Queen Elizabeth House Care Home in Bickley is one of the best care homes in the Bromely borough of London. Delivering outstanding Residential to the older people of the area the home is a lovely place to live and work. Queen Elizabeth House is full of character, is purpose-built and enjoys all the facilities that you would expect.

But the real magic of the home is not the building but the people who live and work there. When you visit QEH the feeling you get when you walk through the door and witness how happy the residents are, how involved they are in the day-to-day running and how the staff strive to maintain their independence is a delight. Whether interviewing new staff, answering the phone on reception or helping design the menu their residents are fully involved.

The loving team is led by a long serving and very experienced home manager who prides herself on ensuring the residents live their later years to the full. She cleverly balances keeping them safe and well whilst ensuring they retain control of their own lives and continue to make their own decisions.

The large and accessible gardens belie the home's location in the heart of the city and afford the residents the opportunity to spend as much time outside as possible. With raised beds and easy access borders the residents have done much of the gardening themselves, either directly, or through experienced instruction to the gardeners from the comfort of their chairs.

The quality of the care is without question and their long-standing record of CQC compliance speaks for itself. In 2018 Greensleeves Care was named as the best charitable care home group in the UK and Queen Elizabeth House was a big part of why the Trust achieved that accolade. If you are considering a care home in this part of London you should definitely visit QEH before you make your final decision.

At the time of writing, my husband and I are completely satisfied with the care being provided by the staff at Queen Elizabeth House.

My mother was moved from a different care home in a dangerously poor state of health and well being. With hard work and care the staff at Queen Elizabeth House have turned her around. Her dedicated nurse has a great relationship with her, tirelessly trying to get the best out of her. I can’t thank her
and the rest of the staff enough. The home is clean and comfortable and all the staff have the residents best interests at heart.

From first visiting Queen Elizabeth House (QEH) for suitability, the building itself and the garden/car park were pleasing to look at and well kept, with easy access for both buses and trains. Once inside, the reception area was bright and welcoming. There were no unpleasant smells often found in care
homes. The atmosphere was good. The lounge extremely comfortable, colour coordinated, with large windows. The dining room, well spaced tables, nicely laid. Bedrooms of a good size. En suite toilet and wash hand basin. Library and hairdresser for residents.
The residents are treated with the utmost respect and kindness. The staff provide all sorts of different entertainment and outings. Garden parties and fairs in the summer months. The concern shown for residents is second to none particularly in regard to health problems. The home is clean and the food is good. I have a very happy friend, who says, "I like everybody here, moving was the best thing I did". Praise and many thanks to the caring staff.

My mother has been in Queen Elizabeth for 4 years and the staff are wonderful. They are always kind, caring and cheerful. The care home is spotlessly clean and mums room is always clean and tidy. The food is excellent and home cooked. The garden is kept beautifully, I really cannot fault this home.

The lunchtime menu should be reviewed on a fortnightly basis. The meals are too predictable and very little variety. Why not serve pizza or lasagne.

The showers have been out of use for two weeks. My aunt was offered a bath but is totally unable to climb in. No hoist??

Reply from B. Simms Dick, Home Manager at Queen Elizabeth House

All menus are reviewed quarterly by the residents in the home and based on their choices and/or medical needs meals are served. For each course, there are 3 choices available.
The wet room in question had a major leak which required the floor to be removed. Residents were offered the use 2 other bathrooms both with over the bath showers and a seated hoist.
The works to repair the wet room is complete.

My mother is very happy at Queen Elizabeth House. The staff are very friendly and treat my mum very well. She seems to have a lot of fun with them and there is a great deal of two-way communications with her.

I have found a caring, knowledgeable and safe attitude with the staff at Queen Elizabeth House. That my mother is in as good a condition that I find her is a testament to the staff at the home. The home does not compromise on care.

Queen Elizabeth House has been my mother's home for over six years. She is nearly 93 and her care needs have changed significantly during this period. The standard of care has been excellent throughout. The carers are thoroughly trained, they encourage residents to be active, they maintain high standards
of hygiene and cleanliness, the food is very good and they have communicated very well with my sister and I on all issues relating to my mother.

The carers and the support staff work as a very impressive team and take pride in maintaining the dignity of those for whom they are caring.
I frequently refer to Queen Elizabeth House's high standards when discussing with others my mother's care and I do not hesitate to recommend Queen Elizabeth House to those who are looking for a care home for themselves or for a friend or family member.

Mum has been a resident for several years now and I have always been happy that she is being cared for in a friendly, clean and professional way.
The home is clean and always smells fresh and the food is excellent.
When visiting, there is always someone there to talk to if I need any information or
any update on Mum’s well being and the carers are all very kind.
I would thoroughly recommend Queen Elizabeth House to anyone looking for a small friendly care home for an elderly person.

I think the care at Queen Elizabeth House is excellent. I have already recommended them to several people. My relative has been a resident for about two and a half years. She is always well dressed and her hair always looked well presented. The staff have always been kind and helpful to both her and
us. We are always kept up tt date with any change in her treatment or physical wellbeing. She was recently confined to bed for three weeks or so. As a retired nurse, I was impressed with the standard of care she received at this time.

