I just wanted to leave an up-to-date review, as Mum and Dad have been in Shipley Manor for nearly 2 years now.
Mum and Dad can be challenging due to aging and Dementia but we have found all the staff really very good in the care and attention they give to our parents. It can vary a bit due to staffing
changes but if ever there has been an issue it has been dealt with quickly and to good effect. Certain staff members are absolutely amazing with my parents and often share the pain of watching mum and dad decline alongside us. Some of the staff feel now like family members.
Just lately we have had stresses due to the pursuit of local authority funding and I can't praise the manager, enough. She has been utterly kind, compassionate and caring. Honestly don't know how I would be managing without her.
So, finally, thank you all so very much. I don't have the words to express my gratitude for all you do.

Reply from Paul Millar, Client Relations at Shipley Manor Care Home

My mum has had some respite care at Shipley Manor. She was apprehensive about going to the home. However, she soon got to know the other residents and felt completely at ease, in no time at all. She joined in the daily activities. Really enjoyed the food. She stated that all the staff were extremely
attentive and caring.
When we visited, the staff were always courteous and extremely professional, from the manager to the care staff.
We have booked my mum in for some more respite when we go away in April.
I would not hesitate to recommend this care home to other families. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders knowing my mum was safe and secure, whilst we took our grandchildren on holiday.
Highly recommended.

Thank you for choosing Shipley Manor for your Mum's respite care. Your kind words are greatly appreciated and I will of course pass them on to the Shipley Manor team. We look forward to seeing you again in April.

Venue modern and purpose built. Rooms bright and airy. Some staff seemed caring and helpful, others disinterested and unhappy. Bathroom smelt of urine at every visit. Night catheter left on bathroom floor and disposable receptacle reused for emptying catheter bag. Conversations with family not accurately
recorded and family not listened to or involved in supporting mums care. Mums room was at end of a corridor and she was on her own much of the time. Family felt discouraged to visit despite travelling long distances. Family asked to leave at mealtimes as "visitors were distracting and could cause choking issue" mum often left in her room taking meals on her own! Power of attorney for mum disregarded by care home as family not informed of important issue. Mum and family shocked when learning of the issue and the concern reported however family concerns were negated by the manager and no learning for them was identified.

Reply from Jackie Brook, Care Relationships at Shipley Manor Care Home

Thank you for your feedback. We acknowledge the concerns raised regarding your mum's stay and conducted a thorough investigation, which included staff discussions, review of care records, and communication with relevant professionals. Our findings have been shared with the CQC and closed. A choice of room was given and your family chose the room as it had a lovely view of the canal. It was confirmed that your mum ate her meals in the dining room and was encouraged to socialise, though she made individual choices regarding participation. Protected mealtimes, communicated to your family, aim to maintain residents' safety and nutrition. The GP discussed with your mum at length her choices of treatment to enable her to make her decision which he felt did not require power of attorney input. We are committed to reflecting on feedback to continuously improve our care practices. Do not hesitate to reach out directly so we can further discuss your concerns and work towards a resolution.

A massive thank you to all the team at Hutton Manor for the care and welfare they provided to Mum. We were lucky enough to find a place here in April after Mum spent time in hospital and was unable to return to her own flat due to her ongoing battle with dementia. The entire team and the support they
provided until her passing this week has been first class. Thank you all.

My sister has been cared for for the past year. The staff are kind, caring and try their best to respond to individual needs.
At times of ill health, the extra care given has been faultless.
The food is excellent and nutritious and the afternoon tea looks delicious.
There is an excellent activities
programme daily provided by dedicated staff. They run a varied programme with outside involvement.
Of course over such a long period of time matters arise which have always been discussed and resolved if possible.

My sister-in-law was admitted to Shipley Manor 1 year ago, after settling in (approx 1 month) she has had exemplary care the surroundings are pleasant and kept immaculate and the staff are conscientious, compassionate and caring. During this time my sister-in-law suffered a short illness, and the care
given contributed greatly to her recovery. I have no hesitation in recommending this care home to anyone who needs care for an elderly relative.

Two stars for the lovely setting and some of the staff, 0 stars for the management and duty of care.
Don't be deceived by the hotel appearance reception area. My mum's room was dusty, and unclean and a few times when we visited. There were soiled pads in the bathroom and in her wardrobe, faeces in
her bed, and many times no toilet paper available. Trying to find anyone to ask for this basic necessity was nearly impossible. On the ground floor, there was hardly any staff available. Even though she's diabetic her feet were never checked, they then told us they weren't allowed to touch them! The final straw was when we checked them and they were disgusting with a fungal infection which needed medical attention. Some of the staff were lovely, just not enough of them and a very defensive manager with a bad attitude.

