Located in St Cross, a tranquil part of Winchester, Brendoncare Meadway provides high quality permanent or respite residential care. Meadway has 13 bedrooms, making it feel more like a large family house rather than a care home. The home enjoys a lovely warm and relaxed atmosphere where care is tailored to meet each resident’s needs, helping them to continue to live as independently as they wish.

The compassionate team combine warmth and community spirit with caring expertise to ensure everyone feels ‘at home’.

The home’s mature garden is well stocked full of fragrant flowers and herbs, providing a happy place to potter for those with green fingers. The summer house, pergola and awning all give shade on sunny days.

The team are proud to hold a 5-star food hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (October 2022). The Chef Manager regularly engages with residents to understand their dietary requirements, personal preferences, and allergies.

All permanent residents are eligible for Brendoncare's Care for Life which ensures that once welcomed into the care home, they will not be asked to leave other than in exceptional circumstances.

My friend has been a resident at Meadway for the past five months and she is very happy there. I very much like the fact that it is so small - only ten residents. I am also very impressed by the friendliness of the carers. My friend's room is very nice and the sitting room and dining room downstairs
have just been redecorated and look extremely nice and welcoming. The food is good and there are quite a lot of activities if the resident wants to take part. I went to a 'relatives' meeting' a couple of evenings ago and I was very impressed by how the manager led the meeting, gave us news about recent developments and answered any questions. So far, very good!

As Dad’s mobility deteriorated, he asked me to investigate a care home. A difficult decision but I had a good feeling as soon as I walked into Meadway. It has a clean and tidy interior. Dad’s room is homely and recently decorated. He has his own en-suite shower room. The food provided is excellent quality,
freshly cooked on site and Dad has put on weight. I have also enjoyed a lovely cooked lunch there, the dining room has recently been tastefully decorated. The outside garden is lovely and Dad is able to get out most days, weather permitting and uses his walker around the specially designed paths.
The care team are extremely professional and Dad feels at ease in their company. They work well as a team, have a great sense of humour. The management staff are very efficient and maintain the smooth running of the home. There is a variety of activities organised, which Dad has appreciated and enjoyed.
I would highly recommend this small but perfectly run care home.

Having been admitted recently to Brendoncare Meadway Care Home for respite care, with a view to making it long-term, my father settled in well, particularly enjoying the food and attractive gardens.
The staff are friendly, extremely caring, always willing to help and treat my father with kindness and
respect. Communication with management staff has been very easy and positive. My family and I would thoroughly recommend this home.

I am 95. I had lived alone for 9 years after my wife's death. I had survived a stroke but had realized that my ability to live on my own was becoming limited. That persuaded me to send for a number of Care Home brochures from which I concluded that the home most likely to suit me was Meadway. A year
ago I had a bad fall and it was then obvious that I should, at least, seek a respite break and Meadway obliged. I had dreaded the prospect but was pleasantly surprised.
It is probably true that there is no place like home, but I believe that Meadway (as I have found it) is as near to it as you will get. I was fortunate to be accepted as a full-time resident and I continue to be amazed that the dedicated staff can be perpetually so friendly, kind and patient. Residents are not obliged to join in activities and the food, homely rather than pretentious, is really excellent.
I think those of us who are Residents at Meadway are very glad to be here, and I am glad to show my appreciation.

Reply from Holly Pidgley, Home Manager at Brendoncare Meadway

Thank you for your kind words. It is our honour to have you here with us at Meadway. It is a joy to read your review and know that you are happy and amazed with all aspects of the home from requesting a brochure, to respite care, to becoming a permanent resident. The decision to move mum to residential care was made easy when we visited Brendoncare Meadway. From the outset, the manager and her team were so welcoming and we knew mum would be in safe hands. This home is a unique care model providing a step up from home in a homely environment. Perfect for our
mum! The food is all home cooked and there are various activities taking place and a good rapport between staff and residents.
The home's biggest asset is its staff who provided amazing care for mum at all times, including the end of life
Thanks to the Brendon Meadway team we will always be grateful.

My mother-in-law has just received 8 weeks of respite care in Meadway. Her time there was so positive that ideally, she would have liked to have become a permanent resident. Unfortunately, her changing needs meant that she has had to move into a Brendoncare Home that could offer full nursing care. The
Home Manager did everything she possibly could, going above and beyond to help meet our additional requirements and then ultimately the move into nursing care. The family really appreciate all of her assistance with the arrangements and preparation for the smooth, seamless move. My mother-in-law loved the friendly atmosphere, hugely helpful, kind staff and delicious meals. I would strongly recommend respite or permanent care in this beautiful little home. A real gem in the Brendoncare group of care homes. Thank you!

Wonderful. The culture of kindness and compassion hits you on arrival. Nothing is too much trouble. The staff are amazing. The foods is very good and all of one's little food fads are catered for. My room is a good size with a pleasant busy view and the grounds are lovely. Perhaps there could be more
items that are recycled, e.g. tinfoil for charity.

Reply from Lisa Wallace, Home Manager at Brendoncare Meadway

Thank you. It was our absolute pleasure to have you stay with us. Thank you for choosing us to help you on your road to recovery. Your gift was a lovely surprise and displayed in the lounge for all to admire. Your quick wit is missed by all and we would welcome you back with open arms at any time. We will look to research into more recycling for charity, we already collect stamps and milk bottle tops but there is more that could be done, and thank you for suggesting that.