After viewing 18 different care homes my mother entered Queen Elizabeth House in November 2009. This was by far the best care home I had viewed, it was clean, smelt fresh, staff courteous and felt more "like a hotel" than a care home. Nothing has changed my mind about Queen Elizabeth House since the
day my Mother moved in there almost 8 years ago.

My mother has always been treated with care and respect, her room kept clean and tidy, her clothes washed and aired properly, staff interacting positively and respectfully with her. The menu and food provided have been first class, the entertainment controlled and varied and residents encouraged to go on external excursions (if able), birthdays celebrated admirably.

Whenever I visit I have been greeted well, always kept up to date on my mother's well-being (often receiving telephone call updates), plus have been involved in the Monthly Care Plan reviews for my mother.
Queen Elizabeth House is definitely a place I would recommend and if I need somewhere in later life would be happy to enter.

My father is extremely happy living at the home. The staff have got to know his specific needs and tailor their care towards them. This makes for a light-hearted and enjoyable experience for him. The activities are varied and challenging but also a lot of fun. The home is spotlessly clean, bright and
very welcoming for friends and relatives to visit. All in all, I am very pleased with the home and its staff and am delighted I chose it for my father.

My mother moved into the home over three years ago at the age of 90 following a fall when we realised she could no longer cope by herself.

Once in the home, her general health improved considerably and she has been able to play an active part in the home's activities. The management and staff provide

a caring and secure environment which certainly provides us with considerable peace of mind. I have no hesitation in recommending Queen Elizabeth House.

Queen Elizabeth House has, for the last year, provided my aunt with a new home in which she has been very happy. She has lots of new friends at the same time as being able to continue with her ongoing social life. Her friends and family are always made very welcome. Her care is extremely good, she thrives
on the good food and personal care she receives.

My mother has been a resident of Queen Elizabeth house for over 6 years. During that time her needs have changed, but she has continued to receive excellent care. The home has a wonderful, caring ethos. All the staff know each resident and treat them as individuals. The residents' dignity is maintained
at all times.

Residents are offered stimulating activities plus visits to local places of interest. Pupils from local schools often visit. There is a pleasant garden. Relatives and friends are encouraged to take an active part in events such as the summer and Christmas fayres. The home is staffed by dedicated, caring people. From the cooks to the maintenance man, from the manageress to the carers and office staff, everyone works tirelessly on behalf of residents. Residents' care plans are regularly reviewed with the resident and their relatives. The expertise of the senior carers is most reassuring and appreciated. "Completely professional, yet personal and caring" - sums them up.

My mother came to Queen Elizabeth House in April 2017, following a stay in hospital. Having to move her to a care home was a very emotional anxious time for her and all the family. She was greeted at the door on arrival, shown to a lovely clean room with ensuite facilities and made to feel very welcome.

I

cannot speak highly enough of all staff at Queen Elizabeth House, they helped her every need in a very kindly and caring manner. She soon gained more confidence and strength. There are daily activities and excersize classes which keeps her joints and mind active. She loves the food and looks forward to meal times. Every effort is made to make sure the residents are safe and cared for, and treated with the dignity and respect they so deserve.

Queen Elizabeth House is very well run and managed and her staff are always on hand to attend to any situation that should arise day or night. My family have peace of mind that she is safe, cared for and contented.

Our mother joined Queen Elizabeth House in April 2017. Since then her confidence and well-being has so much improved despite her partial sight loss and health issues.

We found the staff to be dedicated and caring - nothing is too much trouble and we are happy knowing she is in a caring, safe and

comfortable environment with delicious food and friendly residents who share the events and entertainments.

One of my main life rules is to always treat others as I wish to be treated myself. I believe this sentiment is embodied by the staff of Queen Elizabeth House. The residents are cared for with natural friendship, kindness and compassion delivered with a happy demeanor. Residents and staff have a visibly
mutual respect for one another and work together for the smooth running and harmony within their home. And it really does feel like HOME!! WELL DONE QEH.

Cannot fault anything. Staff are very helpful and keep the family informed me re any problems/concerns experienced by our mother and themselves. After 11 weeks in hospital, it was apparent our mother needed 24 hour care and as a very independent lady we had our concerns how she would adjust. She is
now happier in herself knowing caring staff are always on hand. She is treated with respect and dignity, and the staff take time to get to know her. As a family we have peace of mind and are able to visit whenever we wish. Being a smaller care home it is much more personal. We have a good relationship with carers and management. Very pleased and impressed.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.704)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.704) out of 10 for Queen Elizabeth House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.904 for Queen Elizabeth House is calculated as follows: ( (85 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.904

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Queen Elizabeth House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

QEH is an award winning home which prides itself on the ethos that it is run ‘for the residents and by the residents’. The staff and the management team take pride in the knowledge that all residents regardless of their cognitive needs have a voice, choice and total control. The residents are actively involved in the management of the home from managing the main office, marketing the home, running the weekly shop, running daily film shows, interviewing staff, participating in catering committees, theatre groups, designing the garden, bathroom and all refurbishments within the home. Residents are empowered to lead the life of their choice, with support to maintain any likes, dislikes, hobbies and social needs and/or desires they might have.
