The outstanding feature I see at Fernlea is that all of the staff who I have come into contact with, care. The word care in this situation covers all aspects of my mother's care. From meals, to entertainment. From personal care to visits out. Not forgetting all the emotional/religious support given
when her loved ones die. This care does not stop with my mother, the staff at Fernlea care for the whole family.
Yes, there are times when my mother doesn't have her call bell answered within a few minutes, but that is usually at the times of day when everyone needs to go to the bathroom. The social activities range is very varied, and should suit most tastes. When moving into a care environment my mother had 2 wishes, to have an ensuite and to have a bacon sandwich for breakfast that someone else cooked. She has her wishes and I can see that although it is not her own home, she is very settled at Fernlea and is being exceptionally well looked after.

My Dad has recently moved to Fernlea from living independently at home. Sadly, his health declined and after a very hard decision, he moved to Fernlea. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very caring team and as a family, we felt so very reassured by this. My Dad has settled so well and just feels at
home. He's absolutely delighted with the care and wellbeing he is receiving by all the staff. I know he's now in a safe and caring residential home which gives me such peace of mind.

What more can I say other than I'm so glad I waited for a placement for my mum here. The quality of the food and facilities is by far the best we have seen in the North Manchester and Failsworth areas. The neighbourhood is excellent, no gangs of youths hanging around. Don't be put off by it being in
Newton Heath, it is an oasis that should really be under Clayton Bridge. The staff will do anything for you at the drop of a hat from the management to the maintenance team. The best team of people working in the best environment always makes a difference. Go visit it, it is more like a hotel than a care home. You do pay more but you get what you pay for, thats for sure.

A very pleasant and well-kept care home. Lovely grounds and facilities. Staff are excellent with high levels of care and attention. Décor is modern, bright and clean. Only reservation is regarding a lack of regular activities. Doves Nest needs to improve in the area of activities/entertainment. Otherwise
all good.

When visiting care home in the evenings, doesn't appear to be enough staff on about 7 PM as when outside call button was used, there was a 20-minute delay in any staff at the main door, although busy, which is understandable.
Residents needing help (buzzing) and shouting, no staff around. Then as a
visitor, found a member of staff on a mobile phone sitting in corridor, while residents needing assistance, are they interested in their job!
Leaves a lot to be desired!

Reply from Louise Claffey, Marketing Manager at Fernlea

We pride ourselves on the resident experience and providing a high quality service and take comments such as this seriously as it does not reflect the usual positive feedback we receive.
I would like to assure you that our staff are fully dedicated to their roles and this is supported by a score of 100% satisfaction in our most recent resident satisfaction survey relating to the responsiveness, empathy, and care provided by our team.
I would also like to assure you that our staff are not permitted to carry mobile devices on their person during their shift. They are however allocated an electronic care planning device which they must utilise throughout their shift.
We value all feedback as this helps us improve our service. While we recognise we are not perfect we always try to do our best and invariably we are able to resolve matters quickly where concerns are expressed to us directly. We therefore invite you to discuss any concerns you have with our manager directly.

Our son has been at the home since March 2022. And has settled quite well, struggled at first but we got him an electric chair which was a godsend! My son gets on with everyone here, carers, nurses, cleaners and kitchen staff. We have a good rapport with everyone as well.

Fernlea

from Kirk R (Brother of Resident) published on 5 December 2022

Absolutely disgusted with this place. Every time I visit my relative here the alarm bells from patients are just ringing and ringing. I visited my sister the other day who needed the toilet. I literally sat there for a whole hour and no one came to tend to her toileting needs, it is not isolated either
it is every time I visit. All you can hear is alarms ringing for hours.
It seems very understaffed and in my opinion, is a disgrace. It should not be functioning if it can not provide the level of care our loved ones require. I am currently in the process of making a complaint with the local council and this place should be closed and shut down until it has the staff to function correctly and provide a suitable level of care, not leaving my sibling sat for an hour in their own faeces.
On speaking to my son about it he knows a girl who works there and after discussing it with her she said that it is understaffed and when they do get the extra staff they quickly leave due to the high workload with short staff.

