary and the carers. We were relieved to get her out.

Reply from Emily W, Marketing Team at Roman Ridge - Sanctuary Supported Living

We are sorry to read this review. The care at Roman Ridge is not provided by Sanctuary, but by an external agency. However, we take safeguarding very seriously and it's important that all care provided in our retirement community is to the level we'd expect. Regarding your mother-in-law being left in wet clothes, we’re sorry to hear about this and our local team are looking into it with the care provider, as this was not raised with Sanctuary staff. Any other issues raised were dealt with by our management team at the time, and we were not aware of any additional or outstanding issues at the time of move-out. We hope that your mother-in-law is well and settled in her new home.
