Situated in a pretty leafy avenue on the outskirts of Maidstone, Lulworth House provides residential care for up to 38 people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The 1920s Home retains a lot of character, while providing modern facilities to suit the needs of residents. The friendly staff are dedicated to creating a ‘home from home’ feel and helping residents live as independently as possible.

The Home offers single and companion rooms, some with ensuite facilities. The Home has two lounges, a spacious dining room, bright conservatory and an on-site hair salon. Their secure garden features a pleasant terrace area and is home to ‘La Piazza’, their very own tearoom.

Residents enjoy a variety of events including games, quizzes, sing-a-longs, cream tea dances, summer parties and BBQs; As well as regular film nights and monthly entertainment evenings with professional performers.

One of the first care providers to champion the importance of nutrition for the elderly and those with Dementia, Nellsar employ a Nutrition & Wellness Manager for their Homes. Lulworth House acknowledges that nutrition and hydration are an integral part of good health and well-being, delivering well-balanced, nutritious meals and snacks to residents every day.

Lulworth House also benefits from a Well-Being Team of fully-qualified holistic therapists who use nurturing touch, complementary therapies and relaxing treatments to improve residents’ quality of life and sense of well-being.

Employing high-tech care planning technology, care staff use the ®Nourish system, spending less time on paperwork and more time caring for their residents.

Lulworth House also use bespoke dementia care technology ‘interactiveMe’ as a way of further personalising their residents’ care, and as a tool for connecting individuals with their family and care staff around them. This personalised-online profile offers a wonderful tool for reminiscence too.

Very happy with the care Mum receives. The staff are amazing and look after all of Mum's needs. She is very happy here. Her room is always spotless and she always looks clean and she smiles a lot. The staff are friendly and talk to the residents with respect.

Lulworth House and its staff are amazing. If I needed to go into a home, I would pick this one. The care my mother gets is 100% so I am able to come and go anytime to see her, which is great.

Our mum was staying here between March of 2021 and has only passed away recently. In the years that Mum was here, she was looked after very well by all the team who work here. We were always kept up to date with how Mum's health was.
During her time here she was included in activities and days out
from time to time. The home has various afternoon activities, for example, afternoon teas and barbecues during the summer which involved the families.
The home is very clean and well-maintained.
When it got close to our mum's end of life they showed a lot of compassion towards myself and my sisters and you could see the love and care they gave her. Over the years that Mum was here, she was very comfortable and very well looked after which gave all the family peace of mind.

Mum was a resident at Lulworth House for the last 3.5 years of her life, during which she was happy, safe and well cared for.
The care home is a large, clean home with a garden, and is run by some lovely friendly staff who are very professional and approachable. They always keep you informed of any
issues, but they also like to have feedback, one way being with their 'Resident of the Month' phone calls.
There are activities to join in with; Mum especially liked the baking and also the singing with the local entertainer, plus occasional trips out and themed events.
All in all a good care home, and to the staff I'd like to say thank you.

Our mum became a resident in March 2021, which as we all know was COVID. The care and support was second to none and continued throughout her stay. I cannot fault anything about the home. Being a carer myself I was dreading my mum having to go into a care home. My mum has struggled to settle and I'm not sure she will ever accept being in a home but the staff are all brilliant with her, giving lots of reassurance. Everyone is very friendly and the
residents all look well looked after and content. Always a nice atmosphere in the home on all my visits. The staff have been very supportive and attentive.
As a critical carer, I'm so thankful my mum is in this home.

Mum has been at Lulworth House since the summer of 2023. At first, she went in for respite care but settled in so well that she is now a permanent resident. We picked Lulworth, as from the first conversation through to Mum's arrival, the team were kind and thoughtful to her needs, and she loved the
room that she was staying in. I am always made to feel welcome by the team when I visit. I can come and go as I wish, and Mum always seems to be happy and involved in an activity. Not only has she settled in, but is thriving with the additional stimulus. Mum has always loved cooking and home-cooked food which was part of our decision to pick Lulworth. She really enjoys the food and also the cooking activities. It's nice to join her for some of these activities, quizzes etc, so we can spend quality time together. I feel that she is well cared for, safe and happy. Thank you all for the care you have given her so far.

The home is always clean and never smells. My mother is always clean and tidy. The staff are all lovely and keep me informed if my mother is ill. They have lots of activities for the residents. My mum says that the food is nice.

