My father came to Umika Lodge in March 2023, he had previously had an unpleasant experience in a nursing home in Southend, so we were both a bit apprehensive. However, from when we arrived it was clear we didn't need to be. Umika has a lovely family atmosphere, it was warm and welcoming. Dad had some
major health issues and had several hospital admissions during his time at Umika, he was always pleased to return there when he was discharged. Dad gave the carers quite a few challenges but they rose to and above the challenge every time.
Dad was well cared for during the last months of his life and although it was never easy to leave him when I visited, I was always confident that he was safe and comfortable. The care provided extended to me too, especially during his last few weeks.
I would definitely recommend Umika Lodge to anyone looking for a care home for a relative.

Thank you for your kind review. Dad and yourself are very missed by all. His banter with the staff always brought a smile to our faces. Dad was a pure delight to have as part of our family. We hope you will not be a stranger.

My mum has been with Umika since the beginning of May. I have seen a complete change in her for the better, she now joins in in the lounge, her voice is now strong as before it was a whisper where she had spent so much time on her own. She's eating extremely well and now has what she fancies. The staff
are very friendly to both my mum and myself and always have a smile, and will always chat finding that extra minute to speak making you feel that your opinion is valued, I'm so happy that my mum is now living life with them instead of just existing and that is down to Umika staff which I really appreciate. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the staff as now she's happy I can relax, brilliant care.

Thank you for these words. It has been amazing witnessing Mum flourish here. Seeing her get involved with the activities and exercises was just amazing. She too has worked so hard to get back onto her feet. It is our pleasure to support her in achieving all she has in the short time she has been with us. We look forward to seeing more!

Just wanted to update my review from last year. My nan is so settled in Umika Lodge Care Home, she has made so many new friends. The staff are also fantastic and you can see how much they care about their residents.
My nan continues to thrive being at Umika Lodge and as a family, we are forever grateful
to all of the staff for ensuring she is always safe, happy and well looked after.
My nan also enjoys all of the daily activities Umika Lodge provides, and considering she has never really been someone who bakes or plays games, it’s been lovely to see her enjoying herself.
Thank you all.

Your Nan is very much part of what makes Umika Lodge a home. She is very much liked by staff and other residents and their visitors alike. Thank you very much for your kind words of support and encouragement.

Our dad recently passed away at Umika Lodge after a long battle with dementia. I cannot praise the home and staff enough. The home is clean, bright and well-maintained. The staff are all brilliant and showed such a lot of care for our dad.
Over the last few weeks, we visited daily and were welcomed
every time and looked after. A big thank you.

My mother took up residence at the Umika Lodge 6 months ago. She has completely settled in and is very happy there. The staff are caring, friendly and easy to talk to. My mother loves the freshly cooked food and eats very well. She enjoys the external entertainer/singer and dances along. The staff made
a fuss of my mother on her 80th birthday recently, which we really appreciated.

Reply from Veekash Bhowaneesing, Director at Umika Lodge Care Home

Thank you for your review! We have enjoyed helping Mum settle in. These times can be hard for all the family but we like to make everyone as welcome as possible. Soon the parties will be open to all! We have enjoyed watching her flourish and make friends on the dance floor.

My mum came to Umika Lodge in September 2021 and the difference in her is absolutely amazing. At home, she was not eating or taking her medication, but the home have somehow managed to help her put weight on and taking her medication is not a problem anymore. The staff are loving and very attentive
and I know my mum has her down days but the staff are wonderful with her. If anyone is worried about putting their loved ones into Umika Lodge, all I can say is don't be. They are very professional and nothing is too much trouble. The parties they do for their residents are fantastic and my mum loves having a good dance and sing along. Well done all at Umika Lodge, keep up the good work.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Your mum is such a loving person and it is a pleasure to have her living with us at Umika Lodge and you as a relative. She is the ' life of the party' and it doesn't take much persuasion to get her up to dance.

My mum is being cared for at Umika Lodge and the staff are absolutely brilliant, nothing is too much trouble for them. My mum is always laughing and joking with them. They put on a lovely party for my mum's 80th birthday and I cannot fault them.

The staff at Umika Lodge are amazing. They made my mum feel at home, right from the start and treat her with respect and dignity. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are all very friendly when I go to visit Mum and even pop into the room for a chat when they are free. They make you feel very
welcome and part of the family.

I had a really bad fall and came to this care home, which was excellent in every way. I could not have asked for any better in the way of help and care. I was feeling very low and all the help that I received was good for my recovery. I needed to be fit to fly and all the staff had helped me on my way.

Manager and staff most helpful and senior staff and carers were excellent. Cleanliness of service staff was excellent. Kitchen staff and cook, could not have asked for any better. My partner very much loves the Cherry Pie and eats all his dinners (really great). TV in his room and carer looking out
for him made him feel good and progress to get and feel well in himself gave him the confidence to get well from a really bad fall in his home.

Since the care home has been under new ownership, the care and facilities have improved to a much higher standard. The cleanliness and decor were changed immediately and I was impressed by the new menu. The management and care staff are very friendly which gives the impression of a family run home.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.195)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.195) out of 10 for Umika Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.833 for Umika Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (50 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.833

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.362 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Umika Lodge Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.8 = 0.862

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
