Old Station House is a beautiful home offering exceptional residential and early-stage dementia care in the heart of the bustling town of Abingdon. The specialist environment has been designed specifically to enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia, and incorporates a number of features to promote reminiscence as therapy.

Whether you are looking to relax on the roof-top sun-terrace, in one of the themed areas or join in with the wide range of activities taking place on a daily basis, the home hopes that there is everything you need to help to continue a fulfilling and independent lifestyle.

Staff also believe that residents should enjoy life in an atmosphere of warmth and understanding. Residents are cared for by people who appreciate their need for privacy and who will respect their dignity and freedom of choice.

At Old Station House they offer compassionate, individualised residential and dementia care for up to 43 residents in modern and comfortable apartments.

They believe their professional expert care team are the best people to provide the personal care you need, and understand how important it is to have daily activities to take part in and enjoy.

The dedicated Activities Co-ordinator organises a wide programme of events around each person's requests, hobbies and interests. They will be delighted to assist you to continue with existing hobbies, as well as give you the opportunity to try something new if you would like to.

The home makes sure everyone can enjoy themselves to the fullest, be that with arts and crafts, a coffee morning or more individual pursuits. Visits from outside entertainers happen regularly and the residents regularly take trips out and about in the local area.

Each resident receives one-to-one time with the Activity Co-ordinator and together they will work on their own personal activity plan and goals.

    They can accompany loved ones to private appointments,
    however the fee attached to this is £21 per hour. Where private taxi
    services are used for transportation to appointments the cost should
    be paid for by yourself.

This is an excellent care home. The management and staff are efficient and sympathetic to the needs of residents and their family and friends.
The front line carers are superb and nothing is too much trouble for them. These are people with difficult jobs but go about their work with smiles and laughter.
There
are activities almost every day carried out with enthusiasm and a sense of fun. Sometimes the coordinator organises trips outside of the home which is really appreciated by the residents, particularly those confined to wheelchairs.
The location is superb, right in the middle of Abingdon with the town, river and parks close by.
The rooms are spacious and airy and there is an en-suite toilet and shower and a kitchen with a fridge and ample space and facilities to prepare meals when corvid allows.
My wife has been a resident for 6 months and received really good care and I couldn't ask for more.
Old Station House is a care home that cares.

My Mum moved into Old Station House in September 2020 during the pandemic, which has shaped her experience there. Of course, staff are friendly in the main, though staff levels have dipped. Food is okay, has taken a while for carers and cooks to understand what she can and cannot eat (or chew!). Activities
are good and activities coordinator is enthusiastic. Overall okay. Good sized rooms, bigger than a nearby care home which is otherwise better. We shall stick with Old Station House due to bigger rooms!

Just a quick update review about the care my mother in law receives from the amazing, dedicated team at Old Station House. She has advanced dementia but is always settled and calm when we visit to take her out or sit in the special, comfy covid room with her. As her dedicated carer I am also allowed
to visit her in her bedroom, which is reassuring for me and relaxing for her.
The home is scrupulously clean and feels very safe but the main heart of the community is the staff. They genuinely care for the residents and can always tell me how Mum is when I ring, as if she were the only one of their patients - not one of the many they so carefully care for. The ethos of the place is one of humour and love, led by the brilliant management team. Thank you so much for taking the worry and strain from my husband and I over the last four and a half years.

The staff are very caring and the activities organised are second to none. The atrium is a lovely space to get people together. It is light airy and such a good size and all have an ensuite bathroom which make them feel like your own flat rather than a room.

Since entering Old Station House in July, Mum has adjusted to a new style of living well due to the attention of the staff. The care manager is extremely efficient and helpful. Unfortunately, she is not getting the full experience of Old Station House due to Covid. The Activities Coordinator is a very
personable and efficient staff member.

The care my mother receives is excellent. The staff are patient and caring and the home keeps them entertained and included in things. We are very happy with all aspects and my mother joins in and mixes in more now than she has in the last 10 years.

Care and support received is second to none. The staff were like family to my brother throughout his time there, and nothing was too much trouble. Morale is high which cannot have been easy at these difficult covid times. A cheerful and friendly atmosphere is obvious at all times.

The standard of care could be improved. Rooms and corridors are not always as clean as they should be. Not an easy job with so much movement going on. The degree of personal care my wife receives is generally good but some areas are poor. She has two hearing aids, without which she is almost totally
deaf. One was lost a few days ago, and today the other did not have any battery in. Not very good as she then lives in a world without communication. All this was reported this morning, at which point no action at all had been taken, although the loss of one aid was reported some days ago. There are good efforts at activities, but it is a pity there are none at weekends, though.

