My dad had 2 weeks of respite care, he was slightly apprehensive before going in, but from the minute he walked in was made to feel very welcome!
The premises were very clean, comfortable and bright. Nothing was a trouble for the staff.
When Dad returned home we asked if he would be happy to go back
again, it was better than he expected, his answer was yes!

Reply from Kelly Doyle, Marketing and Employee Engagement Manager at St George's Residential Home

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely feedback. We know it can feel a little uncertain coming in for respite care, especially for the first time, so it's really heartening to hear that your dad felt welcomed from the moment he arrived. That's exactly the kind of experience we hope to give every person who comes through our doors. It's great to know he settled in well, found the home comfortable, and was looked after by our team, nothing means more to us. And to hear that he'd be happy to come back again is the biggest compliment we could ask for!

My mother came into St George's Residential Home for 2 weeks respite care but both my mother, myself and brothers were that impressed she decided she'd like to make the move permanent.
Thank you for all the help and care given to her. She loves her hairdressing days.

Every member of staff are caring, compassionate and empathetic. They all made me feel welcome and communicate with me all the time. They have been an absolute godsend and the care they have shown both of us is excellent. I will always be eternally grateful to every single one of them including cleaners
and volunteers also. They all have a natural gift with all the residents especially the confused with dementia. Even though it's a challenging job, thus always have a smile on their face. I feel at ease knowing everyone at St George's Care Home. All staff.
Thank you for everything you have done for me any mu mum. Will always be eternally grateful and really appreciate it. Every member of staff has been caring, compassionate and engaging with all of us. None of you lose your patience. Such a challenging job and you are all cheerful even if you are having a tough day. I have seen how you all engage with residents and make them feel at home. Most of residents are very confused and the skills you all use are a gift, you either have it or you don't and all staff I have seen have. Everyone of you has been so patient, gentle and empathetic and encouraged my mum. Always feel welcome when I visit and see for my self that she is well cared for which puts me at ease. Also, thank you for doing things like bringing animals in, doing arts and crafts, people who play music and people who bring school children in. Thank you to the volunteers who spend time with my mum and other volunteers who play games and interact with Mum. I also want to thank you to the cleaners for keeping the home clean and for serving the lunches.
You all work well as a team and should know you are all valued. Thank you to all of you for communicating with each other and other professionals and especially my mum and me. Thank you to the manager for tunning such a fantastic home for residents you should be proud of your team. Thank you for everything. I wish you all the best and wishing everyone of you good health now and in the coming year.
Please take care everyone and thanks so much for letting me have a break and the support I was shown when I was so unwell.

Our team works hard to ensure every resident feels valued, safe, and well cared for, and we appreciate your recognition of their efforts. We're proud of the commitment our staff shows in creating a caring environment, especially with residents with dementia. Thank you again for sharing your experience. We wish you and your family all the best and are always here for you. Take care, and thank you for letting us be part of your mum's journey.

Everyone at St George's Residential Home has been very kind to my Mum and has gone out of their way to care for her. She likes to take part in the activities that are organised (and enjoys herself at the D-Day celebrations). I am kept fully informed about how my Mum is doing.

Reply from Kelly Doyle, Marketing and Employee Engagement Manager at St George's Residential Home

Thank you for your kind review of our care home, we are so pleased to hear that your mum has settled into the home and our team have fully supported her. My family member came to St George's following a hospital stay & us being advised that they could no longer live independently. I fully admit that I had reservations as they have always been adamant that they would not go into a care home saying they were prisons and they would not be made to go!
From
the first day at St George's, he was "home" and to my amazement, he has settled wonderfully. It really is home from home.
I live quite a distance away & can no longer visit as often as I did but I phone all the time and the staff are so helpful and willing.
It was the best decision (that the hospital) made for us.
He is looked after and cared for and they keep in very regular contact with me so I always know how he is & what's happening.
How could I ever begin to thank everyone at St George's for making the time he has left stress-free and comfortable? They're all truly wonderful!

Reply from Kelly Doyle, Marketing and Employee Engagement Manager at St George's Residential Home

We're truly touched by your kind words and so happy to hear that your family member has settled in so well at St George's. We understand how difficult it can be when someone has strong feelings about not going into a care home, so it's wonderful to know that he now feels at home here and that the transition has been a positive one for both of you. It means a lot to us that you feel reassured by our team's care and communication, especially as you're living a distance away. We know how important it is for families to stay connected and we're always here to make sure you're kept informed and can reach out whenever you need. Thank you for trusting us to care for him and for your incredibly kind words about our team. Knowing that we've been able to make this time stress-free and comfortable for him is the greatest reward for us.

On first arrival, we were greeted by one of the members of staff. After initial introductions, my sister & I were invited into the Manager's office while Mum was invited to go down and have a cup of tea. While in the office we were given a full explanation of how the home was run. This included all
the safety aspects that the home ran. We were encouraged to ask questions or raise any matters that we were unsure of.
Following this meeting, my sister & I were given a full tour of the home and its grounds. This was very good (as my sister & I left we both commented 1) how clean the home was 2) the friendliness of the staff 3) we had made the right choice.
We finalised any remaining paperwork and prepared to leave after a final chat with Mum. She seemed quite content, the staff reassured us they would keep a close eye on her, with it being her first night.
As we left the home I said it's very good, I will be booking myself in next - we had a laugh.

