Northbourne Court care home, located in the busy shopping area of Sidcup in the London area, is a care facility providing residential care for older people living with dementia.

Northbourne provides a wealth of support services for people living with dementia, with the aim of not just providing care and comfort, but also a new, positive and more engaging stage in their lives. The team of qualified and attentive staff provide 24-hour specialist person-centred care.

Each suite has its own lounge and dining area overlooking the internal gardens or grounds. All of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities and each suite has its own colour scheme.

At the heart of Northbourne Court is its Philosophy of Care, The Eden alternative, where social interaction and engagement are encouraged and boredom is eradicated by addressing the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom within the home.

Lovely staff. I visit 2 or 3 times a week. My sister seems quite happy. She doesn't think a lof of the food menu, not very hot she said. She loves the entertainment.

The staff were very caring and kind, and nothing was too much trouble for them, especially the lead carers. The Jubilee entertainment was excellent and well organised. Despite being very busy, the staff always had time to chat and respond to my partner's needs. The food was limited in choice and often
lukewarm - needing to be reheated in the microwaves - which was done willingly.

Not very happy with the cleanliness of his room or corridor. Doesn't look as the room has been swept for a few weeks or under the bed. Same crumbs around units and in between them for at least two weeks. Even wiped the tops of units down myself and the cloth was filthy - the floor is dirty in rooms
and under the bed. Corridors need hoovering or sweeping and the room smells.

I have no doubt that the dementia care facilities at Northbourne Court are of a very high standard. My experience with the carers has been reassuring and they are all super helpful and friendly which really puts family members at ease. My only complaint is the level of communication that family members
receive, particularly from receptionists who do not know any information about the residents or answers to procedural questions. This issue should be bridged with a liaison officer who has weekly or fortnightly calls with the residents family members to update them on the situation and the resident's health. I have called four times over the past week for an update and the receptionist has failed on all accounts to seek the answer. This is extremely disappointing, frustrating and to be frank she seems unbothered. The poor communication really portrays a bad image and lets Northbourne down. As a family, we currently feel disconnected.

My mother resided on 'Hardy' from August 20017 until she passed away on 7th January 2020. She had dementia and could be quite a task for the staff, especially at bath times etc. Close relative are distressed when they see the person they love greatly become so different. Your staff cared for her in
such a way that it gave us (her son and daughter) great confidence and reassurance that she was as well and safe as was humanly possible. We can never thank you enough.

I think it is a wonderful home for my mother to make her forever home. The only thing I would like to see improved is the security. I see you have a five-star rating. I feel to make it a proper five-star, visitors should sign in and get a badge which will only allow you into the ward that your relative/friend
is resident in. Other care homes use this system.

My mother has recently become a resident at Northbourne Court and I am so impressed with the care she is receiving from the caring, friendly staff. The family joined Mum for Christmas lunch at Northbourne Court, the chef, kitchen staff and every member of the team who organised it did an amazing job.
They created a winter wonderland with a superb lunch and the warmest of welcomes. Northbourne Court is a gem of a care home.

My dad has been here since October 2018. He came in on respite care and stayed permanently. The staff here are caring, respectful and clearly happy in their work. They have built an excellent relationship with both my dad and us as a family. My dad is now receiving end of life care and we could not
have asked for more for them with regards to Dad's care and their compassion towards us. Management, carers, cleaners and all staff are wonderful.

Today we had a Mother's day lunch. First time since mum has been here (Jan 2014) It was very nice, room/tables laid out very well. Menu and drinks very good. Excellent idea for residents who are unable to go out.
Services since the housekeeper/service managers arrival have much improved. Today was
a good example of initiatives she has included.

My father has been a resident for 2 years at Northbourne Court at Sidcup within a dementia ward. During his stay, he has been supported and cared for to a very high standard.
As a family, we are consulted and informed of any events and changes in regards to my father and we all feel reassured that
he is in good hands. The staff within the Chaucer ward are very kind, professional and incredibly;ly compassionate.

A celebration of Mother's Day - Sunday 31st March 2019. My wife, brother and I had a wonderful day yesterday to celebrate Mother's Day in the Piazza, Northbourne Court Sidcup. They had laid out the tables beautifully. The entertainer provided brilliant music before lunch for all the residents and some
even got up and danced. The food was excellent. In all, we had a good time thanks to the hotel services manager, the activity coordinators, and the cafe bar assistant. Also the receptionist, who was on duty - what a wonderful team!

Northbourne Court organised a lunch to celebrate Mother's Day. I ate with my friend, a most enjoyable meal. The dining area looked pretty with pink napkins, each table was decorated with beautiful little teacups and saucer containing fresh flowers. The meal included wine and liqueurs. It was such a
lovely idea to eat together on this special day. Once again, Northbourne has shown what a thoughtful and caring place this is. I congratulate the staff for producing an excellent meal.

Mum did not settle on arrival and was very agitated. The staff were very good and settled her, after telling us to wait in the Piazza. She is now happy here and eating and drinking well and joining in with activities.

The home laid on a Mothering Sunday lunch. The food and service were excellent. There was a very nice atmosphere. The tables were nicely decorated. It was good to spend the time with Mum. Thanks to everyone who was involved with the lunch.

Paula Igwe-Chinwo

Paula Igwe-Chinwo, the Registered Manager of Northbourne Court, has worked in care for over 13 years, working with mental health, learning disability, autism, physical disability, stroke, dementia and nursing care. She has worked in residential care homes, nursing homes, stroke units a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, supported living, domiciliary care and a day centre.


Her qualifications are:


LLM, Masters in Law
LLB Law
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Health and Social Care
Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care and Management


Paula is most proud of achieving her registration as a CQC Registered Manager; she believes the morale of care staff is paramount to achieving a quality service that will enhance the wellbeing of the person(s) being cared for. She has a particular interest in bringing active life into the environment of those living in care homes to ensure they have a fulfilling time whilst living in care.
