Henbrook House Care Home

from Nadine H (Regular Volunteer) published on 10 April 2025

Every week, as a childminder we bring a group of children to Henbrook. The children, full of energy and curiosity, engage in various activities with the residents - from simple crafts to interactive games and storytelling sessions. The children and residents have formed a special bond.

For the

elderly residents, these weekly visits provide social interaction, with a younger generation. Many residents seen smiling, engaging in lighthearted conversations, and even helping the children with certain tasks. For those with more limited mobility, the amazing staff ensured they can still participate by incorporating seated activities or sharing story books with the children.

These visits have created a positive, family-like atmosphere at Henbrook House. The residents and children look forward to the visits, it's clear that this initiative is more than just play; it's about fostering connections that bridge generations, providing emotional benefits to both young and old.

My family had a long haul holiday and was looking for respite for caring for elderly mother. I chose Portsdown view as previously visited and mother's sister is in full term care. My initial contact with the care home was very positive, excellent communications. A week prior to her arriving we had
an assessment review which was detailed and made me fill happy leaving my mother in their care. The accommodation, staff and managers were excellent and she received outstanding care and they provided constant activities to keep her engaged and made sure she felt as she was on holiday. The food standards were excellent, beautiful maintained facilities. I will certainly recommend and will use again. I can't thank the team enough for all they did and in such a positive manner.

My parents came in on respite after my mothers operation. Sadly they didn't mix much but I can't fault the staff. Care was carried out in full but any extra help was hit and miss when it came to exercises and physio. With regard to management, I can only thank the staff member in the bistro and another
in the office. Without their help and understanding I don't know what would have happened. Two incredible people!!

Reply from Pippa Mafunga, General Manager at Portsdown View

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We're truly sorry to hear that your parents didnt feel able to mix much during their stay, and we understand how important that social connection can be especially during recovery. Your feedback is invaluable and will be shared with our team to help us improve in this area. We're grateful for your kind words about our staff, particularly the team members in the bistro and the office. The care for the residents is exceptional, the home itself is the best I've seen and is the reason why I recommended it to a friend who has said the exact same thing. The visitation is great as family are able to visit and join in with daily activities! The activities are incredible and really enhance
the residents wellbeing both physically and mentally. I am very happy and content knowing that my family friend is living here with extraordinary care and most importantly she feels safe!

Having been a daily visitor for eleven weeks I have seen many examples of the gentle but effective care all staff extend to residents regardless of physical or mental problems. I perceive this is the normal approach not the exception which is commendable. Faced with a serious medical emergency in the
past week with the resident I visit I cannot give enough praise to the two members of staff who handled this difficult situation with skill professionalism and empathy. When recovered the resident will return permanently as this is an exceptional care home.

We moved our Dad from another care home where he had lived for 4 years to Meadowbrook in February 2025 and the move has been seamless. The staff have been exceptional, especially two staff members who personally took responsibility for settling our Dad, who is living with advanced Lewy Body Dementia.
We had been so worried to move him so far into his diagnosis, however the team have made him feel safe and comfortable. He is sleeping better than ever and has finally started gaining the weight he has lost steadily over the last 9 months. When asked, with limited vocabulary he describes his new home as 'feeling like home, home'. I am sleeping better too and don't feel the need to keep checking in. We couldn't have wished for more.

Reply from Laura Adams, General Manager at Meadowbrook Care Home

Thank you so much for your kind feedback, I am absolutely delighted you feel this way and that you are sleeping better. I will be sure to share this with the team. Dad is such a gentleman and a real pleasure to care for.

Overall Experience  Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5

Management care and attention are excellent, friendly, good communication and caring approach for the resident.
Caring staff on what I have observed are a little bit slack and take the residents first reaction as gospel. Resident with dementia sometimes cannot communicate if they are thirsty or hungry
and could have not had drink or food all day. I know it's difficult as there are other residents but a bit more observation would greatly help.
Staff should encourage residents to get involved and participate in all of the facilities and organised events so the residents settle and enjoy the home easier.

Reply from Laura Adams, General Manager at Meadowbrook Care Home

Thank you for your review and lovely words. We appreciate that the care needs of our residents can vary depending on their specific conditions and diagnosis as well as how we are required to adapt our approach dependent on this. I would really like to further understand the observations you have had and so have reached out personally to ensure we are always providing the extraordinary care we strive for.

My mum has spent 2 weeks here in respite care. I have seen more staff than residents and they are all very welcoming, friendly and caring. It is lovely and clean. Residents are well looked after. We had an 85th party for my mum, food was lovely and they made her a birthday cake and bought her flowers
which she loved, she has dementia so couldn't remember any of it. The family appreciated all the effort from the staff. So far everything has been positive.

Portsdown View were incredible when my grandma needed respite care urgently. They went above and beyond to help her feel comfortable and made our whole family feel welcome. You are always greeted with a genuine smile. The food is excellent (especially the daily cakes) and there is a massive variety

Mum came to live with us following the death of my father and has been with us now for 3 years.
My wife requires breaks from caring for mum and we have tried other care home providers and can honestly say that the level of care, the facilities and friendly "can't do enough for you" approach to mums
stay is just fantastic.
Mum even asked if she could have her 80th birthday at Henbrook House Care Home and then a second birthday when she came home to us.
Henbrook said, of course and what, when and how many would you like
So mum had her brothers and there children (all in there 50's) on the day of her birthday and then another party on the weekend.
Mum has dementia and in her words " the whole of her birthday are such wonderful memories it's just a shame that dad wasn't with her "
Thank you all, from the care staff to the kitchen staff and everyone else involved.

Well where to start. Not sure if the care home messed up or the hospital but my grandad was dumped off at 8:30am to which no one was accepting responsibility. To my mum's shock she found a picture of my grandad on a social media site (may I add nothing had been signed to say this was allowed), which
caused a great upset to the whole family and he would be horrified if he knew. We were told we would be getting apology email - we are still waiting. Data Protection Breech:- I confronted management about the phone calls I was receiving about my grandad as I believed the first point of contact should have been my mum, to which I was told because I'm not POA I shouldn't have been contacted by law and they kept saying they didn't have my number. Very strange. The attention he got from the carers was good and they were the ones who asked how he was when he was admitted to hospital. From management we received no courtesy phone call nothing. The list could go on. Don't waste your hard earned money.

My Nan has fairly complex needs and we had had a poor experience at a previous care provider. When we visited Henbrook House Care Home I knew it was the one. It has many lovely touches that should be standard across all care providers to offer a good quality of life, but sadly that is not the case.
All the staff are lovely and spent time getting to know my Nan on her arrival - the welcoming flowers in her lovely room was such a lovely touch.
The fact that I can visit on my birthday and have a private meal with my Nan has blown me away. Again this should be standard but just isn't. I am so happy that we found Henbrook House and that they were able to accommodate my Nan. I would recommend it - and I might just move in myself.
