Dad was a resident of Alex Wood House during December 2024 and January 2025. We chose it because a) it was nearby and b) we had heard good things about it from previous residents. During Dad's time in Alex Wood he was very well looked after and we were very pleased by the level of care and the professionalism
and attitude of all the staff. It is a relatively small care home and this gives it a nice, homely feel. The facilities are first rate and nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff, who all went out of their way to be helpful and kind. All in all, we were all very impressed. Recommended.

Reply from Julie Fuller, Home Manager at Alex Wood House

My mum has been a resident at Avocet Care Home (Harlech House) in Ipswich for over a year, and throughout that time the staff are always been compassionate and caring towards my mum. Whenever I have asked questions the staff are always helpful. I am really impressed by the positive attitude shown by
all of the caring team.

My mum is happy and settled here, which is the most important thing to my sisters and I. While not the most modern care home, there is a constant programme of improvements taking place. The carers are fantastic, as is the activities coordinator. The food is excellent, good quality and plentiful.

I was discharged from hospital in King's Lynn just before Christmas and needed 2 weeks 'convalescence care' before returning home. My stay covered Christmas and New Year. I was immediately made to feel welcome at Amberley Hall. All the staff were warm, kind, friendly and efficient and always there when
needed. My room was spacious and comfortable, overlooking a well-kept patio garden. My vegetarian diet was an initial challenge for the kitchen. But, after negotiating with the head chef, we worked out a menu which suited me. Other small wrinkles were efficiently smoothed out by the management. I really enjoyed my stay and will return there, if necessary.

After having a hip replacement I was discharged home then unfortunately had a fall, after leaving A & E I was very fortunate to be transferred to Goodwins Hall Care Home for rehab. The home made me most welcome and I was impressed with the quality of care that I received. All the staff, from all departments
were kind, understanding and always willing to help no matter how small my needs were. The building itself was bright and clean (like a 5-star hotel) I consider myself very fortunate to have been a guest.

On Wednesday 15th of January, I was visiting my mother and like several other residents, Mum had a nasty cough and felt very unwell. A very nice lady from housekeeping came into Mum's room and we had a lovely chat about how this lady puts out fat balls and bird seed and what she does in the garden area.
My mum loves her garden at home so this really cheered Mum up after I left at 16.20 pm before tea arrived and I asked this lady to check on Mum for me, not only did she assist Mum with her meal, she was caring and patient and made Mum feel special and this morning the first thing Mum told me was how kind this lady had been. I believe anyone so caring should be made aware of how much this meant! Thank you.

My Mum was provided with a placement at Amberley Hall having had a really bad experience of care home neglect at another placement. This poor care resulted in Mum being hospitalised and as a result, caused us to have massive anxieties about entrusting anyone else to look after Mum to the standard deserved.
From the general manager to the reception staff, the laundry staff, the attentive carers and the nursing staff, they were absolutely phenomenal in not only welcoming Mum, but in caring for her with the compassion, dignity, and humility that any family strives for on behalf of their loved one. They treated Mum like one of their own and were so empathetic in reassuring us as a family that Mum was in good hands at all times. We visited Mum regularly and on each occasion, we were reassured to see that she was offered regular snacks between meals and was always well-presented, clean and well looked after. Even down to the 'small things' like listening to our tips on how to interact with Mum.

Whenever we visit the staff are very helpful and friendly. Any questions we have, they will always try to answer them. If a repair needs to be done in their living space, they will endeavour to get it sorted. My in-laws are always well-presented. Awaiting a referral to be actioned, would make a big
difference to my father-in-law's mobility. The food in the restaurant always looks well-presented. There is a good atmosphere whenever we go there.

Amberley Hall Care Home

from Mary M (Daughter of Resident) published on 13 January 2025

Amberley Hall accepted my father, who has severe dementia and very specialist needs, from hospital after a fall.
We were worried as we had read that the home was under special measures and my Dad is hard to look after and can be aggressive during personal care. We were assured that the home could meet
his needs and when we arrived it had a friendly feel. It became obvious quite quickly that they were not able to deal with him. I arrived at 10am one morning to find him lying on a mattress, no sheets or blankets and just a nappy and dirty shirt on. I found help and 4 people appeared to get him dressed and make his bed. After this, and on 3 consecutive days my Dad was put in an ambulance on his own to go to A&E. Instead of speaking to us as family and explaining that they couldn't cope with him or contacting the hospital, they put a vulnerable person who doesn't know where he is in an ambulance on his own to go to A&E. This was a horrendous experience and very upsetting for everyone.

My Dad has been living here for nearly 16 months and I couldn't think of a nicer place for him to be. As soon as you walk in you are met with a cosy and homely atmosphere. All staff from Care Manager downwards are so friendly and approachable and it is obvious it is not just a job to them. My Dad has
built some amazing friendships with the staff and is always singing their praises He has really come out of his shell and will joke and laugh with staff and it has been lovely to see him so happy and settled. He was quite unwell when he first went in but has thrived due to the excellent care he has received. I never wanted to put him in a care home but I am so grateful to have found this amazing place. Activities are wide and varied and I have been lucky enough to go on a few trips with my Dad and other residents and to witness the care and kindness given by staff to ensure everyone has a good time. Can't thank the staff enough for everything.
