Chestnut Lodge Care Home

from C G (Granddaughter of Resident) published on 17 January 2025

Granddad has been in this nursing home for almost 3 months receiving end of life care. The nursing home staff without exception are all very caring and professional and do a wonderful job of looking after granddad. We have visited almost daily and called daily often more than once a day and were at
no point ever made to feel we were inconveniencing them. They were always on hand to update us on granddad's progress and care. Granddad has dementia so caring for him is at times quite challenging. The staff have treated granddad with dignity and respect and in a time when it was not possible for Granddad to be looked after at home gave him the next best alternative. We thank every staff member for their care and for getting to know our precious granddad and dad as a person and looking after him so well. No words will ever be able to convey our gratitude to each and every one of the staff. Thank you all so very much.

My father was admitted to the nursing home after being in hospital with dementia and a cancer growth on his temple. He had lost a substantial amount of weight as he wouldn't/couldnt eat there.
He went to the home in September. He quickly settled and ate plenty of food (even things he previously hadn't
liked). He put on 11lb very quickly. The staff were brilliant with him (he was very stubborn at times) but were able to get him to comply through their patience and persistence, never pushing him to do things he didn't want to do. Dad passed away Boxing Day and even to his last, the staff (nurses and care workers) were good and kind to him, calling a GP whenever they felt he needed it especially as he had cancer and checking on him every 15 minutes during his last few days.
Myself, my husband and my children cannot praise the home enough. A member of my family rang every day without fail and always received a complete update. I was also called if dad had any problems at all.

The staff are very attentive and compassionate. Nothing is too much trouble for them from the care staff, admin staff and catering staff - they are a great team. They have ensured my grandad's move was as comfortable as possible. We call every evening and we are always updated on how grandad's day/healthcare
has been.

My mum moved into Chestnut Lodge on discharge from hospital. Initially, she was anxious and unsettled and having dementia didn't help as she really didn't understand where she was and why she was there. She was on the dementia ward on arrival but within a week this was discussed with myself and staff
and it was decided that the better option for my mum at the time would be the residential unit. A move so soon after arrival wasn't an easy transition but the staff were absolutely fantastic with her and with me providing support and reassurance. She is eating again, taking her medication, socialising with others, participating in the activities and is more positive in herself. The staff are super hard-working, kind, passionate and loving. My mum is gaining weight, taking care of her appearance and they support her well with this. Thank you to staff for caring for my mum and allowing me to visit her as her daughter and not her carer.

Fleetwood Heights Care Home

Dad went into this home at the end of August on palliative care fast track. We only had the choice of 2 nursing homes and we were falsely led to believe that Dad would receive the best care possible. It had only just re-opened under new management and seemed to cater for everything Dad would require
in his last few months of life. How wrong were we? Dad had no dignity, he was left in bed with no underwear on. He often slept in clothes he'd worn all day. The room that he was in quickly began to smell of urine and the stench in the bathroom was unbearable. The Nurse in charge left the premises and did not complete the necessary paperwork to certify his death so he was just left in his room for almost 10 hours. That home should never have re-opened. The staff were clueless and never around when needed. Some could barely speak English. My dad was a very proud, dignified man and I'm devastated that he spent the last 18 days of his life in a place where he just wasn't cared about.

Reply from Peter Benham, Managing Director at Fleetwood Heights Care Home

We are truly sorry that we failed in meeting your fathers's needs at Fleetwood Heights. We have taken steps to understand what went wrong and to ensure the right standards of care are in place moving forward. The staff responsible have been held accountable for the failings within the home. Kind regards

The management and medical staff were absolutely brilliant when my uncle was asked to move from his care home at exceptionally short notice. They were calm and sorted all the necessary medical assessments and paperwork with minimum fuss. They dealt with his former care home with professionalism and
courtesy. Guiding me through a difficult process as I live 200 miles away from my uncle. They arranged the transfer and settled him into a beautiful room with all the necessary equipment and fully trained staff to support his care. I could not have asked for more. Thank you all so very much.

After a previous bad experience it was such a relief to find my wife a placement at Chestnut Lodge where she is now settling in nicely. The home itself is modern bright and airy with a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Since my wife went to Chestnut Lodge she has put back on the weight that she lost previously
and looks like her old self again. The staff are well trained and caring towards the residents and the home itself is well managed and well-run. Chestnut Lodge and all the staff there get top marks from me. Thank you.