Mum has been in the Lulworth since November 2022. The care and compassion we have seen from all of the staff in the last 14 months has been nothing less than stellar.

My mother-in-law has been a resident in Lulworth House for 2 years, following a stroke which left her unable to stay in her own home. The care she has received at Lulworth is outstanding. It is a medium-sized home, with a real family atmosphere. All the carers have been kindness itself, and have shown
Mum genuine affection, treating her with dignity and compassion. My wife and I have forged a close relationship with all the care staff. The leadership is strong, and there is an atmosphere of calm throughout the home. In two years we have found nothing of concern, or cause for complaint, and Mum has been happy here. Several relatives of other patients have said much the same in conversations we have had with them.

There is truly a family atmosphere at Lulworth. Families are involved in all aspects of their loved one care. All staff are friendly and treat the residents as part of their family. All residents are treated as individuals and staff take the time to really get to know their likes and dislikes. Good
nutrition is a key part of what Lulworth offers along with regular events to which families are invited. There are regular trips out for residents.
There are also regular family meetings for feedback, with key speakers to give helpful information to understand dementia and related emotional support to families. The manager of Lulworth is down-to-earth, friendly and helpful and always thinks ahead in her drive to remain a first-class care home.
My father will be 102 years old this year. He is happy and contented because of the high standards of care that Lulworth provides. Healthcare is also first class with a doctor on call.

Since August when my mother was welcomed into Lulworth House she has consistently received the best of care. She has been shown such kindness and particular thoughtfulness in support of her strong faith. When visiting she always expresses her appreciation of the care given. Mum has experienced a number
of health issues for which prompted medical advice has been sought and her condition monitored. I have appreciated regular updates too. My family and I are grateful for the sensitive care mum is receiving and feel reassured that she is in the right place.

Wonderful carers and staff - always helpful.
Very good activities and entertainment.
Pity rooms are not ensuite (commodes are hated!)
Very difficult building as a starting point so less than ideal as a care home.
Everyone does their best with it.

With regards to the rooms, with the home being a conversion, we are limited by building regulations and the plumbing system as to how many en-suites we can install, although there are some rooms at the home that do have en-suite facilities, maybe you could talk to the Manager and ask her to consider a change for your family member when one becomes available. The activities team do amazing things with the residents and I know they work hard to try and plan a varied activities and events calendar - the residents always seem to be having so much fun! Lulworth House is a home in which my wife is looked after by caring staff whose prime concern is the welfare, safety, and happiness of the residents.
A programme of activities is in operation in which residents are given every encouragement to take part.

This review covers my experience through the lockdown and it's difficult to comment on the cleanliness and food as I have not been inside the home. The management and staff have been amazing during this difficult time. Keeping the days interesting for residents with activities and stimulation. The safety
and care of residents and staff have been of a very high standard and they couldn't have done more. I've been kept regularly updated and had weekly zoom meeting with my mum.

"Hello, my name is Catherine Singh and I am the Registered Manager of Lulworth House Residential Care Home. Situated on the outskirts of Maidstone, Lulworth House offers bright and spacious accommodation and has 38 single rooms, six of which have en-suite facilities.


I took up my position as Manager in December 2017 and have worked with my staff team to ensure that there is a strong family-orientated atmosphere and residents are made to feel at home. Person-centred care is central to the Lulworth House philosophy – ensuring that the needs of our residents are met is of utmost importance to us.


We run regular residents’ meetings, which give us the opportunity to receive feedback from our residents about the care they receive within our Home and any new suggestions they may have for activities and trips. It also gives them the opportunity to express their thoughts and preferences.


We have a full and exciting in-house activity programme and we employ three Recreation & Well-Being Champions who provide both group sessions and one-to-one activities for each resident throughout the week. They ensure that sessions are relevant and tailored to each individual.


Each week we have a variety of organised activities including exercise classes, musical sessions and arts and crafts, and we have regular events and entertainments to which all relatives are invited.  We also have a sensory room, a monthly cinema club and a regular ‘pub afternoon’ for all residents. Our Well-Being Team are on hand to deliver one-to-one relaxation sessions, including massage or aromatherapy, which greatly improve the holistic health of our residents.


