The Laleham is a residential home registered to provide care for older people.  The Home has breathtaking panoramic sea front, pier and coastal views.  The period properties are sitting on Herne Bay's promenade, boasting on its door step the Waltop Gardens and Herne Bay pier.  The Laleham is located on the Central Parade which is regarded as a desirable road in Herne Bay, Kent that runs along the sea front and a short stroll from the town centre which is well served by local amenities and transport links.

The Laleham is managed by a registered manager and supported by qualified, experienced, and friendly staff. All staff is fully trained with all statutory training with in-depth dementia training, many holding N.V.Q. Level II certificates. Staff are highly motivated and consistently go the extra mile in assisting the residents to live life to the full potential.

Staff make every effort to provide person-centred support and care. The manager and deputy are always approachable and listen to any concerns whilst making every effort to address any concerns effectively. At times my relative can be very difficult and the staff and manager manage his behaviour with
humour, understanding and kindness. Nothing is too much trouble and staff are always welcoming.

My dad was in hospital. They decided that he needed to go into a home for assessment and Laleham, Herne Bay was the only place with a room available. No no noooo, don't put your loved ones here. The staff were friendly enough but not enough of them. Some we're foreign and couldn't understand what you
were saying, the whole place stunk of urine and felt grubby. It's so dated and the lift was awful. You could only get 2 people in there at a time and was about 100 years old. My poor dad ended staying in his room all day and night. They would bring up his breakfast and that would still be there lunch time no one came into take plates away. Me and other family members would have to ask someone to take them. He had a sink in his room but no hot water. My dad went downhill in there. We couldn't wait to get him out of the place. He eventually got home but sadly died 9 days later.

My family and I have had to put our beloved husband and father into the care of others, so finding this home has put us all at ease. The management and staff are professional, hard working and caring people who create a family atmosphere that is welcoming and friendly to all with every possible attempt
at empathy. This is a very conviviate place for him to live, so spirits are always lifted when we come to visit. Thank you

I find the carers, nurses and management very friendly and attend to my husbands needs e.g when he needs to go to the toilet very promptly, they are happy, smiling and helpful to take him off when this is needed. They also help him at meal times to eat, as due to his dementia he has forgotten how to
manage to eat and drink, how to hold things with food and using cutlery.

The manager and her lovely team have looked after and cared for my partner for 18 months. Their patience, empathy and understanding have been extraordinary and provided him with a secure and homely environment. This is especially appreciated as he can be difficult and unpredictable at times. With their
positive attitude and approach, nothing seems to be a problem. It's a wonderful place.

I've visited my friend several times during his stay. We've sat in the dining room or lounge or I have taken my friend out (walking distance). We've been offered a cup of tea every time. The staff were always pleasant when I saw them. They are happy for me to take my friend out too.

Unfortunately, I was unable to visit my husband on many occasions. However, when I did I found the staff to be very courteous and polite. His room was extremely small and not very clean looking and in need of decoration, as was the rest of the home which I saw. There seemed to be no facilities for the
residents and considering the home is situated across from the pier, at no time was my husband taken out for some fresh air. The care home is looking very grey!

All staff are fantastic and even though care staff usually have to work 12 hour shifts and are often short staffed, the standard of care is high. They are really helpful, friendly and person centred. Housekeeping staff are also very good and my room is thoroughly cleaned daily. The food is excellent.
Kitchen staff are very good if you are on a diet and made me beautiful and imaginative salads. Management also very nice and approachable. The few criticisms I have are the responsibility of the owner. In the dining room and lounge there is no way of attracting a carer's attention if there is an emergency. There's a call bell on the wall but residents either can't access it or the ones who can wouldn't understand how to. The access to the garden is a health and safety hazard for both residents and staff.

Even though my dad has passed 8 months now, I still have this unsettled feeling a lack of care contributed to him passing. I was told he was liked by many, which I'm sure he was. He was chatty, liked sharing his jokes, and being around company. Unfortunately, he was there 2 months and contracted a chest
infection, deteriorated within days gone, left us. The lack of care I discovered the night before he died was heartbreaking.

I visited my Great Aunt here after hearing she had been placed on end of life care. The exterior and interior were in poor condition and upon entering into the lobby, we were immediately hit with the stench of urine.
My bed-bound Aunt was on the 4th floor. Her bed was behind the door and so she was
not visible to staff. There was a friendly cleaner in her room who answered questions, but she loudly asked my Aunt if she recognised us - she did not suffer with any memory issues; her illness was physical, so this was not appropriate.
The buzzer to call for help was out of my Aunt's reach; she couldn't move well enough to reach it. No staff checked in on her during the 45-60 minute visit, aside from the cleaner; I saw no evidence of care, end of life or otherwise.
She had a glass to drink from which she couldn't lift, and had only 4 stained straws to drink from which were tucked behind the TV.
She wasn't eating because she found the food terrible.
The home is not fit for purpose.

Originally gave a review stating that I was not satisfied with the manner in which communication between relatives and the staff at the home did or did not take place. However, these issues have now been fully resolved and addressed and there was a complete misunderstanding of what was going on and
more than satisfactory explanation has been given. My wife and I are now more than satisfied that the issues have been fully resolved and now on this basis we can fully recommend without reservation the quality of care and communication from the management and staff at the Laleham. We are more than satisfied that this home operates to the highest of standards.

My mother is a resident in the retirement home. The home has done extremely well they have enabled us to visit my mother in her room where they have seated her in a comfortable chair where we can sit beside her. Mum has extremely poor sight and hearing so being in a quiet controlled area we are all
able to spend time together and communicate with each other. Mum is now 104 and is unable to hear my voice.. My wife is able to place an ice-cream cornet in mums had and touch her lips with it and mum eats it on her own. The staff at the home enable us to enjoy our visits with Mum. It makes a difference.
