Generals Meadow is a registered, family-owned and operated residential home established in 1985. They care for up to 19 people offering both full time residential and respite care. Generals Meadow is registered with the Care Quality Commission and achieved a 'good' rating in July 2022.

New ownership from experienced providers in November 2018, has seen extensive refurbishment throughout the home and grounds.

The aims for Generals Meadow are to maintain a homely environment for older people which respects their privacy, dignity and personal esteem.

The objectives for Generals Meadow

Generals Meadow strives to offer fair and equal treatment to all, regardless of age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, disability, religious belief or financial circumstances.

There are two managers who run Bradfield on a daily basis. They are supported by their manager and an excellent team of senior carers, 15 trained carers, three chefs and four domestic staff to uphold the aims and objectives of the home. Knowledge and experience are essential in this field of work.

The staff are responsible for meeting the individual needs of each resident as set out in their plan of care. To do this, trained members of caring staff are on duty 24 hours a day, one of which includes a senior carer. The owners are also the registered managers, in addition to the home manager. The owners and are on duty during the day and on-call at night, living close to the premises.

We are very pleased with the care provided to my father, he is extremely happy here and has also put almost a stone in weight on since moving from a previous care provider. It is also nice to deal with staff who show the care and dedication we could hope for, a pleasant change from facing agency staff
at other locations.

It makes us very proud to hear the feedback that your father and family are pleased with the care and progress which has been made during his time with us. We do not use agency staff at all, so yes this does provide continuity of care and the staff have got to know your father very well.
He has made some valuable contributions to our residents' meetings and by his request we moved his room about so he could watch the TV when he is in bed, improving and promoting his quality of life and choices.

We have found Generals Meadow to be the perfect home from home. The staff are lovely, always polite and have a smile on their face. They have all managed so well during Covid and the staff and management have all done their best with an extremely difficult situation. Nothing has been too much bother
for them. I would highly recommend Generals Meadow for a relative to make the transition from their home to this one.

Your mother-in-law always looks forward to your regular phone calls and visits which is so important to our residents' mental health, it's clear that she has a very caring family. She loves helping out in the home and picking fruit in the garden. It's a pleasure to have her with us she is always making sure that nobody gets left out.
Covid has been a challenge for everyone and we feel that we have done everything possible to keep the home as safe as possible whilst still encouraging the freedoms we all enjoy.

Generals Meadow and its staff are wonderful! The politeness, personal approach, attention to detail, cleanliness, catering and indeed everything is second to none. I cannot speak highly enough of everything that has been done in the 16 months since my mother moved to Generals Meadow. She had become
isolated, frightened, vulnerable and alone at her house and now she has true friendship and companionship and feels safe, loved and cared for in every way. Well done Generals Meadow, and thank you.

After regular visiting, I have been unable to have face to face meetings until very recently - either in a purpose-built pod outside or now, after testing and in PPE, in residents' room. The home has worked very well to reduce covid and the staff are excellent. As a retired registered manager I appreciate
this but continue (with the staff's approval) to send weekly letters/cards to those residents I knew well. A few have telephoned me and even sent me cards.

Before arranging for my sister to go into a Care Home, I visited four with my wife. Fortunately, we chose Generals Meadow.
The other three were very depressing to visit: they all had a hospital-like appearance and, in places, an unpleasant smell. My sister is a very stubborn person and, if she had
known, she would have refused to enter a Care Home. We, therefore, on the advice of her GP, told her a "little white lie" by leading her to believe that Generals Meadow was a luxury hotel (It certainly looks like it), specialising in providing accommodation for people in need of extra care.
Our initial favourable impression has been confirmed more and moreover the past six months. We have got to know many of the staff and are now fairly knowledgable about the way in which my sister is looked after. It is in all respects superb.

We are sorry to hear that the other care providers were not up to the standard you expected but happy that you found that the 'luxury hotel' environment at Generals Meadow was to your sister's liking. The Jacobean style of the property certainly doesn't look like many other care homes, so we are fortunate that we are quite unique in what we are able to offer in such a nice location with beautiful grounds.
Your sister has settled in very well and the staff love it when she sings to them. She has put weight on during her time with us, enjoys her meals and often tucks into her biscuit barrel in her room!
I think we have a pretty good routine and plan of care in place, however, if there is anything else we can do to accommodate your sister's stay with us please just let me know.

My husband and I (he is the brother of the resident) are extremely happy with the love, understanding and attention which is given to the resident at Generals Meadow. In fact, although we are both well into our eighties and are fortunate in having good health, should we ever need to go into a care home,
we would choose Generals Meadow every time! The building and its interior, as well as the gardens, are extremely well maintained.

The care home on appearance looks good, some staff are very good and caring but on the whole many do not show any care or compassion. The turnover of staff lately has been unbelievable, food standards have deteriorated and a gold wedding ring went missing when my friend could not even leave the room.
Had to ask a member of staff to clean her and her hands as she smelt awful. Manager!

