St Lukes is a purpose built home in the charming Caversham area of Reading, close to the village of Emmer Green and the picturesque village of Sonning.

St Lukes provides care for elderly residents. They offer several types of stay depending on the level of support required - from long-term residential care to short stay and respite breaks. The home benefits from a safe, comfortable environment called 'The Oaks' that specialises in the care of older people living with a dementia.

St Lukes is a purpose built home that has been tastefully furnished and equipped to a very high standard to provide accommodation in three neighbourhoods. Daffodil and Lilac areas are designed over one level and Oaks provides accommodation on two levels. Residents have a choice of lounge and dining areas throughout the home. There is a hair salon, activities room with computer and assisted bath and shower rooms have also been incorporated. There is easy access for residents to the landscaped gardens and walkways as well as shady, private courtyards.

Life at St Lukes is very much home from home and an active lifestyle is encouraged, with friends and relatives always welcome. The activities organiser arranges a varied social calendar of activities and entertainment in groups and on a one to one basis. St Lukes ensures that residents receive meaningful occupation tailored to who they are. The home has transport available for trips into the community and there is a weekly activities programme with monthly entertainment.

St Lukes & The Oaks is a wonderful care home because of its fantastic, caring and efficient staff. I am very pleased with Mum's care needs being met. I would, however, like more feedback on how she is doing instead of me having to chase.

My Dad has been at St Luke's for 1.5 years and is generally very content. He has some lovely carers and helpers, who have adjusted to his needs and character. He enjoys the food and occasionally joins in with the activities provided, with encouragement. His room is kept clean and his clothes are washed
and processed quickly. I am very satisfied with the loving way he is dealt with. Dad suffers from anxiety, and there are times when this becomes overwhelming. The carers are great at reassuring him and calming him down, but he finds weekends particularly difficult, as there's often new staff who he doesn't know. This can cause him to spiral down, and I would say that every weekend I get a phone call from him that he's really upset.
I am always pleased with the interaction between myself and the staff, and I feel I am kept informed.

My father has been a resident of St Lukes for 2 years now and has not been so happy for a very long time. He is extremely well cared for and has settled in well. The accommodation is lovely and the staff are second to none. There always seems to be a lot going on with activities and plenty to occupy
the time. When we visit we are always made very welcome and feel part of the family, nothing is too much trouble. We love it there and hope to book in soon! Thank you St Lukes, you are wonderful!

My mum has been a resident at St Lukes for three years and she is very happy. She frequently says that the staff cannot do enough for her and how well she is looked after.
The staff always go the extra mile to make sure that Mum is happy and that is not always easy as she can be very fussy. Whenever
we visit we get a warm welcome and smiles.

Mum has been here for three years now. She is very happy here. She enjoys the activities and is well looked after. She is well fed, in fact I think she might be too well fed!
The staff are very friendly to us and caring towards my mother. They are always receptive to any comments or requests from us.

Residents are treated with care and compassion. There are lots of activities for the residents and the food provided is healthy and nutritious.
There could be a little more attention to the cleaning in the individual bedrooms but the main lounges are very bright, comfortable and clean.
Overall I am
very pleased with this home and Mum is happy here!

Since moving in my mother has come out of her former reclusive self and has joined the community at St Luke’s with great enthusiasm. She enjoys the activities, has made friends, really likes the staff and is generally much happier and healthier than she was before when she was living alone. The staff
are all extremely friendly, supportive and professional.

St Lukes is a warm and friendly place for my father to live. It provides everything he needs and is cared for by nice caring staff. It is also close to us for easy visiting. Food and cleanliness are also very good.

We moved my stepmum into St Lukes and The Oaks in early July. She was extremely resistant to go into a care home. With that said, she has thrived at St Lukes. She looks so much healthier and better taken care of. She says she really enjoys it. She participates in many of the activities and has made
friends. She says she is happy she has moved and that is music to our ears. The staff really seems to care about their charges!

Mum is generally well cared for although her dementia means she doesn’t always engage well with staff and other residents. However, it would be good to have more feedback on how she is doing and what she has or hasn’t engaged with.
The activity programme is getting better but there are still days when
no activities appear to be offered.

As a family, we've been very impressed with the care, friendship and dedication of all the staff at St Luke's. We were naturally concerned when both our parents reached the stage of needing 24-hour care, but St Luke's ticked all our boxes and gave us a great sense of relief knowing their health, safety
and well-being was in good hands. They have good connections with local surgery and health professionals and we've been reassured by the liaison and prompt responses of district nurses and emergency services when they have been needed.
The staff have always been very welcoming and friendly and nothing has ever been too much trouble.
It's a very enjoyable place to visit, the residents all seem very happy and contented and our parents say they can't fault it, which is very satisfying to hear.
Our family can't thank St Luke's enough and would recommend them highly.

My nan was cared for by St Lukes for two and a half years. When we first went there it was made out to be the best of the best. She seemed to be cared for but as the years went by we noticed bruising, nails not cut, no underwear on, etc. Everything was always covered up and they always had their excuses.
When she passed away they were more concerned about us emptying the room and the night staff were sat on their phone. When we went back the next day only one kind lady said sorry for your loss. I feel really sad for the other residents there.

My Mother has just passed away at St Lukes. I have never ever experienced anything so unprofessional before I had a phone call from a lovely doctor who was looking after my Mum (not care home staff at the home) we as a family had decided for her to get the treatment in the home rather than the hospital.
After
my phone call from the doctor, it was only two hours then she passed away with family by her side. Within 30 mins of my mum's passing two members of staff not following any whatsoever protocol were badgering my family for a name of undertakers to come and collect the body.
Not once did they offer any kind of condolence or try and help in any way, even sitting down using their mobile phone while my family was grieving.
I had to find a funeral home to come and get my mum, obviously trying to find someone was not that easy with everything that's happened.
So today, the day after I had not one person call me from the home to ask if there was anything they could do to help.

This review, of course, is seen by myself and experienced by my wife. By that, I see how she reacts to her stay. She is happy and relaxed, in as much as she can be with dementia. These periods at St Lukes are of short duration, periodically once a year, and when she returned, she is welcomed and remembered,
which is important to her and myself because of trust. If things were to go awry, I know the manager would sort it.

My wife suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I love her dearly, and for more than seven years, I cared for her to the best of my ability. However, recently I sustained a fractured pelvis and damaged vertebrae which made that no longer possible. Since then, she has been cared for by St Lukes with dignity
and attention beyond my dreams. She is very happy there and regards the staff more as friends than helpers. My only regret is that I did not arrange her move there much earlier.

Kim Franks

Job Title: Home Manager

Kim has worked with B&M Care for nearly 33 years. She started in 1990 as a Care Assistant and worked her way up to Manager in 2000. She has developed through experience, training and qualifications, achieving Level 4 in Health & Social Care, Foundation Management in Care, The Registered Manager’s Award, and the ‘Leadership Matters in Person-Centred Care’ programme (accredited by the Alzheimer’s Society and Surrey University). She has a passion for delivering highly person-centred care to the elderly and in particular, those living with dementia, where she strives to create an environment that feels homely, safe and stimulating, benefitting the residents, their family, friends and staff.
