Hargrave House care home is a listed building situated in the Saxon village of Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex. Built originally in 1875 in the ‘Jacobean’ style of red brick and stone dressing, AgeCare acquired the property in 2001 and developed it significantly over the coming years to house 58 elderly residents.

Residents can enjoy picturesque, tranquil surroundings and a short walk into the village centre for those that are ambulant. The home is split into two wings, one designated for residential care and a further secure wing developed specifically for those that suffer with various forms of dementia.

The home has the air of a magnificent five star hotel, with many amenities for the most discerning of residents.

My brother and our families could not be more impressed with the love, support and care provided by the staff at Hargrave House. Mum is content, engaged, well-nourished and happy. The staff show respect to all of the residents, recognise and celebrate their abilities and show real care, love and compassion
to Mum and all of the other residents. They keep me updated with any issues or news.

My relative, who has some form of dementia, is cared for in a safe and caring environment. I’ve eaten there myself, and the food is good, and the staff are respectful and supportive.

Alice Grace is run very professionally and all staff have very good knowledge of my husbands care needs. Any questions, requests or queries are dealt with promptly and the communal atmosphere is calm and happy. The decor is so stimulating and comfortable. I feel a sense of calm and relief that my husband
is in their care.

My mother has been well looked after during her time in Alice Grace. The staff are caring and kind. I have no complaints of any kind. Anything I have wanted attending too has been carried out promptly and with pleasure.

My mother is having difficulty in accepting everything being done for her and she has little independent choice. Even though there are many activities, she feels none are useful or practical. She could possibly benefit from being asked to do some small task, so she has a reason to get up and not feel
useless.

Attended the race night at Hargrave House. Great night. Residents and family members. A fun, lively evening for all. All I would say is that the music and signing was a bit loud for some residents. Looking forward to more resident and family events.

I attended a lovely race night on 27th September. There was a very friendly atmosphere where everyone was taking part. A selection of drinks and nibbles were provided and the presenter was very enthusiastic. It was a lovely opportunity for everyone to get together for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The staff are caring, compassionate, kind and understanding. They treat each resident with respect and a willing smile.


The home itself is clean and bright with attention to making it a home from home for the residents which is especially important for those with dementia. My father found it very

comfortable and the quality of the room he used was like his own.


I have recommended Hargrave House to a number of my contacts in the dementia carers group I attend and cannot praise the staff enough.

My mother is generally contented and relaxed at Hargrave House. Good routines have been established that have helped her settle. Most staff are helpful and listen carefully to requests and needs. She enjoys the activity that occurs even if she does not fully participate. My mother appreciates the food,
snacks and drinks that are provided and I am able to share valuable time with my Mum. Many thanks to those who work hard to help such vulnerable people.

Generally, the service is very good and it is very well managed. My only complaint so far is the room is fairly small and some (particular) staff can be quite short/sharp in response to my Mother's requests, although I do understand it is a difficult task.

We were unaware of these issues as you had not reported them to me, however, after our recent discussion we found that your safety concerns came about from your belief that other residents had entered your mother's room when she was at lunch. To ensure absolute peace of mind, we would lock your mother's room when she was not there.


In regards to rooms being "poor", you felt this was due to your mother not liking the colour of the wallpaper, which we agreed we will change during the next refurbishment (where she will be able to choose her own wallpaper).


Finally, in response to value for money, you felt that the charge for the room is excessive for the size. We have agreed to look to relocate your mother when a larger room becomes available. We are sorry that your views of Hargrave House are tainted in this way and we hope that what we have agreed to will help raise your opinions of our service.

Hargrave House is a lovely place for elderly people to reside in. The cleanliness is unsurpassable, and the rooms are tastefully decorated. There is always something going on which the residents are encouraged to participate in and the staff are very helpful and kind. They take them on outings which
is nice . Nothing is too much trouble for the staff to make the residents feel like they are part of a community. It makes people happy to leave members of their family there.

My mother has only been at Hargrave House for a short while but so far I am very happy with the way ALL the staff have cared for my mother & have responded to her various needs & demands. My mother adores all the carers, they are very smiley, kind & responsive, & everybody has helped her in getting
through the very difficult early stages of going into a home. My mother's room is an absolute delight; the attention to detail in the decor throughout the entire home makes 100% difference; it feels a 'happy' place to walk into, & as much as is possible, much like a home.

Had a lot of support for our mum who has been quite hard to deal with alot of the time. The home has stuck with mum even when showing some aggression at times . When I look around the home I see how clean and decorated to a very high standard . Makes you feel very relaxed when you arrive , always able
to help yourself to a cup of tea . Staff are always very friendly and approachable to ask a question . The staff keep us informed if anything happens to our mum and deal with any problems .
Felt very lucky that mum was able to gain a place at the home .

Very pleased with the care home, mum is very happy here. Food is excellent, I know this because she is eating, which she did not do at her last care home.

Shelley’s journey in the care sector began at 17, aiming to gain experience in patient care for a potential career as a drama therapist. However, her passion for caregiving led her to continue in the field for 17 years.


Starting as an agency carer, Shelley steadily advanced to deputy Manager at Waterbeach Lodge through her dedicated work and experience. Her primary focus is on ensuring the daily well-being of residents, a commitment she has carried through her tenure at Waterbeach Lodge for 10 years before joining Hargrave House in March 2024 as the Manager. She is deeply dedicated to providing a safe, well-led, and responsive service to residents and their relatives, finding immense satisfaction in making a positive difference in people’s lives.
