Queen Elizabeth House Care Home in Bickley is one of the best care homes in the Bromely borough of London. Delivering outstanding Residential to the older people of the area the home is a lovely place to live and work. Queen Elizabeth House is full of character, is purpose-built and enjoys all the facilities that you would expect.

But the real magic of the home is not the building but the people who live and work there. When you visit QEH the feeling you get when you walk through the door and witness how happy the residents are, how involved they are in the day-to-day running and how the staff strive to maintain their independence is a delight. Whether interviewing new staff, answering the phone on reception or helping design the menu their residents are fully involved.

The loving team is led by a long serving and very experienced home manager who prides herself on ensuring the residents live their later years to the full. She cleverly balances keeping them safe and well whilst ensuring they retain control of their own lives and continue to make their own decisions.

The large and accessible gardens belie the home's location in the heart of the city and afford the residents the opportunity to spend as much time outside as possible. With raised beds and easy access borders the residents have done much of the gardening themselves, either directly, or through experienced instruction to the gardeners from the comfort of their chairs.

The quality of the care is without question and their long-standing record of CQC compliance speaks for itself. In 2018 Greensleeves Care was named as the best charitable care home group in the UK and Queen Elizabeth House was a big part of why the Trust achieved that accolade. If you are considering a care home in this part of London you should definitely visit QEH before you make your final decision.

My mother has been in the house for 5 and a half years, she is now 95 years of age. When she first moved in she absolutely loved it but perhaps because she has been a resident for sometime is not so enthusiastic. She has always been well looked after and the carers are first class and treat my mum with
kindness and dignity. She is still aware of everything but is physically weakening. This year a lot of the residents have either left or died so quite a few of her close friends are no longer there which is upsetting for her.

My friend has been a resident here for over four years and in that time I have witnessed a change in her, from shy and withdrawn to sharing her sense of humour with fellow residents and staff. The facilities within the home are modern and updated regularly which enable residents to reach and maintain
their potential. The standard of care I have witnessed is impressive, carried out efficiently, efficiently, compassion and dignity. The room decoration is of a high standard and are homely and spotlessly clean. Mealtimes are sociable and the food is presented beautifully, and has been selected by the residents. This home moves from strength to strength in under the guidance of a strong and effective management team.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.704) out of 10 for Queen Elizabeth House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.904 for Queen Elizabeth House is calculated as follows: ( (85 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.904

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Queen Elizabeth House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Beverley writes:
QEH is an award winning home which prides itself on the ethos that it is run ‘for the residents and by the residents’. The staff and the management team take pride in the knowledge that all residents regardless of their cognitive needs have a voice, choice and total control. The residents are actively involved in the management of the home from managing the main office, marketing the home, running the weekly shop, running daily film shows, interviewing staff, participating in catering committees, theatre groups, designing the garden, bathroom and all refurbishments within the home. Residents are empowered to lead the life of their choice, with support to maintain any likes, dislikes, hobbies and social needs and/or desires they might have.
