Maitland House is a purpose-built residential care home built in 1996. It is less than one mile from Reading town centre in a quiet conservation area.

The home helps older people to live as independently as possible by providing 24-hour care, support and companionship, in a warm and friendly environment.

Residents are valued and treated with dignity and respect. The home’s highly-trained, dedicated and friendly staff take the time to get to know residents so they can tailor care to suit their needs. The home is run by a charity; any profits are used to improve services to residents and secure the long-term future of the home

Maitland House has a family feel. Residents are free to organise their own days and the home runs daily activities and events. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit at any time. Residents benefit from its lovely well-maintained garden and home-cooked nutritious meals.

I would like to pass on my thanks and gratitude to the manager and team, especially the chef for the excellent perfectly cooked turkey and meal in general. Last year's meal was very good though this year's was certainly superior. The care workers had also been roped in and they also went that extra
mile. As a son-in-law of one of your residents at Maitland House, I have been delighted by the choice of home's my wife had made for her step-father.
Well done to all, I do hope that the whole team gets to see my grateful thanks for a great time at today's lunch.

My Aunt has lived at Maitland House since 2019 until she passed away recently. She especially loved the garden. She was very happy at Maitland House. The staff have always been very kind, courteous and professional. They have provided an excellent standard of care. I would not hesitate to recommend
Maitland House.

I spent 2 weeks respite at Maitland House. I was looked after with kindness and understanding and the other residents were welcoming and friendly. I would recommend Abbeyfield unhesitatingly as a care home where care and kindness come first.

Dad came to you in March 2023, and from day one, Dad has been made to feel very welcome.
My sister and I have found the team at Maitland House to be very friendly, from management to all the carers. After we come away from visiting Dad, we both know he is in safe hands with your team until our next
visit.
Maitland management and staff keep up the good work.

My mother has settled well into Maitland House. She enjoys participating in the range of activities and outings available. These are all very well organised. The carers are extremely attentive, supportive and professional in approach. An excellent standard of hygiene is maintained. There is a lovely
homely and relaxed atmosphere to Maitland House. Whilst we are still waiting for some issues relating to her room to be sorted, Mum very much enjoys having a view of the lovely garden.

Since my dad became a resident at Maitland House Care Home in the summer of 2022, we have been impressed with the professionalism and level of care provided. He often referred to the accommodation and surroundings being likened to a hotel and he loved the place and the people, both staff and residents.
The staff attended to his every need, always polite and courteous. In the last few weeks of my father's life, the staff at Maitland House went above and beyond our expectations. They supported both my father and our family in this most difficult of times.

My mother has been under the care of Maitland House now for just over a year and we have seen a marked improvement in her health, confidence and well-being during this time. She enjoys the relaxed and safe environment provided by the staff, engages with activities that are run and now eats more than
she used to which is great to see. The room facilities are perfect for her and she often looks forward to spending time with other residents playing scrabble and other board games. Moving forward we hope to continue to see the high standards being kept and would highly recommend this facility, the staff are great!

Since my dad entered Maitland House in June 2022 the staff have been exemplary in their care for him. We have been satisfied with every aspect and we feel at peace that he is in the care of people who are capable, kind, attentive and respectful of his wishes. The family visit him 3-4 times weekly and
friends are also regular in their visits. The managerial staff and carers alike have been helpful to us and kept us informed at every stage. Under their excellent care, my dad has improved, especially in his mobility and continence and this is in no small part due to the gentle but persistent encouragement of the carers. The home has a lovely comfortable feel about it, it is always clean and never smells unpleasant. We are so grateful that Dad is somewhere where he is safe, people are looking after him and it is somewhere we like to visit!

Reply from Iain Looms, Marketing Manager at Maitland House

I would like to see the residents given more stimulation, not just in the form of activities arranged but also more time spent just talking to residents and encouraging them to talk to other residents. Currently at Maitland House in communal areas, residents sit without talking and as a result, many
fall asleep.
Maitland House still maintains strict mask wearing for visitors and exclusion for taking tea with their relatives. Although I appreciate that this is to protect residents from infection, other care homes have now relaxed this policy, suggesting it comes from government guidelines and not regulations. I believe this now needs to be reviewed. A less rigid policy in face mask wearing helps the residents to join in conversations as they can hear easier and having tea together makes for a more social visit.

Reply from Iain Looms, AVWS Central Office at Maitland House

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your comments. We have recently had a successful recruitment drive to increase the number of volunteers we have. Our volunteers spend some time in the home sharing stories, joining activities, and generally helping create a stimulating and social environment.
During COVID, volunteers were not able to attend homes so are certainly enjoying having them back!
Regarding the wearing of face masks – We are constantly reviewing the guidance and conducting regular risk assessments. We felt that with the restricted testing in the community, and the recent spikes in infections heading into the Autumn /winter period, it would be best to air on the side of caution for the time being. This is under review and we will certainly be looking to ease the wearing of face masks for visitors as soon as external factors deem it safe enough to do so.

The Church has organised "songs of praise" on a monthly basis for many years at Abbeyfield and it's a joy to see the residents singing traditional hymns and enjoying a thought-provoking talk. On average 12 to 15 residents join us every month and we have had to move to the dining room from the lounge
as numbers increase, we are grateful to the staff and to the activities organiser who are so helpful in bringing the residents to our meetings, we look forward to starting our time together again when circumstances allow.

My mother lived at Abbeyfield House for about 18 months and once said to me "I never though I would be so well cared for". It is a real home for home with a stable group of staff who genuinely show affection and care for the residents. A variety of interesting activities are provided and birthday and
festivals are celebrated, with a birthday and Christmas present from the staff. It is a community that the family feel part of and are involved. Mum had a good keyworker but sometimes, channels of communication were unclear to me.

My mother has been here for 1 year. Every time I have come to see her I am struck by the kindness, friendliness and happy disposition of all the staff here. My mum is very settled and happy here, because of the way she is looked after. If I was ever in the situation of having to go into a care home
I would happily choose this one.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.043)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.043) out of 10 for Maitland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.650 for Maitland House is calculated as follows: ( (41 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.65

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.393 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Maitland House is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.6 = 0.893

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