My father has been a resident at Meadway for just over a year now, and I cannot praise the staff there enough. Nothing is ever too much trouble, the standard of care is excellent, and Dad is so happy. It has been especially comforting that he has been there during these difficult Covid times - it has
taken a great weight off my mind as I don't have to worry about him being in his house on his own. I was looking back at photos of him today from around the time he entered the home and recent ones, and the difference is amazing - he has come on in leaps and bounds! I would absolutely recommend Meadway to anyone.

Meadway has many advantages of being small compared to other care homes since January 2018. I've had truly little to complain of. The staff in every role all work well together. Visitors comment on the warm, caring spirit here. We can all now and then have a good laugh together. Meals are excellent
wholesome full of variety and individual choices are easily achieved by the willing chefs. The new manager is busy getting to know all us residents and inspires confidence. I value the monthly C/E Communion service held there.

A truly lovely care home, sadly not a combination of words that one hears that often, but absolutely spot-on for Meadway.
Mum initially went to Meadway for respite care after a nursing home stay and four years later she's still there. She has a lovely, bright, spacious room and is surrounded by her
own furniture and possessions.
But, as nice as the surroundings are, it's the warm, friendly and highly capable staff that make the place. Mum has always been fiercely independent and the staff support this, but they're on hand if needed. The food is excellent and the staff are always happy to make something special for mum if she doesn't like or fancy what's on the menu. Without fail, the staff are always welcoming when we visit, offering tea or coffee (and sometimes homemade cake!) it feels more like a large family home than a care home.
Such a relief for the family, we're able to relax knowing that mum is well cared for and safe.

My Mum has been at Meadway since 1st February 2018. I cannot pretend she wanted to leave her home and go there but with her physical disability and developing dementia we had no option but to find a care home that could look after her better than I could.
This week three of her dearest friends came
to visit my mum at Meadway. They were warmly welcomed with coffee, followed by a delicious lunch. Our friends were thrilled with my mum’s light, bright bedroom, filled with furniture and pictures from “home”. They kept commentating on how fresh, clean and bright the whole building was. They loved the garden, which they knew would always be an important contributor to my mum’s quality of life. There was great interaction with the staff and everyone had such a happy time.
I believe our friend's opinion of what a care home was was totally changed by their experience at Meadway. But, most importantly they were so thrilled to find my mum happy and settled and to see “the old .....laughing lots”.

Reply from Mandy Gilbert, Home Manager at Brendoncare Meadway

Thank you, Beverly, for taking the time to review Meadway. It is lovely to have your Mum settled and living with us and wonderful to hear that her friends saw her happy and the ‘old’ her and enjoyed their visit.

Having worked at as General Practitioner I have encountered many different residential homes and care settings and can say without a doubt that we have been extremely fortunate in having found a place for my mother at Meadway. It is a small care home, and as soon as you go through the front door you
can sense how homely, relaxed and caring the environment is. The staff are attentive and experienced and take demands and difficulties in their stride. The food is excellent and individually tailored to the residents' wishes, and my mother is now eating a lot better and is delighted with the standard. There are comfortable places to sit, both inside and in the lovely gardens. The care is methodical and organised but flexible when necessary, and the staff are proactive in looking for extra ways to help. The manager is excellent, shows experience, commitment and sensitivity, and is respected by the staff. They are happy, work well as a team and are rightly proud of the care they offer.

Meadway is a very special place. Small, homely, very personal with a wonderful atmosphere. The rooms are spacious and residents make them individual and like home. The public rooms are light, airy and not at all institutional. Lovely gardens. But what makes Meadway is the staff - without exception,
caring, loving, relaxed, patient and kind - from the manager and administrator, through to the carers, cooks, cleaners and handyman. They take time with every resident and are always smiling and cheerful. They go the extra mile to cater for any individual requests or alternative food requests. They respond promptly day and night. My relative has settled very happily and is very happy with the staff and home. I cannot recommend highly enough! - so different from our previous experience of a very stylish but much larger home which despite high standards of care, fulfilling all the necessary standards, somehow lacked the personal touch of Meadway. This is 'home' rather than just a 'care home'.

Reply from Mandy Gilbert, Home Manager at Brendoncare Meadway

Last week I visited a friend who had moved into Brendoncare Medway and was amazed and delighted to find such a light, airy, fresh and friendly arrangement of rooms rather like the comfort of a country house (not a hotel).
So impressed was I that the very next morning I telephoned to reserve a place

As a C/E priest of the local parish, I visit regularly, taking a communion service monthly for any resident who wishes to attend. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Keen to assist residents to attend if they wish to and it is at all possible. The spiritual welfare of residents seems important
and residents are nearly always ready and waiting. Staff also tell me if anyone needs an extra visit.
Although I have been in this post only 7 months, the manager seems keen that I am involved in the life of the home.
My assessment is based only on visiting and observations during visits.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.944)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.944) out of 10 for Brendoncare Meadway is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.694 for Brendoncare Meadway is calculated as follows: ( (25 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.694

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.25 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brendoncare Meadway is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 13 registered maximum number of service users is 2.6, which has been reached with 3 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