Reply from Adam Ward, Operations Manager at Shipley Manor Care Home

Thank you for sharing your concerns about your experience at Shipley Manor Care Home. I'm sorry to hear about the issues faced, and understand how upsetting this must have been. We take all feedback seriously and addressed the matters you raised immediately regarding cleanliness and supplies. Regarding your concern about your mother's diabetic foot care, I'd like to explain that while our care staff monitor the general well-being of residents, specialised foot care for diabetic patients usually requires attention from a Qualified Podiatrist and/or GP. We encourage families to arrange this care directly with the relevant medical professionals, and we are happy to help with any arrangements. We've already been in touch to discuss these concerns, but I want to reaffirm our commitment to providing the best care possible. If you'd like to discuss this further or need any more support, please feel free to contact us.

On walking into Shipley Manor for a visit. We were amazed at how well it was organised. A hotel for the elderly who for whatever reason could not look after themselves at home. The staff were very welcoming and advised us of the correct path to go done with regards to our 93-year-old friend going to
live there. Once settled in we visited him on a regular basis for six months until he sadly passed away. Every member of staff we came into contact with greeted us with a smile and any concerns or questions we asked about our dear friend were dealt with immediately. He was looked after with the high quality of care we wanted for him.

The care home was highly recommended by my niece. We visited the home prior to arranging respite care for Mum. From the rooms with ensuite, the facilities and the friendly and professional staff we were sure that all Mum's needs would be met. We were not wrong. She thoroughly enjoyed her stay. Made

Don't be fooled by the lovely canalside building.
With good reviews on their site, we'd no reason to query the care, too new to have a CQC rating. The staff were friendly but something seemed wrong. His toileting needs were not being met. Every day he waited hours to be taken, which led to complications
and distress. He had an inadequate chair which caused a huge sore on his spine. There were delays getting urgent med and the attitude was that he/we were asking too much. One day his trousers were saturated in urine and his ulcerated legs, weeping and sore.
We confronted the manager who was defensive/angry. She blamed his cancer. We were told the problem was my Dad for being demanding. How can you not be demanding when you have lost the use of your legs?
We moved him to a wonderful nursing home and the care was next level. Everything was just done, with no fanfare. Only with hindsight, after seeing what proper care, did we have clarity on the scale of neglect we experienced at Shipley Manor.

Shipley Manor Care Home

from T R (Daughter-in-law of Resident) published on 11 July 2024
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5

My father-in-law went into Shipley Manor for end-of-life care as he had cancer.
We had no previous experience of care homes and had never been in a situation like this before. The building is nice, the rooms spacious and most of the staff friendly but that's where the positives end. His medical needs
were not met, his room smelled strongly of urine, and he was left on the toilet for long periods of time. When we queried it we were told he was not of sound mind and it was his own fault. He had cancer but it had not affected his mind which was completely sound. This response was uncalled for, hostile and defensive. It masked a shocking catalogue of neglect.
We managed to move him to a different home when we realised the extent of his neglect. He passed away peacefully there surrounded by fully trained and caring nursing staff. I know care homes do have their problems but this was different. I would never recommend putting a loved one under the care of this establishment.

Reply from Jackie Brook, Care Relationships at Shipley Manor Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are deeply sorry to hear about the issues you faced and are truly saddened by your loss. We understand that you were navigating an incredibly difficult situation, and we apologise if our previous response came across as hostile or defensive. That was never our intention. We take your feedback very seriously and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns further. This will help us understand exactly what went wrong and how we can improve our services. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us directly. Had to move my mother-in-law to Shipley Manor after her old care home was closed. Could not believe the difference between the old and new places. Shipley Manor is absolutely superb. I cannot fault it, the place is spotless, the staff must have been hand-picked because they all know how to do the job
to make residents happy and comfortable. Rooms brilliant, food is like a 5 star restaurant. Management sort any problem out straight away, not that I've personally had any. They should all get a medal for the work they do. Thank you, Shipley Manor.

Looks are very deceiving. My mum is a dementia patient and for the last few months the care is atrocious, the day staff are really nice, my mum has had several falls and her feet are mouldy and she has bad fungus because they are not showering her, she has dementia so she needs the special gentle care
but is not getting it, she's had a fall today but they called my sister in Greece and not a doctor, she has issues with low sodium, the staff need training, for £1400 a week the care is awful.

Reply from Sharon Burton, Home Manager at Shipley Manor Care Home

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are concerned to hear your comments and regret that you felt the need to express your concerns publicly without addressing them with our management which we always encourage. We prioritise health and safety of our residents. Medical attention is always sought at the time of any event/fall. Family are called unless we are advised otherwise. You will be aware that professionals including physios and falls team are always involved. Staff are trained to provide comprehensive care, including showering and monitoring of health conditions eg fungal infections. GPs visit at least weekly, prescribe relevant treatment and monitor conditions such as sodium levels. We continuously train staff to meet the needs of residents, including those with dementia. We understand paying £1220 a week sets a high expectation for quality of care, and we are dedicated to meeting and exceeding those expectations. We request that you reach out to us directly to discuss further.
