Situated in the quiet village of Wormley and overlooking acres of natural beauty, Surrey Heights is a privately owned care home that offers residential care for 39 older people living with dementia.

Located next to the famous King Edward's school, Surrey Heights is a large, detached 19th-century Victorian building set in acres of mature south-facing grounds. It was also the former country house of famed novelist and poet, George Eliot, and retains its original blue plaque. Its original features include a blue wedgewood ceiling in the main lounge, and a billiards room with distinctive wall panelling.

Care is always delivered with respect, dignity and kindness, and is primarily focused on specialist dementia care (organic and induced). Secondary focus is on respite, residential dementia and nursing care.

Acquired by CHD Living in 1989, the home is one of a number of others run by the group in picturesque Surrey. Surrey Heights provides high-quality service in a friendly environment, so that all residents can live their lives, their way.

Residents at Surrey Heights enjoy a range of individually tailored activities and outings, and have a choice of spaces in which to relax - including comfortable lounges, a library and conservatory. Residents can enjoy a pamper, too, with access to the on-site hairdressing and nail salon.

With a choice of comfortable, single rooms and easy access to the internet, residents can enjoy a private, cosy space in which to connect with loved ones.

To support and enhance the dementia care provided, planning is currently in place to modernise and develop a dementia care village.

Above all, the skilled, dedicated carers at Surrey Heights are passionate about providing high-quality, person-centred care in a friendly environment.

My thanks go to all the staff members at Surrey Heights for their friendly, attentive and helpful style that has enabled my wife to settle into the home quickly. In their challenging work environment, the staff cope well and safely with the various and unique needs of the residents and I'm delighted
to say that the regular activities help to create a pleasant and happy atmosphere.

My father has spent about 18 months at Surrey Heights. It was such a hard decision to make, given that as a family we wished to care for him ourselves at home but the reality is that we were not able to. I cannot speak or rate the staff at Surrey Heights highly enough. This is like a second home for
us and my father is in the best possible care and hands. The team care for the residents like they are family and really understand their needs, they focus on supporting independence as much as they can for the benefit of those they care for and for as long as they can. The activities are great, a particular staff member gets everyone involved with much patience and perseverance. The highest possible care happens here but more importantly, it's the real care and attention they give to each and every resident. As a family, we are welcome to come to the home any time of day and night and feel very lucky to have this group of wonderful people in my father's life.

Reply from Rebecca Connolly, Regional Manager at Surrey Heights

Thank you so much for such a lovely review and we will share this with the team. It is a pleasure looking after your father.

It can be very unsettling when you first entrust the care of your loved one to someone else. The team is amazing, friendly, warm and clearly has a tremendous rapport with the residents. Their commitment to providing the best possible care for such a diverse range of residents is truly wonderful.
A
big thank you to the manager and all the staff for keeping my husband safe, secure, happy and well-fed!

My wife spent two years in pleasant surroundings at Surrey Heights Care Home. During that time, as a frequent visitor, I regarded the love and care that she received from the staff to be unfailingly of the highest quality. From the manager down, the watchwords were always - what is the best for residents
and how do we achieve and maintain the very highest standard of care. Despite undergoing building works during that time, every effort was made to ensure that the day-to-day life, comfort and activities of residents were maintained. The very range of activities made available and the efforts made to encourage participation were astonishing. Many events including mock university, prize giving, sing-along, quizzes etc, etc, were available. I was impressed by the good standard of cleanliness and catering and that even wheelchair users were taken for walks in the fresh air. The care home has a very good relationship with the local surgery and health services and those in need are watched over carefully. I cannot praise the dedication of the staff too highly.

A marvellous team that not only cares for the residents wonderfully, they also think of us relatives. I'm always made to feel welcome and much effort goes into the occasional parties that are held so that we can celebrate special times of the year with our loved ones. The residents of course have many
other activities going on throughout the year, as it's important to keep them stimulated.
My Mum has been living at Surrey Heights for nearly 2 years, and I really feel that the good food and great care she receives have slowed the progression of her dementia. Thanks to you all.

Cleanliness seems to be an issue in the communal area. The strong smell of stale urine is difficult to confront. Meal times are efficiently administered. The staff are friendly and helpful. Friends and relatives of patients are welcomed.
Facilities are adequate; however, at present it is a building
site. I am certain it will be very good and sufficient for needs once the construction is complete.

This care home is one of the best that I have ever seen. The appointments are a great opportunity to re-connect with Mum and are very well managed. The staff as always, have managed this crisis extremely well, even though I am sure it has impacted on their own lives. Mum looks very well and is looked
after to a very high standard, and she speaks very highly of all the staff. She loves being there, which is a great relief to all the family. We are managing to see Mum every week which is vital during normal times, but even more now with Covid-19. Track and trace, social distancing and hand gels are in place and face coverings must be worn, temperatures are also taken so we feel comfortable spending time with Mum. Well done and many thanks to all the staff for making it possible to see Mum again.

