Providing excellent personalised care for older people is the sole objective at Bernhard Baron Cottage Homes. For over 70 years they have been providing care to singles as well as couples in the cottages and the main building. The homes are a charity and while care is provided on an individualised basis they provide a strong community with activities and support for spiritual needs.

Experienced and dedicated staff value and encourage independence and try to provide for all individual needs, including care, diets and activities. The home has two members of staff with special responsibility for helping with personal interests, activities and frequent outings. They are assisted by a team of volunteers and have a minibus and a car at their disposal.

The cottages consist of a sitting room, a bedroom, a shower room, and a small kitchen. The main building has en-suite bedrooms in addition to lounges, dining room and facilities such as hairdressing and laundry. Several of the bed-sitting rooms are particularly suitable for couples.

Bernhard Baron Cottage Homes provide three-course lunches with choices for each course. Breakfast and tea are served in the dining room or in residents’ rooms and friends and family are welcome to join everyone for a meal. The kitchen staff can cater to residents' needs and preferences.

The homes are set in five acres beautiful grounds with a path winding through the gardens as well as wooded areas designed especially for wheelchairs and for those who need walking aids.

It is a real comfort knowing our mum is being so well cared for. All the staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. She has a lot of visitors, friends and family who are also made to feel very welcome so the transition from her own home to Bernhard Baron Care Home has been made so much easier.
Mum has already made several friends and joins in several of the activities as well as being on the residents' committee.

My mum has been a resident for six months. She initially found the transition from home to care quite difficult but the staff were fantastically supportive and patient. They have gone out of their way to ensure that everything specifically suits my mum and they continue to do everything possible to
ensure her well being. She has just thoroughly enjoyed her first Christmas at the home and is now looking forward to the continued care and activities in 2025.
From our perspective, we find that all the staff are extremely welcoming when we visit, and I really appreciate the way they keep me updated. As a family, we have been very impressed with the care - in fact another family member has also expressed an interest in joining the waiting list.

I have completed two years living at Bernhard Baron Care Home in a warm and comfortable cottage close to the main building, which contains the residential component of the home.
Bernhard Baron Care Home is distinguished by a caring philosophy embraced by all members of staff. It creates a warm, nurturing
and supportive environment that comes as close as humanly possible to the ideal of person-centred care.
Bernhard Baron Care Home has been owned by a charitable (non-profit-making) trust for almost eighty years. Trustees are visible and accessible to residents. The home's managers are vigilant but unobtrusive, decisive in emergencies, creating an environment of calmness and order that enables residents to flourish. Residents elect a committee that meets managers monthly to discuss the running of the home.
There are spacious and well-maintained grounds for elderly strollers. A stimulating programme of activities is available. The food is excellent with creative vegetarian alternatives to the changing daily menu.
I hope to spend the rest of my life here.

The care at Bernhard Baron is second to none. Everyone is so kind and caring. My mother is very happy there and she is amazingly well looked after.

My mother moved into Bernhard Baron Care Home in January 2024 and since that time the care she has received has been exemplary. Staff always have a smile and a cheerful greeting and nothing is ever too much trouble. If there is a medical concern, they always notify me - either by direct conversation
or by phone. Prescribed medication is always given at the correct time of day and a careful watch is kept if there are any health concerns.
Staff ensure that Mum's personal hygiene is good and she is encouraged to have frequent showers and washes. Her clothes are laundered frequently and her bed linen and towels are kept fresh at all times.
Mum reports that the food is generally excellent with plenty of choice at each meal. The entertainment laid on at Bernhard Baron is excellent and is designed to appeal to all tastes with regular trips out to parks, shops, the seafront and coffee shops.
As you step into this care home, you can feel its sense of community and spirit.

I am so happy with the home. The staff are all excellent and supportive to my mum, her relatives and friends. The care the residents receive is outstanding.

Bernhard Baron Care Home has been exceptional in so many ways. My father was given the best care. The staff work as a team and they treat residents as they would their own family. Every effort is made to allow residents to feel at home and at the centre of their care.
My father had a lovely room looking
onto the garden. The gardens are beautiful. We visited often and it was always welcoming and felt a happy and calm place. I have been to many care homes and this one feels different, more like a community where both staff and residents seem to know that it is a special place.
My father was listened to and respected at every stage. Towards the end of his life, the staff were just wonderful. He was given love and support and he was so reassured knowing that his choices would be respected. The care at Bernard Baron enabled my father to have the ending he had wished for, with family at his side. We are so thankful and can't recommend Bernard Baron highly enough!

