Saxonwood care home's focus is on brighter living. They welcome people with open arms, like one big family, and strive to bring sunshine to residents every day. The home's prides itself on being one the most homely and friendly around.

Saxonwood has a seven-day-a-week sunny moments club. This is led by their dedicated activity co-ordinator who provides a variety of one to one and group activities. These are based on residents' hobbies and interests - there's something for everyone.

Each resident has an allocated key worker and the staff team receive regular training to make sure they provide the best care and support 24 hours a day.

Saxonwood has a 5* food hygiene certificate and the in-house catering team create delicious, nutritious home-cooked meals, reflecting residents preferences.

Engaging and involving residents is important and they regularly seek ideas, feedback and suggestions from residents and their families so the home can continuously improve its service.

Saxonwood has a warm, welcoming environment with a strong sense of community. The home is set in beautiful grounds, with it's own orchard, on the outskirts of historic Battle.

Saxonwood has a homely community of 33 residents and enjoys a country setting within easy walking distance of shops and the town centre.

All bedrooms are designed for individual occupation, with residents encouraged to bring their own furniture and personal belongings. Some have en suite facilities and others have a vanity unit incorporating a hand basin. All rooms have their own telephone and television points.

Saxonwood care home is run by Sussex Housing & Care which is a not for profit provider of housing and care for older people in Sussex. Any surplus they make is reinvested into improving the quality of life of their residents.

    All inclusive pricing - Our care fees include all accommodation and household bills, personal care, all meals, snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments, and the cleaning and laundry service. Extra services can be purchased as required, such as telephone, hairdressing and chiropody.


    We are a not for profit organisation which means any surplus we make in income is invested back into our properties to improve the quality of life of our residents. Sussex Housing & Care has been supporting older people to live brighter lives since 1946.

Dad is very well cared for. The staff are always kind, helpful and jolly. Dad says they are very pleasant. The staff are very responsive if there is an issue which needs attention. The food is excellent, good home cooking! Dad really enjoys his cooked breakfast at the weekend. The activities are fun,
creative and engaging, one mand in particular is excellent and all his activities are well attended. Lovely to have a visiting dog Angus as Dad loves dogs. Very sweet of the lady to take Dad to the 'chillout' room for a hand massage. Thank you.

My father had previously been proudly independent but now needs 24/7 care due to extreme old age. He tried it for a week but didn't want to go back home again. From the manager, admin, carers, kitchen staff, and cleaners through to maintenance, all are kind, sensitive, caring and always with a smile.
Guests are welcome at any time. The grounds are lovely, and the facilities are very pleasant and I have the peace of mind that my dad is safe, warm, well fed and getting the 24/7 professional teamwork care I would find impossible to provide on my own. A big, big thank you for taking a huge worry off my mind.

The staff work extremely hard, but always have a smile and are friendly, courteous and caring. They have been patient and kind during the difficult "settling in" time while my parents adjusted to leaving their home and moving into care. My parents especially enjoy the food at Saxonwood and the lovely
outdoor space too!

Found all of the staff to be so helpful. My partner has settled in so quickly and stress-free. It seems nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. I feel she is happy and content, which is very reassuring.

I didn't want to go into a care home, but my daughter found this one, and it's like a holiday home. I had been shut in my house for two years, dreading Covid-19, but here there are no worries about it! The helpers work hard all the time but sometimes can make a space for a chat. I had a new lease of
life coming here and did (with some help) a 500-word jigsaw, embroidering and knitting. There are activity groups every day and special meals for mothers, daughters and families etc.

Very friendly and helpful staff.
Good effort to organise activities, especially exercise sessions.
Food imaginative.
Pity supper has to be at 5 pm or 5.30 pm, but this is understandable for staff.
Would recommend.

Mum came to you after the death of my dad and after living in her home with Dad for 57 years. To begin with, it was quite a challenge for Mum; gradually, she is now joining in more, and her appetite has increased! I cannot praise the staff highly enough, knowing Mum is well cared for and safe.