My relative appears as happy and contented as anyone with dementia can. When he was assessed he had a Teddy Bear that he gave up his bed for, the manager asked the handyman to build the bear a bed so my relative could sleep in the bed as ted now has his own bed. This small act of thinking outside of
the box made all the difference to him. Thank you to the manager.

One of my mother's carers recently had a baby and a member of staff took my mother to visit them which she enjoyed so much. This is just one example of the length the staff will go to enhance the lives of those in their care. My mother has been there two years now and we couldn't be happier with the
level of care she has received.

Always feel very welcomed, my grandmother is happy to be there and staff take an interest in her and her needs and treat her as an individual. They make it easy for us to continue to get together as a family and include her. Allowing us to celebrate occasions with her such as her recent birthday and
bring along her great-grandchildren, something very important to us.

Very reassured and happy that my Dad is being looked after here as we do not live locally. He has been quite poorly of late and it is a comfort to know that not only are the staff in the home nursing him but also there is a very good rapport with the local GP and District Nurses who provide excellent
support. The staff at all levels are very friendly and caring and always welcoming when we arrive usually unannounced but they are never phased by that. It is a credit to the Manager and the team that they have worked together to significantly improve the CQC rating. It is a historic building so the adaptations may not make it quite as good as a modern purpose built home, but it is more like a home from home.

The manager, deputy, and staff at Surrey Heights are professional, respectful and caring towards the residents and their families. They are able to answer questions and provide support and advice. It gives us the greatest sense of comfort to know that Dad is in the safe hands of the Surrey Heights Team.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Surrey Heights.

Surrey Heights is always concerned with the residents quality of care and happiness. The staff always go above and beyond for the residents. The residents are always treated with dignity. The management are always available and approachable with any concerns/comments that we have.
Since the new management
team have been in place the care home has got better and better. The activities coordinator is fantastic, taking the residents on trips, arranging activities and always has a smile on her face no matter what. The facilities provided have also got better and the food is wonderful. The Chef is fantastic, always baking celebration cakes for the residents and the food provided for special events is amazing.
Recently the staff organised a Royal Wedding Street Party and it was absolutely amazing. Surrey Heights, thank you so much for looking after my Mum, one of the most precious people in my life. I know that she is safe and care for.

My mother in law joined Surrey Heights in December last year and within a few weeks, the change in her was apparent. She has thrived on the way she is treated by the staff (whom she describes as being "respectful"), on the friendly family atmosphere in the home (which she describes as being like "living
with friends") and on the activities, stimulation and delicious food provided every day.
Nothing is too much for the carers who treat all the residents with warmth, understanding and respect for each individual's needs. Whenever I visit, there is something interesting going on.... a range of activities, laughter, dancing, music and all residents are noticed, encouraged and made to feel special.
I had never imagined a care home could be like this and have been hugely impressed. It is wonderful to know how happy my mother in law is and to know that she is being cared for so well. Thank you to ALL the staff at Surrey Heights who make up such an impressive and caring team.

My mother arrived at Surrey Heights in November. Since she has been a resident, we have all noticed a marked improvement in her general well being and seemingly an improvement in her dementia.
My mum is happy, it has been a long while since we heard her laugh.
The staff are always friendly and helpful,
kind and respectful.
Whenever we visit mum, we are always welcomed with refreshments.
Mum particularly likes the fact that she can get up when she wishes and there is always a great choice of food on the menu.
We are confident that mum is in a safe and caring environment.

My mother has only been at Surrey Heights for a few weeks but I have been impressed with the care that she has received after being discharged from hospital and unable to return to her previous care home. The manager is positive, proactive and approachable and her staff are friendly and appear very
caring. I like the relaxed, homely atmosphere and have enjoyed seeing the residents stimulated and having fun with the activities provided for them. It is lovely to see the staff interacting with the residents and quite impressed at their cheerful disposition in often difficult situations. The menus and food look appetizing and I can personally vouch for the homemade cakes! My mother, who was quite under-weight, is now looking much healthier.

My Mum has only been in care for a short while and it took myself and my brother a while before finding a decent care home.
When we visited Surrey Heights we were pleasantly surprised. The surroundings, the people, everything about it just seemed
right. Now my Mum has been there a while she has put
weight back on and is much brighter than she was at home all alone.
I would certainly rate Surrey Heights above and beyond the other care homes we saw in the area. We feel we made the right choice for our Mum. The management and staff are just wonderful people.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.904)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.904) out of 10 for Surrey Heights is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.535 for Surrey Heights is calculated as follows: ( (46 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.535

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.369 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Surrey Heights is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.8 = 0.769

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
