My sister has been a resident at Hawthornes Birkenshaw for 8 weeks now. During that time I have found her well cared for. Staff are very friendly, obliging and professional. She is enjoying having company and feels happy and content. Her room is lovely and she enjoys the meals so much she has put some
of her weight back on. She keeps telling me how much she likes the Hawthornes. I am so happy for her and glad she feels so settled.

The Sycamores

from N B (Daughter of Resident) published on 6 March 2025
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5

The manager and the care team at The Sycamores have helped to nurse my mum back to health after a bad fall in hospital. She stayed in the home for 9 weeks until her shoulder fully healed and she has improved a lot since she went in for respite care. By adjusting her medications and getting her appropriate
medical help they helped her to get enough rest and nutrition to help her heal from her accident. The carers are lovely. I feel that maybe her clothes could have been washed more often and she could have been encouraged to do a bit more physical activity.

Reply from Paul Millar, Marketing Manager at The Sycamores

The Hawthornes

from Anne O (Niece of Resident) published on 5 March 2025
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5

My aunt has been a resident since July 2023 and has been well cared for throughout this time. She enjoys the food which she says is excellent - her only complaint is that there is too much and the cups of tea aren't very nice! On the occasions when medical assistance has been required, each incident
has been dealt with professionally and with compassion and I have been kept informed at all times. The atmosphere is very welcoming and there is always someone available to answer any questions I may have regarding her ongoing care. Overall, I have great confidence in the manager and her team at The Hawthornes.

Reply from Paul Millar, Marketing Manager at The Hawthornes

My son 2 years ago, knocked on Priestley Care Home's door, for that is what it is to me, a home, ever since. I am cared for, warm and happy. The cooks are excellent, I have to have my food pureed to be able to swallow. The doctors are excellent, the senior staff are extremely caring, always at their
best for everybody in our home. My nose is always running, I have Huntington's disease, I use a lot of boxes of tissues.

The Hawthornes

from Susan A (Daughter of Resident) published on 3 March 2025
Overall Experience  Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5

Having been at The Hawthorns for 12 months we are confident our mum is well looked after and cared for. She is encouraged to socialise by going to the dining room for meals and taking part in the many fun activities on offer.
We will always be grateful to the manager for making all the necessary arrangements
for Mum to move in at short notice and is always available to reassure us when we have any concerns. The Hawthorns has a friendly, family atmosphere where everyone works very hard and nothing is too much trouble.

I find staff are overworked as there are only two members of staff with 20 rooms to look after, I see this every day but still the care goes without saying.

Many thanks for taking the time to review our home. All feedback is welcomed and allows us to continually develop our service. In respect of staffing levels all Highgate care settings, (Priestly included) are always staffed to a safe level based upon several varying factors. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you should you like to speak to either of the deputy managers. Your kind comments on the care provided are much appreciated and I will of course pass them on to the Preistley team.

My Mum has been a permanent resident since July 2024. She loves all the staff and they love her, she enjoys her food but said it could be better. Her room is ok but small, she has her own reclining chair from her home, a walker, commode, Zimmer and a food trolly. So very little room, we have put her
belongings into her room, but feel it could be more homely. Also feels the activities could be more interesting.

Office manager, getting involved in family disputes. Food is terrible. My dad's room has an old bed and mattress. The room looks like something out of the 1950's. Staff are okay but not the manager. My dad has ants in his room.

Reply from Paul Millar, Marketing Manager at The Hawthornes

Many thanks for taking the time to review our home, all feedback is welcomed and allows us to continually develop our service. Having reviewed your comments I understand that there was a full investigation conducted during the summer of 2024 in which the important points you raise here were addressed and explained in the complaint summary sent to you. I am sorry that you feel that our service has failed you and I would be happy in future to discuss any issues you may have. Your Dad is a much valued resident of the Hawthornes and continues to enjoy living at our home, including meal times and sleeping well and comfortably on the mattress which was provided by his family. Knowing the home and manager I would suggest the two recent Five Star reviews received from other members of the family are more indicative of the service and care provided to your dad.

Since my mother-in-law has been a resident at Hawthorne's care home she is a much happier person more confident and very settled. The carers have really got to know her and show her so much love and support. It really does feel like home from home. She always looks very clean and tidy and little things
like getting her nails painted go a long way. She always loved drawing and painting when she lived at home and the staff have brought this out in her again something she hadn't been able to do for a long time - by spending time with her she has enjoyed this hobby again.

My mum moved into Priestley Care Home in November 2024 after being in another home that wasn't meeting her needs. Since being in Priestley Care Home my mum has actually started to smile again and has found some vocabulary again which she had lost. All staff at Priestley Care Home show care, compassion
