My sister went into Swarthmore for 4 days before Christmas. I was extremely worried and upset but the staff on all levels were so kind to my sister and myself, putting us at our ease and explaining everything. My sister is settling in well and shows a marked improvement in all aspects of her daily life.
Thanks to the care she is receiving! Lovely food, lots to do, nice room and clean!

The staff have adjusted their care for my Mother as she became more dependent following a spell in hospital. I feel confident in their professionalism and in their care. They treat each resident as an individual and have gone out of their way to encourage her to eat. They are welcoming and hospitable
to visitors too.

I was very impressed with the warmth of welcome and assistance offered when I moved my 90-year-old godmother into Swarthmore at the beginning of December 2017 and these first impressions continued. The ethos/atmosphere of Swarthmore is one of care, relaxation and respect for all residents/staff. My
godmother spoke of being treated as an adult, not as a child who made mistakes. As a Catholic, I was uplifted by the respect and tolerance shown for all Christian denominations and other religions - or none, and the peaceful and smooth running of the home and friendliness and genuine concern of all staff. The wealth of activities offered and the cheerful decor of the home, especially over the Christmas season, was delightful. Meals were very good and my godmother loved her food and the offer of hot drinks, cakes and biscuits in the early morning and evening in her room. She enjoyed sitting in the dining room with people she knew. Although help was always available for bathing, laundry, etc she was grateful for being encouraged to maintain her independence and mobility as far as possible. Being converted old houses, Swarthmore has great character and a lovely garden and I sympathise with the cost of maintenance. I thoroughly recommend Swarthmore and am only sorry that my godmother did not have longer there.

Our mother is extremely well looked after at Swarthmore. The staff are very attentive and every action is taken to ensure the residents are as happy and contented as possible. Nothing is too much trouble and all the staff are very friendly.

On the whole, I think Swarthmore is a good care home, I find the staff friendly and affectionate towards my Mum when I'm there and the management warm and helpful. My Mum seems as happy there as a person in the late stages of Parkinson's can be. The main beef I have is the price they charge, £4500 per
month is a lot of money and I've just received a letter telling me that the fees are going up again, which they do every year. No specific reason is given for this and I'm not sure why they need an extra £200 per month. For the amount they charge, I might expect nicer food than they serve and more upmarket rooms, even before the rise in fees.

We are very happy with the level of attention and care provided to our 98-year-old mother by the Swarthmore care home.


Swarthmore is very professionally managed; she is supported by a very talented, competent, caring and enthusiastic team.


Given the lack of close relatives available to provide

personal support and comfort to Mum, we are extremely fortunate and grateful for the manner in which Swarthmore tends to her every need and keeps us across her problems and progress. Accordingly, we cannot speak highly enough of the level of service provided to her.

Overall the staff are excellent, especially the permanent staff members. Even temporary and cover staff seem to work to the caring ethos of the home. The building and facilities might be better at a modern purpose built home, however, what there is at Swarthmore is more than adequate and as a relative
of a resident, to me, the standard and quality of the care staff will always be key.

The staff at Swarthmore are the kindest and most efficient of people. I visit at least twice a week and only see carers who are doing their very best to help and look after the residents. The food is excellent and everyone seems to do just that little bit extra to help. Whenever I visit, they are all
so pleasant that it makes it a pleasure to meet them. On top of that, small things happen which are not always know about. When the washing is carried out (and back to the resident the same day) if one of the name-tags is coming off - someone will sew it on. Small things matter with Swarthmore and I truly appreciate all they do for my Mother.

Swarthmore is a lovely care home the staff are all very kind and helpful. My Mother is very happy and I have no concerns about her well being . The atmosphere feels warm and welcoming whenever I visit. There are also plenty of events and activities happening for the residents too which is nice. The
garden is just beautiful too.

I have been very pleased with the care that my mother has received in the home. The feeling that you get in the home is that the residents are the most important people and the staff understand that everyone is an individual with individual needs!
The home may not be as modern as a lot of other places,
but what it lacks in up to date facilities it makes up for by making sure that everyone receives attention they need. Daily activities certainly help.
The carers are only too pleased to try to make everyone as happy and contented as they can be in residential care. I certainly would encourage people to consider this home.

The person for whom I have responsibility is now 93. She entered Swarthmore with her husband some four years ago. Her husband died last year. I cannot praise the staff highly enough for, initially their care of both residents, and subsequently for the professionalism and empathy with which they have
cared for Joyce who now suffers from dementia. The support throughout her grieving, and the dignity with which they enable Joyce to participate normally in activities have been priceless for both her and me. I have the overall responsibility for her welfare. When I ask her how she is she replies, 'I'm very happy.' And I can see that she really is.

Job Title: Home Manager

Claire leads the team at Swarthmore; she has worked in care since 1994 and joined our home in 2013. Claire’s a Level 5 Registered Manager with Level 3 Housing Support and a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care – she’s also a qualified assessor for Health and Social Care and completed a Train the Trainer course on Moving and Handling. Claire has three children, who are regular visitors to the home, and enjoys family visits to Cornwall.
