Chestnut House

Dad spent just five months at Chestnut House prior to his sudden and unexpected death there in August 2024. Soon after Dad's admission our contact with him was curtailed due to an outright lie being told by a staff member about us. We were not given accurate reports from the care home as to Dad's rapid
decline since his admission to their care, only after his death discovering that he had been barely eating or drinking, and it became clear Dad had been distressed for much of his time there. The home is understaffed and unclean as a contemporaneous review states. This is not a home we would have chosen for our dad, and we advise others to avoid this place. We would not place a dog in this home, never mind a loved one. We have taken up our concerns with the management of the home (and other organisations), but have not to date had an adequate response.

Reply from Moira Jones, Area Manager at Chestnut House

Your father was one of forty-one people who lived at Chestnut House during the period you refer to. All other forty families were happy with the care provided. Your visits to the home were curtailed due to a ruling by a court of law, that was outside of the home's circle of influence. This is why your visits were supervised. Your visits were supervised by a Social Worker who also visited the home on an ad-hoc basis. No concerns were raised further to any of their visits. Your father did not 'barely eat or drink' whilst at Chestnut House. In fact, he gained 6K in weight. This fact does not support your spurious allegation. Chestnut House is not understaffed or unclean. It is reviewed regularly by CIW and FCC. The home also completes its own suite of audits to ensure that standards are met. Records are maintained. It is correct that you have written to the home however, on each occasion, you have received a response, therefore, yet again, your allegation is incorrect.

My mum was a resident at Bistre Nursing Home until she passed away recently. The care she received was wonderful and as a family this gave us such peace of mind. All staff are welcoming, friendly and compassionate, nothing was ever too much trouble.

Chestnut House

I was so disappointed with the care at Chestnut House, I felt I had no choice but to take my mum from there. Despite being promised that there would be daily activities for the residents, there were none during the fortnight Mum was there. Yes there were boxes of jigsaws and Dominoes on shelves but
I did not see staff get them out and engage with the residents (I went at various times of the day from early morning to later in the evening). In fact, I played Dominoes with one resident and he became much more animated. Ensuring residents have stimulation is as important as making sure they are clean and fed.
Cleanliness is also hit and miss. On a couple of occasions, there was a strong smell of urine in the home, including my mum's own room. I also had to ask for her hair to be washed as it was very greasy. I found communication poor e.g I was not informed of the outcome from the District Nurse's visit.
I have raised these issues with management and hopefully things will improve.

My uncle moved to Chestnut House a couple of months ago. Thankfully he has settled in well. The bedrooms are quite spacious with plenty of storage space. Windows have safety locks. Lovely staff who all engage with my uncle with respect and friendliness. Activities such as jigsaws, dominoes, and crafting
are available. Also, they had pie and a pint last month. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, including arranging for my uncle to have an eye test there.

I feel very welcome when I visit Chestnut House, the home is warm and friendly, and we are all on first-name terms. The staff are always pleasant and accommodating. My husband is well fed, clean, and cared for, sometimes a little bored and sometimes not very happy.
If I could highlight anything it
will be my husband's bedroom it's definitely dated and could do with a bit of upgrading.

Bistre Nursing Home is such a welcoming place. It’s like a home from home. The carers, nurses and everyone who works there are so friendly and helpful. If there’s a problem they will go out of their way to try and solve it. My mum is very happy here.

All the care staff are marvellous with my mum - the nursing staff and caregiving are fantastic, everyone knows Mum well, even the cleaners and kitchen staff interact with her which is great to see. I am kept updated on Mum's health and well-being if I am unable to visit.

Perfect experience - couldn’t be happier with how much support my aunt has received. We were very nervous about her going into the home, as we have always tried to care for her the best we can at home, but the staff have made not only her feel comfortable and supported - but us too. We appreciate everything
the home has done for us, more than recommend to anyone looking for the best place for their loved one.

As a granddaughter, seeing my nana in the care home so happy and comfortable means the world. Everything is so personable and she is looked after with so much care. The staff there ensure she is happy every day, from her meals through to activities. I couldn’t ask for better care! Thank you Bistre Nursing

If you are looking for the best care for your loved one, then you will find it here.
The staff work tirelessly to ensure the residents are well cared for. Mum spent the last eighteen months of her life here, the staff were wonderful with her. We had no worries about her welfare and comfort.

My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago. Mum was sent to Chestnut House as an emergency case because her mental health was deteriorating. They made what was a difficult process much easier. They are caring, well organised and incredibly nice. Mum is Ok. She is being well looked after, fed,
warm and cared for and I appreciate it so much.

It would be nice to see some more activities in place for the residents. There doesn't appear to be anything to stimulate. The staff work very hard but rarely have time to do other things but one-to-one with personal care. The home is always clean and tidy and so are the residents.