My mother lived at Old Station House for over eight years. The care she received throughout that time was excellent. The staff respected her choices and treated her as an individual. They respond promptly to any concerns they had about her well-being and always kept us informed. They have been consistently
caring and always treated her with dignity. We have always felt welcome to visit her at any time. I would highly recommend Old Station House.

My mother was a resident but died in 2016. I have remained in contact with the home as a volunteer. The home is a caring, supportive environment with an excellent activity programme. It is a bright, airy building and resident rooms are very comfortable and homely.

Dad arrived in October 2018 and from day one he was very happy. He enjoys the food, activities and going out on trips to museums and ten-pin bowling, etc.
The activities guy is fantastic with the residents, lots of stimulating activities and he really cares about the residents.
All the staff are friendly
too. It is a huge relief for us as a family that he enjoys it here.

Sharon

Sharon Tatum

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2019

Sharon has worked in several care homes within Oxfordshire over the last 30 years. Sharon started as a Care Assistant and progressed up the ladder to Head of Care. Sharon had a 7-year secondment to Wallingford Day Centre as Manager, then transferred back to OSJCT. Sharon was then transferred to Old Station House in 2003 as Head of Care and was promoted to Home Manager in June 2019.


Sharon has a City and Guilds Award in Family and Community Care, NVQ Level 2 in care, Level 3 in Health & Social Care, Registered Managers Award, Level 3 in Dementia Care & End of Life Care.


Sharon says “ I love my job, each day brings a new challenge, I like to encourage residents to live their lives to the fullest. I encourage a family atmosphere at Old Station House to include residents, staff, family members, friends and the community.”


Sharon enjoys relaxing with her family and reading. Sharon also helps out with her sister's Boarding Cattery.


Gertrude

Gertrude Mutamba

Job Title: Care Leader

Joined: 2010

Gertrude Mutamba is a Care Leader with passion and caring dedication at Old Station House. She has over 20 years of experience in the care industry. She joined the Trust in 2010 having previously worked with style acers for special needs. Gertrude has a QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care, and she is also a moving and handling mentor trainer for the home. Gertrude says, “I like to find the fun in the day and bring the bright and cheerful smile to the home.” In Gertrude’s spare time she enjoys spending time at her church or with her family. She also loves spending time baking and smelling out the office with her garlic drinks.


Donna

Donna Cooper

Job Title: Care Leader

Joined: 2002

Donna is a Care Leader at Old Station House, and she has worked at Old Station House since 2002. She has previous experience within various care settings, with a Nursing agency, and prior to that several years of experience with adults with learning difficulties and other physical and mental health challenges within the private care sector. She joined Old Station House as a Carer and worked her way to Care Leader. Donna has NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Direct Care, and she is a manual handling trainer and mentor. She has also completed her Diploma in Medication Management, End of Life Care, and Equality and Diversity. Donna says, "I enjoy my job, caring for the residents and supporting the staff, enabling them to provide a high standard of care to all. Every day is different and presents new challenges. I am proud of our team at OSH, who provide excellent person-centred care to our residents, helping them to live a fulfilled daily life." Donna enjoys spending time at home with her family and friends, live music events, swimming, walking, kayaking and body boarding.


Jeffrey

Jeffrey Denton

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

Joined: 2008

Activities form a core part of the care plan for residents at Old Station House who are regularly are treated to outings and events under the care of Activities Coordinator, Jeffrey Denton. Jeffrey has been with the Trust for 10 years, and strives to come up with fresh and new ideas to keep residents on their toes and excited about life.


Jeffrey loves his job, and says no day is the same as the one before. He is popular with both residents and volunteers, and says he tries to stay positive, eventful and cheerful.


Jeffrey has a NVQ Level 2 in Care and Activities.


In his spare time, Jeffrey entertains with comedy, singing and playing music, and keeps fit with football, squash and badminton.


Rachel

Rachel Green

Job Title: Administration Assistant

Rachel is an Administrative Assistant, she has 12 year’s experience in administration. She was a PA for 6 years then an administrator for 4 years.
Rachel says, “Old Station House is a lovely place to work, there is a great atmosphere here, the staff are very welcoming, cheerful & helpful. Everyone is always willing to help one another and we work well as a team. Residents and staff all feel like extended family to me, I like interacting with the residents and their family and do what I can to help”.


In her spare time Rachel like to walk her dog, spend time with her children and family and going to live music events.


Louise

Louise Allen

Job Title: Head of Care

Joined: 2007

Louise has worked in the care for 17 years. She started off as a care assistant and has worked her way to up Head of Care. Louise has worked in various care settings within Oxfordshire, while doing this has achieved NVQ Level 4 in Leadership and management in care and is currently working towards her Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management. Louise says “ I am very passionate about Adult care and ensuring all my residents have a fulfilled and happy life”


Outside of Old Station House Louise enjoys gardening, cooking and walking her Beagle dog, Rufus and exploring the English countryside.