Saxonwood is a wonderful, caring and happy home. My mum is settled and loves her life, full activities and fun with staff and other residents. The staff have been very supportive during the pandemic. If I was a judge, I would give Saxonwood a 10!

My mother came to live at Saxonwood in November 2020. Moving in during a pandemic was not easy, but the staff went out of their way to make the process as smooth as possible. We were greeted by happy, smiling faces - and this continues. All staff show an extremely caring and sensitive attitude, treating
everyone with dignity, and this includes managers too, who are very "hands-on"! They are all prepared to go "the extra mile". There is always an interesting activity to enjoy at everyone's own level. I have particularly appreciated the support given to my mother and myself. Staff always have time to talk or return a phone call and have kept me regularly updated between visits. It is so reassuring to know that my mother is safe and very well cared for. I would have no hesitation in recommending Saxonwood to anyone.

My mother has been in Saxonwood since October 2020. They were very helpful right from our first phone call to them. They emailed us a brochure which was very informative as we could not go into the building to view it due to COVID-19. The manager made a point of meeting us to look around outside. Mum
seems to be very happy here she joins in with many of the activities the staff arrange. She really enjoys their wonderful menu and is very well fed. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful.

My mother spent the last two years of her life at Saxonwood. She was always a very independent woman, enjoyed living on her own and her greatest fear as she got older was that she should have to move into a nursing home. After breaking each hip in two separate falls it became evident that Mum could
no longer live on her own and we visited a lot of care homes in the Battle area before deciding that Saxonwood was best-suited to her. Despite her fears, Mum settled into life in the care-home immediately and she felt safe, cared for and happy. I usually visited her twice a week and during that time I got to know a lot of the staff and also some of the residents. All the staff were really really good including catering staff, cleaners and care workers. They were always patient with Mum and were very professional and hard working. I was always amazed that they managed to do such a hard job whilst consistently maintaining a happy friendly atmosphere. I give the Saxonwood team an A*.

My wife over the past year, she came here on the 1st January 2019. She has been well looked after and cared for. All the staff are very caring and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them.

I have made many friends at Saxonwood and enjoyed my time over Christmas. I have been coming here each day over Christmas and the staff have done their best to give all a good time. The Christmas tree reached nearly to the ceiling in the dining room and was a picture with its lights on and decorations
around it. The tallest man in the room had to stand on a chair in order to reach the top of the tree to place the star. It was majestic.

I started working in care in 2010 and worked my way from Care Assistant, through senior care roles, Deputy Manager to finally becoming the Care Home Manager.


I am passionate about my work. I enjoy the variety of work and meeting new people and supporting them at times when they need help and reassurance. I absolutely love bringing energy and creativity to every activity and watching how residents’ faces light up.


Residents are at the very centre of our Saxonwood family. Everything I do is with their well-being and happiness in mind. Each member of our team is dedicated to giving the best care and making a positive difference in residents’ lives every day.

Job Title: Deputy Care Home Manager

Joined: 2014

I started at Saxonwood as a Care Assistant in 2014 and a year later, with the help of my team and manager, I became a Senior Care Assistant. I was in this role for five years. I've been able to up skill myself and with the support and training from Sussex Housing & Care, I've progressed to my Deputy Manager position.


Saxonwood is a brilliant home and we have lots of fun with the residents and I enjoy making a difference to their daily life.

Job Title: Chef Manager

Joined: 2021

I qualified as a chef over 30 years ago and have worked in many different roles within catering, including as a bakery-trained confectioner, dietary needs chef, Head Chef, Head of Catering and Chef Manager. I am also qualified to teach food safety, nutrition, and dietary needs from the CIEH. I was also a home care worker for two years, and so I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to my role as Chef Manager at Saxonwood.


The job I do plays a major role at Saxonwood as food and hospitality are always a highlight of our residents' day. I have enjoyed taking part in activities, planning, preparing, and producing food and drinks for events, getting to know the residents, receiving good feedback and implementing new menus. I feel privileged to work with a great team both in and out of the kitchen, producing food that looks as good as it tastes and is enjoyed by all.
