Located in St Cross, a tranquil part of Winchester, Brendoncare Meadway provides high quality permanent or respite residential care. Meadway has 13 bedrooms, making it feel more like a large family house rather than a care home. The home enjoys a lovely warm and relaxed atmosphere where care is tailored to meet each resident’s needs, helping them to continue to live as independently as they wish.

The compassionate team combine warmth and community spirit with caring expertise to ensure everyone feels ‘at home’.

The home’s mature garden is well stocked full of fragrant flowers and herbs, providing a happy place to potter for those with green fingers. The summer house, pergola and awning all give shade on sunny days.

The team are proud to hold a 5-star food hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (October 2022). The Chef Manager regularly engages with residents to understand their dietary requirements, personal preferences, and allergies.

All permanent residents are eligible for Brendoncare's Care for Life which ensures that once welcomed into the care home, they will not be asked to leave other than in exceptional circumstances.

I have been extremely happy with the care my mother has had in this home where she has been for the past 8 years. The staff have been very kind, caring and attentive to her needs, especially in the last few months when she has needed extra care. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this home to others.

We wanted somewhere with a family and homely atmosphere as well as excellent care facilities and support as needed. I had heard very favourable reports of BrendonCare over a long period of time, and as soon as I walked through the door of BrendonCare Meadway, I was convinced that I had found just where
Mum would want to stay and be very happy. It was just like entering a very well kept private house, with everything spotless and a very happy set of residents and staff.
From the first day she arrived to have lunch with her new friends, the warmth and care shown made her feel part of the family straight away, and upon our return, she was very well settled in and there was no question of her not wanting to stay permanently.
Mum loves the food, the staff, and the company and also now the weather is improving being able to potter around the lovely garden.

We would recommend BrendonCare to everyone if you want what's best for your loved ones as well as peace of mind for the whole family.

Brendoncare Meadway has a lovely feeling to it. When you walk in, it smells fresh and clean. There is a calm kind atmosphere. All the staff I have met are kind and polite. I am confident my Aunt receives great care. However, there are a number of minor issues that cause my Aunt stress. She is
afraid to mention them as she does not want to be seen as a trouble maker. These issues are very minor but if addressed would improve my Aunt's life. These are:

When her clothes come back from the laundry they are still damp so she has to dry them on her radiator in her room;
Fresh napkins are not provided at supper time and are reused from lunch. My Aunt has seen residents blow their nose on napkins and these are reused not necessarily by the same resident.
There are very little activities run for the residents. They are often left to entertain themselves. Activities that are supposed to the run often are not.

Brendoncare Meadway is working well for my mother and her family. I am happy that she is safe and cared for, albeit my mother does not always make it easy. The staff are good (indeed some excellent), though there are some ups and downs. An improved understanding of the relationship between bodily
medical problems and state of mind might be helpful to all. Management could be seen to be out and about more rather than sitting behind a computer. The one area of real concern that I have is the centralised Brendoncare accounting service, which I find distinctly amateur.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.944)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.944) out of 10 for Brendoncare Meadway is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.694 for Brendoncare Meadway is calculated as follows: ( (25 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.694

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.25 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brendoncare Meadway is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 13 registered maximum number of service users is 2.6, which has been reached with 3 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked in the care sector for 36 years starting in a geriatric hospital, I loved every minute of my career working my way through many aspects of nursing, dementia, domiciliary and now residential care. Recently due to health I have stepped away from the care aspect but did not want to leave it altogether, so I find myself at the slightly less hectic pace of housekeeping, but still within a job I love, looking after people who need that little extra help. I have been with Brendoncare Meadway since 2022 and every day is like working at home.

I loved Meadway as soon as I stepped into the care home as it has a lovely atmosphere. Being a small care home I am really able to tailor the menu choices to the residents.

The highlight of my day is talking to the residents and getting feedback on any of the home-cooked meals they’ve just eaten, whether that was breakfast, lunch or even afternoon tea or snacks.

When I am not at work my hobbies are crafts with sea glass or mosaics.
