My mum was in Howards care home. Everybody was so helpful, very friendly. Every time I asked my mum about the carers she said they're very nice. Mum was so happy in the care home.

I visited Howards for their annual Christmas party for the residents. As usual I was warmly welcomed and was shown into the main reception room to sit with my friend. There were other residents and friends there and the atmosphere was very happy. We were both given a mince pie and a cup of tea while
Christmas songs were played.

Both my parents became residents at Howards this year. I am very happy with the care my parents are receiving. They are well looked after and safe and tells me it is like being part of a family. The staff and management team are excellent, friendly and caring. The food at the home is good, and the beds
are comfortable. There is a lovely garden for residents to sit in. As a relative, I receive good communication from the home and the management team updates me regarding GP visits/changes in medication. The staff went above and beyond at the summer garden party and residents/relatives had a fabulous time. I would definitely recommend Howards Residential Home.

From 2020 5to 2024 Mum was very well cared for.
The staff were very caring and friendly. I was always contacted to be kept up to date when Mum needed to see her GP. She was always clean in her room and bedding was too.

My mother has been in Howards residential home since the beginning of June. I have found the staff to be very kind and tolerant of their patients and looked after my mother very well indeed. The food is well-cooked, and the rooms are clean and tidy. The home and the people who work there are a tribute
to what living in a care home should be like.

I cannot praise the staff at Howards highly enough. The care they have provided to my mother in the last three years has been consistently excellent. There is a such a friendly homely atmosphere and the overall impression is one of a big happy family. Mum was treated with compassion and dignity all
the time, and she felt really cared for. I have no hesitation is recommending Howards Residential Home to anybody.

My mum became a resident at Howards a few weeks ago after a long spell in hospital. She originally came just for respite, but she has decided that she would like to stay permanently. From day one, Mum has been made very welcome and has made lots of new friends. When we visit Mum, the staff are all very
welcoming and very polite and respectful, and refreshments are always offered on our arrival. The manager and her wonderful staff go above and beyond in their jobs, and my mum has told me herself that she wants for absolutely nothing. This has given myself and my family great peace of mind. All we ever wanted was for our mum/nanny to be treated with respect, dignity and compassion, and I can honestly say that these wishes are respected. It also gives us peace of mind that Covid restrictions are in place. I cannot praise the manager and her staff enough for the warm welcome and high level of care that they are giving my mum. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all so very much.

Sadly my mother had a very short time in the home, and her health rapidly declined. From the very first visit to the home, we knew Howards was the right place for Mum. Throughout her stay, all of the team demonstrated huge compassion, care and kindness to Mum. They were totally professional and on top
of her changing needs as well as always making our family welcome and giving us support. We could not have wished for more.

Reply from Niki Crossley, Manager at Howards

It is a very sad time for staff and other residents of the home to lose someone, we are extremely grateful that we can offer this service and give families peace of mind.

An elderly neighbour moved into Howards a few years ago when she was unable to cope with looking after herself and her house. I visit her fairly regularly and have always found the staff very friendly and caring.
To the best of my knowledge, they have looked after my friend very well, taking her to
hospital visits, hairdressers and local outings for tea. There is always a warm and friendly welcome when I visit.

My friend returned to the care home from the hospital over 12 months ago looking very frail and ill but with good nursing care, she soon returned to much better health. She has lived at Howards for approximately five years and is in her 90's.

My mother-in-law was a very frail 98-year-old when she finally agreed to move to Howards. The care she has had since becoming a resident means she looks like a new woman. Her weight has increased due to the fantastic meals and goodies she is served. She loves her shopping trips and her coffee mornings
at the local church with the most loving and caring staff. My husband and I are extremely happy with Howards and the turn around they have achieved with now a very happy and healthy looking mother and mother-in-law.

My experience of Howards is over the past 3 years.
All the staff are caring and respectful to each resident treating them as part of a large family.
The food is excellent.
The activities are good for those who can participate with care and thought to those who cannot fully join in.
Able residents
are taken out for trips I.e. Theatre/coast.
Different groups come in playing music encouraging singing.
On occasions the Salvation Army visit.
I am aware that the "end of life care" is first class with joint medical teams, staff and relatives all there if it's the family's wish for their loved one not to die in hospital.

Sadly my mother only spent the last four months of her life at Howards. I had been reluctant to move her but financially it was necessary. She blossomed at Howards, we were able to reconnect with her in a way that we had been unable to in ten years. Howards brought out the best in her, she was happy
again and able to interact. Despite Mum's advanced dementia, the care and patience she was shown was extraordinary. I can never begin to thank the management and all the staff enough for their input. I could not begin to recommend Howards too highly, people and care are paramount and the way Mum was looked after was exemplary. It felt like home from home, she had a lovely room overlooking the garden which gave her so much pleasure and spent the summer days sitting out in the sunshine. All the food was home and freshly cooked, the entertainment and activities were great and there were no hidden extras. The communication was first class, we always got to see and talk to the same members of staff, continuity was second to none, especially towards the end. I cannot sing Howards' praises too highly.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.182)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.182) out of 10 for Howards is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.582 for Howards is calculated as follows: ( (41 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 67 Ratings = 4.582

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.6 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Howards is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 21 registered maximum number of service users is 4.2, which has been reached with 6 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