Reply from Louise Claffey, Marketing Manager at Fernlea

We pride ourselves on the resident experience and providing a high quality service and take comments such as this seriously as it does not reflect the usual positive feedback we receive.
We are disappointed that you felt the need to air your complaints on a public platform rather than discuss your concerns with our manager as per our complaints procedure, and in your failure to respond to any of our numerous attempts to communicate with you regarding your claims.
After thorough investigation, including conversations with your sister and her family, we have concluded that your review contains claims which are wholly and factually inaccurate.
For the avoidance of doubt, our investigation found that none of your claims regarding your sister's care could be substantiated. Additionally, we have a robust system for determining staffing ratios and at no point has Fernlea been understaffed.

My 92-year old mother has been a resident of Fernlea care home for 6 years now and we continue to be absolutely delighted with every single aspect of the service. The care team and management are fantastic and always find time to respond to my calls/questions and give us updates on my mother - even
when they are busy and under pressure (as has been inevitable during the last 2 years of the pandemic).

In my opinion, they seem to have coped extremely well with the extreme difficulties of the pandemic and have been very rigorous in terms of their safety/health procedures. My mother herself is always complimentary about the care staff and she enjoys the food and the activities. Overall I have rated it 5 stars for every single category, which is well deserved. Thank you, Fernlea.

My mother-in-law has been a resident at Fernlea for almost 3 years. In that time she’s received first-class care with her changing needs well catered for. During Covid, staff went the extra mile to ensure the residents were able to keep in touch with family through a variety of mediums.

It can be

stressful all around when a family member needs to go into a care home. We feel that both management and staff have looked after us as a family and are mindful of our stresses and strains too. The team at Fernlea are professional, understanding and very caring. Thank you, everyone.

Through the difficult times of COVID, staff have gone above and beyond in keeping me informed. All staff are very friendly and welcoming at all times the care of my son is excellent, giving me great comfort when I'm not there. I look forward to hopefully in the near future all restrictions are lifted
and relatives and residents can mix again, enjoy time in the lovely home environment, the bistro and lovely gardens.

After having such a terrible 1st experience with our dad within the 1st week at another home, we were more than worried to put our trust in anyone. But Yorklea took our fears away within days. The care they provided for our dad was simply the best; they gave us hope, and we felt at ease to leave him
on his own. We visited daily, and Dad was always well dressed and well cared for. The chef is one everyone needs; he cares for his residents like he would his own, choosing meals to suit everyone's needs. The staff were fantastic, each and everyone one of them. Credit where credits due! The management was fantastic. Dad loved them all; we could tell. You restored our faith, and you deserve to be recognised for all you did. Thank you for giving Dad the care, dignity, trust and compassion he truly needed. Dad only spent 5-months with you, and his care was flawless.
Thank you to the manager and each and every single one of you. He loved you all.

I've been visiting a friend in Yorklea twice a week for five years and have nothing but praise for the quality of care she receives. The staff are friendly, caring and really get to know the residents, helped by the fact that the staff turnover is very low, this, in turn, reflects the commitment to
and investment in staff training. A wonderful place.

When you walk into the home it does not smell awful like some I've been to. Staff are friendly and ready to help. The person I visit is treated with respect and dignity. Also, the other person who was also there for a very short time as they were ill and at the latter stage of their illness. If they
needed the bathroom, although they were busy, they took the time to take that person even though it was a false alarm. They brought the person back with no fuss or bother.

My dad suffered a CVA and became a resident at Fernlea. I cannot thank the staff enough for their hard work and dedication. This makes my dad feel like he is at home. They have become his family. So many of our care homes and staff get bad press, I had my own previous experience caring for my father and it did have some disturbing traits. I did not choose Fernlea it was thrust upon me due to unexpected events in my life.
As I walked in, I was surprised, no smell of urine! Silly but true. So
Fernlea, the staff in the main are aged between 20-40 and their attitude towards the residents is both caring and professional, the attitude is also mirrored by all who work at the home ie:- front of house, maintenance and activities. The bistro provides an excellent catering experience, a range of culinary delights, international and traditional. There are many more things I could say but I leave it with my two sons who say "you look well, you look happy and we know you are safe".