There is a pervasive and reassuring sense of calm when you walk into Bernhard Baron Care Home.
The facilities are clean and well-appointed and residents have the freedom to make their accommodation their own space. The meals were a great joy for my mother, balanced, tasty and home-cooked and a good
time to socialise with others.
There is a stimulating and imaginative weekly programme of activities and social events, catering for a broad range of interests and making great use of their minibus for trips out.
The thoughtful, resident-focused attention to detail is reflected in the gardens too, which are beautifully and creatively laid out, with many varying seasonal highlights.
Mum received an exceptional level of care, with love, kindness and sensitivity at its core throughout her time there. The staff's frequent visits to her room were a great comfort and source of interest to her and time was made to find out how she really was. Their holistic support was extended to the family and was immensely appreciated by us all.

My mum is very happy with the care she receives in this home. The carers are kind and supportive of her needs and keep me well-informed should she have any falls or other problems.
I have always found the home to be warm, homely and comfortable. There are lots of activities, should she wish to join
in, and she enjoys walking around the grounds, weather permitting. She tells me the food is good and plentiful. I know that she is well cared for here, which gives me great peace of mind.

My experience of Bernhard Baron was only positive. A healthy, vibrant atmosphere pervades the home. Nourishing meals are provided, and the members of staff and carers are thoughtful and kind. Interesting outings are organised along with stimulating "in-home" activities. There are pretty gardens and
access to nearby shops.
All this helped make my mother-in-law's final year very contented and comfortable.

This care home is quite simply the best I have ever seen and I have visited more than a few through grandparents' friends and other relatives. The staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful, whether you are talking about carers or administrators. So many of the residents have smiles on their faces,
it must be good even when I'm not there. Mum, over 90 and frail after surviving a successful lung cancer operation, often says how fortunate she feels to be there. Even though her deafness can be frustrating, I've never seen any staff look irritated or act short with her. It is a great place!

Mum and I couldn't believe our luck when we were shown a Bernhard Baron Care Home cottage! She is so happy in her cosy new home whilst still enjoying a degree of independence but having care on hand. All the staff are so kind and helpful. I can now go on holiday knowing all Mum's needs, especially medically

My only negative is that when in isolation I have been advised that residents are given their meals in takeaway-type containers which aren’t easy to use to cut up food etc. and feel this isn’t very nice/dignified for them. If they request proper plates, cutlery etc. it has to be kept in their room,
which I totally understand, but does it have to be kept in their bathrooms? I don’t think this is very hygienic and feel there must be another way surely?
All of the staff are very friendly and caring and can never do enough, the cleanliness of the home is outstanding and it appears to be a very safe environment. I feel if the above points could be ironed out I would give a five-star review. It’s just the little things that count sometimes.

My cousin has resided at Bernhard Baron cottage homes for six years and during that time the overall care she has received has been excellent. The staff are professional yet friendly and approachable and attend to my cousin according to her individual needs. Although busy with their daily routines they
have time to be sociable with residents and visitors. My experience is of a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Initially, my cousin joined in many of the varied activities on offer for residents and there are also local trips to places of interest. Recently she has become more frail and less mobile. To help her still feel integrated it was suggested she move rooms to be nearer the main hall and dining facilities. This was a thoughtful and helpful move. My cousin values the Christian ethos of the care home and looks forward to the Sunday evening services led by local priests and a couple who are wonderful volunteers. We look forward to our visits with such a welcoming environment.

I came to Bernhard Baron Care Home with my husband in 2020 to live in one of the cottages. We have the best of both worlds - we have our privacy and independence with support when we need it and when we can no longer manage in the cottage, we will be able to move to the main building with more care
provided. We will stay in the same community where we already know everyone.
The care is first-class - nothing seems to be too much trouble and any worries are dealt with in a very kind and sympathetic way.
There are plenty of activities to suit everyone's taste and interest - outings, card games, other table games, a weekly ecumenical church service, craft, poetry, singing, exercises, gardening, bible studies, films, computer club, etc.
The food is excellent - well cooked and served with plenty of choice.
The trustees are Quakers which sets the tone for the whole ethos of the home which is outstanding.

Since my dad moved to Bernhard Baron Care Home he has changed so much. He has gone from a shy and anxious person to a happy and outgoing person in around 6 months. He talks very fondly of all the staff and constantly mentions how lucky he is to live there and how well cared for he is. As a relative,
it brings peace of mind to know that he is well cared for. We have been very impressed with the level of care, support and communication. We feel very lucky that our dad is living in such a wonderful place with amazing staff. We are always made to feel welcome every time we visit.
