My mother is 84 years old and has lived at Heathfield Care Home for 15 months.
I visit 2-3 times a month and always find Mum happy and looking good. The home has a friendly and homely atmosphere, all the staff are kind and helpful. They treat Mum with respect and often have a laugh and a joke with
her whilst I am there, I can tell she enjoys their company.
The activities programme is good as is arranging events for friends and family, this Friday is Halloween night where there will be entertainment, fireworks and a buffet.
Although Mum has dementia she sometimes says to me ''I like it here, I have no complaints'' which I find very comforting !!

My mother (96) developed a bed sore grade 2 within three weeks of arriving at Heathfield. The home claimed she had arrived with a pre-existing bed sore. Instead, aged 96 she has fragile skin and a predisposition for such sores. They showed no compassion or sense of responsibility. On occasions her
teeth were dirty and her pads unchanged when very soiled / wet. Furthermore, little effort was made to dress my mother in co-ordinating clothes and once at least she was dressed in a skirt so loose it fell down in public. There was a lack of supervision in the day room - I saw approximately 10 elderly residents on their own without a member of staff present. In similar circumstances, my mother fell causing significant bruising to her face. Within six weeks I moved my mother to another home whose benefits were worth the cost of the move. Heathfield is not a terrible home (some of the rooms are very nice and the atmosphere friendly), but their standards of compassionate care are too low.

Reply from Lorraine Harrold, Manager at Heathfield

I was surprised to hear that you were dissatisfied with the care your mother received at Heathfield Care home. It was not our intention to cause discomfort and upset to you or your mother and apologies if you felt that we did.
CQC guidelines encourage carers to promote independence and choice with all residents and with this in mind, our carers are trained to do so diligently. This includes choice of meals, sleep/rest times and clothing among many. Personal hygiene is difficult if the resident does not wish to comply, and sometimes gentle persuasion is needed in these cases.

The appropriate equipment for pressure areas was sought for your mother and in place. The multidisciplinary team undertook regular checks on your mother's pressure areas and all treatment was guided by them.
Activities are paramount to Heathfield and a daily programme of morning, afternoon and evening sessions are held by members of our staff. There is an appropriate number of staff on duty at all times throughout a 24 hour day.
We are sorry that you felt the need to remove your Mother from the home. We appreciate your comments and will take them into consideration for the future, as we endeavour to provide the highest quality care for all our residents.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.675)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.675) out of 10 for Heathfield is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.975 for Heathfield is calculated as follows: ( (79 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 81 Ratings = 4.975

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Heathfield is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 23 registered maximum number of service users is 4.6, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