Lulworth House has its own minibus and we offer regular trips both locally and further afield, with residents choosing the places they would like to visit – often remembering their own past cherished experiences and re-visiting places they would like to see again.


We have a coffee shop for residents and relatives, where they can enjoy a coffee and cake, and this has proved very popular, especially during the warm summer months. We have also re-designed our garden, introducing raised beds to encourage residents who enjoy gardening to get involved in the planting and growing of flowers, vegetables and fruit.


We run a rigorous staff training programme to guarantee the high standards of care within our Home and ensure we are able to provide dignity in care. We also provide weekly one-to-one key worker sessions which help to build the relationships, trust and confidence between staff and residents. We place great emphasis on getting to know our residents and having a good understanding of their background and life history, as this enables us to personalise our approach for each individual.


Lulworth House also places great importance on the input and involvement of relatives and we hold regular relatives’ support meetings to provide much-needed support and contact with other relatives. Lulworth operates an open-door policy for all relatives and we always welcome and value the input in their loved one’s care."

Job Title: Nourishment and Social Wellness Coordinator

"I first started working at Lulworth House in 2005. I have done a bit of everything; I started as a Carer, then worked up to a Senior Carer position. I moved into the Activities team after having my first child, then stepped up to work as the Chef for a while. I also reverted back to a Caring or Senior role in between each job change. I have also worked some stand-in shifts throughout my time here, to cover those in the Laundry and Kitchen as needed. The best part about the team at Lulworth is that we are like a family; we are all loved and appreciated. Everyone is their own individual person and people are helped to grow and develop themselves in ways which support them as an individual.


Having had my second child, we found that the shift pattern of a Caring or Senior role was not working for us as a family and I developed into the new role of Nourishment and Social Wellness Coordinator which I have been for a few years now and enjoy it so much! I love running our baking club, I work out their MUST scores and refer our residents to the dietician team or SALT team as needed and deal with them for each review. I wrote the menus using the likes and dislikes of our residents and I keep their nutrition care plans up-to-date by reviewing them each month and adding any changes. I also enjoy support the Care team during mealtimes by serving the residents their meals in the dining room, which we strive to keep as enjoyable and person centred as possible. Supporting their choices and likes and dislikes where possible.
 
The training I have received over the years is extensive. I have completed all of the mandatory trainings within each role, and I have also worked through my NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Care. I have, in the past, been the in-house Moving and Handling trainer. I am currently the in-house Infection Control Trainer and hope to complete the next Food Hygiene Train the Trainer course soon, which was cancelled at the beginning of the Covid outbreak. I also have been on many trainings with Leni Wood (Nutrition and Wellness Manager) which are more about the food side of my role, including becoming Hydration Champion and enjoying taking part in the Nellsar Chef Masterclasses on Zoom which were put together during this year. 
 
The part I enjoy most about my Nourishment and Social Wellness role is that the residents at Lulworth see me differently to the Carers and a lot of them recognise that my job is based not only around food but also time. We are able to enjoy chatting during mealtimes and I can ask them how they slept or if they enjoyed the options available. It is a much more holistic approach to serving their meals and they appreciate that I am always available for them to give them something they desire and get it ordered in if it something we don't usually store. 
 
Lulworth has changed a lot in the years I have been working there; there has been multiple changes in management who all have put their own mark on the Home. Our Home Manager Catherine Singh is a brilliant manager and she has brought such a lovely environment into Lulworth during her years with us. She is very supportive of both the residents and the staff and willing to work to people's strengths. Catherine has made the Home beautiful; the back garden outside the dining room has been made resident-friendly and flat, and the decking was changed to a nice area with astro turf and raised flower beds. It has given the residents such a lovely place to enjoy outdoor activities and parties in the warmer months.


With my job role, a big improvement is that the external professionals (like the Dietician Team and the SALT Team) are supportive and so happy with the care we give and how we follow instruction. The Dietician Team in particular always mention how good it is to have one point of contact within the Home rather than speaking to a different person each time they ring. They often mention that they are confident that the care we give is to a high standard.


I am very proud to have completed all my training over the years; I have always felt really supported by the team around me. I am improving my cake decorating skills, baking and also my piping techniques through running a regular baking club with the residents, which is great fun. In the future, I look forward to gaining more knowledge that will help me improve the foods and menu's offered to the residents."