Reply from Kelly Doyle, Marketing and Employee Engagement Manager at St George's Residential Home

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that you, your sister, and your mum felt so comfortable during your visit. We're really happy that you found the home clean and friendly and that we could answer all of your questions. We know how important that peace of mind is, especially when it comes to making decisions for a loved one. It's lovely to hear that your mum seemed content and that you had made the right decision. We're always here to make sure both residents and their families feel supported, so knowing we made a positive impression really means a lot to us. And your comment about booking yourself in next made us laugh! You'd be more than welcome anytime.

Mum has been a resident of St George's for three and a half years and in that time her general health and well-being have improved dramatically. The level of care and attention the residents receive is excellent and the activities that are organised are engaging and fun. Recently Mum went on a trip
to Ravenglass with a trip on Lal Ratty which she enjoyed thoroughly and we were visiting recently when a folk group were playing which again really cheered Mum up. We are regularly contacted to ensure that we have no concerns about Mum's care and are always contacted immediately should there be an issue with Mum's health in any way. Mum always tells us how good the food is and how well cared for she is when we are visiting. Mum feels safe both physically and psychologically which is a great comfort to us.

Reply from Kelly Doyle, Marketing and Employee Engagement at St George's Residential Home

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of St George's. We are delighted to hear that your mum has experienced such significant improvements in her health and well-being since joining us three and a half years ago. Our dedicated team strives to provide the highest level of care and attention to all our residents, and it's heart-warming to know that your mum has enjoyed the activities we organise, like the trip to Ravenglass and the visit from the folk group. Ensuring our residents have engaging and fun experiences is a priority for us. We are also pleased that our communication with you has been effective, keeping you informed and reassured about your mum's care and health. Knowing she feels safe and well-cared for, and hearing her praise for our food, is truly rewarding for us. Thank you once again for your kind words and for trusting us with your mum's care.

My mam has been here a year now. I feel Mam has excellent care. Her dementia has caused Mam's behaviour to be challenging at times. I feel she is treated with love and care, and the staff are working so hard to meet Mam's needs. When I leave, I have no worries because I know Mam has the best care and
the staff contact us if there is ever a problem. Well done, everyone!

I have only ever seen the staff behaving in a kind and respectful manner. My mother tells me they are all kind to her.
At a meeting for the residents and relatives, we were encouraged to ask questions and received satisfactory answers. Suggestions are also welcome. Where activities are concerned, a
good effort is made to try to remember the abilities of each resident and include each one, sometimes on an individual basis such as a simple trip to the sea and an ice cream. All the staff are approachable and I am kept informed of my mum's health.
The star rating for food and safety is because I am only there during visiting hours so I cannot comment on outside of those hours.

Thank you for taking the time to review our home, its wonderful to read how kind, respectful and approachable your Mum and yourself find our staff and I will ensure that this information is passed on. We welcome and value all suggestions made with regards to our service and feel that holding regular meetings not only enables effective communication but allows for an open forum where suggestions can be made and discussed. My mum has been staying at Kirklands for six months now. I have found the staff extremely caring and helpful. My mum still experiences moments of being unsettled and the staff take time to sit with her and calm her. They always have time to say hello and treat Mum with the utmost respect. They ensure
Mum feels comfortable and keeps her dignity. As a family, Kirklands have been extremely welcoming to us and have given plenty of time and assistance to help us adapt to Mum's new surroundings. I cannot say enough good things about the level of care Mum receives at Kirklands.

My mum moved into St George’s in December 2023 aged 91. Such a big change can be very unsettling for many people but the staff did everything they could to help Mum settle into her new surroundings. She was allocated a nice room with dual-aspect windows and her own toilet. There are two nice lounges
for her to watch TV or she can do so in her own room. Staff are attentive to her needs and keep in regular contact with me if required and when they undertake reviews of her care plan. There are regular activities for residents to take part in. Mum feels very safe and contented in St George’s which of course is a great comfort to us her family.

I cannot fault the care my mother has been given. The home is always clean tidy and welcoming.
However, I do complain about information and how it is shared. Many items are emailed which is good but activities and menus could also be sent to families rather than being placed on the notice board. I
know most things are planned well in advance. Why can’t a monthly menu and activity plan be sent out too? It doesn’t make sense to me why this isn’t happening. I have complained about this before and haven’t yet had any response in 5 years!

This is an honest review aimed as guidance with the very difficult decision of choosing a care home and includes the things that I wish I had been forewarned about.

What they do well: washing, dressing, medication, meals, daily activities, cleaning, reporting of incidents.

What they don't do well:

security of personal items and clothing, laundry turnaround, close supervision of residents, management communication and feedback.

If your relative requires day and night close supervision, assistance with orientation and mobility or has any dementia-associated behavioural problems then this is not the home for you. They simply do not have a sufficient number of experienced staff to cope and, in my opinion, your loved one would be better placed in a home with nurse support.