My Mum moved to Chestnut Lodge a few months ago. I could not praise the place, staff, and management enough, they are all fantastic. My Mum has settled so quickly here, which has been a huge relief. She could not be in better hands, all the staff is so lovely and that shows in how my Mum is. The manager
was amazing, sorting everything for us and running a fantastic care home, this place is fantastic on all accounts.

The floor needs to be re-decorated as the ground floor, but I don't know if this is scheduled to happen or not. A new vinyl floor covering has just recently been put down to replace the carpets to make it easier to clean, which is a big improvement. Unfortunately, they haven't replaced the carpets in
the bedrooms with vinyl. It would have been better if they had as the bedrooms do smell sometimes. Also, clothes appear to go missing even though they have been provided with sewn-in labels. To make it easier to carry out activities the side lounges must be provided with larger tables like the ones in the dining room. The current tables are too small.

My mother has been with this care home since 2017 when my father died who was her primary carer. She was struggling with dementia for several years and the staff at Chestnut have treated her with extreme love and kindness.
Despite the changes that have taken place behind the scenes the level of care
from the staff has been exceptional. The current owners rebranded but have put in some improvements which helped aid my mother in her final stages. This care home offers amazing care, I trust the staff and they treat the residents like family and always made me feel welcome whenever I came by which made me feel comfortable in knowing they were being open and honest in their care. Thank you!

We had to choose a care home for my mother during Covid and couldn’t visit any care homes at all. We were given a list from the council that was on their approved list. As Chestnut Lodge was just down the road from our mother's home, we did the virtual online tour which was very informative and that
was it, sold as seen and never regretted it one bit. A big shout to two seniors on the wing, you know who you are, thank you for your care.

If you have a loved one who needs care do not put them in here. My mum went in 4 weeks ago and passed away yesterday. The buzzer she had in her room did not work most of the time and despite us and social services raising this for over 2 weeks it was never fixed. She was never taken out of her room
other than to have a bath once a week, even after we took a wheelchair in for them to use. For tea, she was constantly given jam sandwiches and soup. The manager never introduced herself. We did ask for her to meet with myself and social services in mum's room but she sent a nurse instead. My mum's life was miserable in here. The staff did their best but when you only have 2 care assistants and one nurse to deal with 20 patients it is a near impossibility to cope. On the morning she died we were taken to her room as we had received a call to say she was poorly. We got there to find she had already passed away and they never even told us. It was a massive shock.

My father was only in Chestnut Lodge Care Home for six days where he sadly passed away. All the staff through his end-of-life care were brilliant and showed genuine empathy with nothing being too much trouble. Even though we didn't use the facilities (dining room, lounge etc.) I observed that they were
of a good standard. rooms are also of a good standard and can be adapted to personal needs. The home provides well-maintained surroundings and improvements are taking place. If you are looking for care for one of your loved ones then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Chestnut Lodge. Thanks again to all.

I can not praise Calderdale Retreat enough for the way my mum was treated whilst spending the last eighteen months plus of her life. My mum went to the care home and perked up, making friends with lots of people in there. The staff were amazing, they treated my mum with dignity and respect, they did
lots of stuff with the residents and I witnessed this first-hand. I can not praise the staff enough for the way my mum was treated in the last few weeks of her life. The care she received from all the staff was more than we could have asked for. Even down to the respect and dignity in her final hours. They looked after us in the final hours too even after Mum passed. They even had some of Mum's loungewear made into a memory bear for us which was totally unexpected. I can not recommend this care enough to people for their loved ones.

My brother moved into the home in May 2019. It was a difficult decision for myslef and my family to make. At that time, he was an alcoholic and could not look after himself in any capacity. The carers and team took over his care with compassion and gave him an extra four years, which we never expected.
He was given the care and support he required. He was happy with the activities and loved the staff immensely. I cannot thank them enough for their care and dignity given to him in his last months. He passed away on 16.1.23.

My dad has been at Calderdale Retreat for over twelve months now and I am really pleased to say he likes being there very much. They have got to know his likes and dislikes and everyone treats him with respect. They encourage him to join in the activities and all the staff are lovely with the residents.
All areas are kept lovely and clean and the food is great and plenty of it. My dad does get confused sometimes but the staff are used to this and help him feel okay again, so needless to say I am happy with this home.