It's such a shame and disappointing that you did not express your views about the home whilst your friend was being cared for by the team, as we promote an open and transparent culture, receiving good feedback throughout the four years we cared for them until the end of her life, providing enhanced care, equipment and support.
You said you were relieved she was able to remain at Generals Meadow.
To address your inaccurate assumptions made from infrequent visits.
-The missing item was investigated, and you were satisfied with the outcome.
-Two staff from 28 have moved on to other careers in the last 12 months.
-Our food hygiene rating is 5/5, comments from the latest resident meeting were very complimentary about the food where we serve home cooked meals, made from scratch.

Our mother moved into Generals Meadow in 2012, just before her 90th birthday, together with our father, who passed away in 2017. During her long period of residence there, including a change of ownership in 2018, she has always received excellent care. The staff have endless patience and compassion,
and we feel very fortunate that our mother is such good hands, especially in the current circumstances.

Our Mother was finding it difficult to live on her own but was adamant she did not want to go into a care home. After a lot of persuasion, she agreed to go for 2 weeks respite. After the 2 weeks were up she was offered another week stay which she took. In those three weeks, her attitude had changed
and now she is a full-time resident. She is a lot healthier and happier, has made new friends and is well cared for. The management and staff are very friendly and caring.
My brother and I viewed quite a few care homes but Generals Meadow came to the top of the list. The home is full of character and history and stands in lovely grounds. The rooms are a good size too.
We would definitely recommend Generals Meadow.

My 97-year-old father has been a resident at Generals Meadow for just over 3 years. He has a bright and airy room with views of the church from one window and the beautiful gardens from the other. The staff are friendly, kind, caring and considerate and the home is very well-led. I am always made to
feel very welcome when I visit Dad. The home is beautifully decorated and has a happy vibe. I feel very lucky that at the time of searching I was able to secure a place for Dad here. I have peace of mind knowing that Dad is well looked after and would highly recommend Generals Meadow.

My mother was in Generals Meadow for 11 years and was very happy there. In the past, there were a number of deficits - cleanliness of bathroom, carpets and curtains. However, now under new management, these issues are being addressed. Sadly not for my mother, who passed away in October. The care she
received in the closing months of her life was excellent. The staff did everything to make her as comfortable as possible.

You are correct in your observations that we have needed to invest a lot of time, money and thought into the refurbishment of the property since we took over the ownership 12 months ago. We have made good progress, prioritising the areas of improvement which included fire prevention and detection measures, staff training, decoration and refurbishment of the indoor and outdoor spaces. Half of the bedrooms have been completely refurbished, repainted with new carpets, curtains, new oak furniture, bedding and also the addition of shower en-suite bathrooms. It was a shame that we were not able to refurbish your mother's room during her time with us (now completed), however, her poor health took priority and as you have already mentioned, we provided excellent end of life care, respecting your wishes as a family whilst respecting your mother's dignity. Thank you for the staff Christmas gifts.

Mum moved into Generals Meadow in August 2018. She has Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia so her needs are ever-changing and often complex.
The new owners, who are both approachable and very knowledgeable, have embarked on an extensive and impressive programme of improvements. These are being cleverly
and thoughtfully carried out so as not to detract from the beauty of the home.
Our family are in most days visiting and there is always a welcome air of calm and tranquillity. The wonderful staff, who are cheerful, caring and kind are understandably loved by Mum. Mum is happy and with the help of the staff, has come to think of Generals Meadow as her home. They nurture a family feel here.
The home is spotlessly clean and it is to the whole team’s credit that it is easy to forget you are visiting a care home. Mum speaks very highly of her lovely meals which the residents enjoy together in the very beautiful dining room.

I have been visiting my father daily since mid-September. On every single visit, the staff have been unfailingly welcoming to me and kind and attentive to my father. They have taken trouble over his diet, hearing aid, tv. The residents have a steady varied programme of activities and all of them seem
content. Those I have asked have all said they were very happy with the home indeed. The general atmosphere is upbeat, cheerful and positive. A very friendly place.

My father has been in Generals Meadow for one year. He always said he would never go to a care home and was fiercely independent. An unexpected stroke left him with no choice. The care given to him has been second to none and he has made remarkable progress since admission. The staff treat all residents
with dignity and respect, they are consulted on all aspects of their care and regularly monitored for well being. There is a varied and stimulating range of activities to suit all tastes which are carefully designed to engage residents and provide them with social interaction. Staff help them if they need it as and when they ask for it. The home itself is in a beautiful setting and a very pleasant place to be. The owners have taken great care to improve and adapt the building to make it safe and secure. At the end of the day though, it's the staff that make it work. They are very caring, cheerful and helpful. This is reflected in the happy residents.

Lesley Dunkling

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2012

Lesley has been working at Generals Meadow since 2012, starting off as a Domestic and Night Care Assistant.
She has progressed over the years through her NVQ Level 2 & 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care taking roles as Senior Carer and Assistant Manager.
Since the ownership of Generals Meadow changed in 2018, Lesley has developed her knowledge and experience, worked and achieved a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership Management, awarded in 2023.


Lesley lives locally and has admirably brought up her children whilst still being a working parent, she has 6 children with two who still live with her and her husband.


Her hobbies and interests include holidays with her family, seeing her grandchildren and socialising with her friends and colleagues.
