The Martlets Care Home is situated in the West Sussex coastal town of East Preston, close to all its shops and amenities. The superb purpose built home opened in 2009 and has 8 separate self-contained wings each providing residents with their own spacious single en-suite bedrooms, their own lounge and dining areas and a team of dedicated professional care staff.

Care packages are put together with you and your family so that your choices and preferences always come first. The home offers a varied and interesting social activity schedule designed around residents’ own hobbies and interests and aimed at maintaining strong community links.

The Martlets provides long stay and respite residential care for older people with physical frailty and for older people who are living with dementia. A fully qualified care team provide the very highest standard of care to residents 24 hours a day.

I found The Martlets to be conducive to my brother's needs. The staff were attentive and informative.
My brother's room is sufficient in size and pleasantly decorated. The facilities include a spacious day lounge incorporating a television, radio and HiFi. There is also a library and games compendium.
The
garden is well-kept and available to my brother and his guests.
I understand he may be taken to the local village to purchase from the shops.

My father has been with you for 4 years and mum for 10 months. Both have different needs and the care and love shown by the staff has been amazing from carers down to domestic staff. They also make us as a family feel included in everything and this gives us complete peace of mind. Thank you so much

The room was small and dingy. Furniture was about 1970 style. The en-suite had no chair, I suffer from osteoarthritis and diabetes in lower limbs, the shower unit had seen better days. The hot water never got above warm and came out cloudy the first two days. Arrrived on a Friday to 'fish and chips',
batter needed 'hammer and chisel' to get into, chips cold and rubbery, the plate was hotter than the food. Most of the lunches consisted of frozen or dehydrated vegetables, roast potatoes had tough skins. I cannot recall having any fresh veg at all. Brown bread for toast ran out on the third day. Boiled eggs were solid. Overall food was not good, even residents sent back half-eaten meals. At best, on a good day, you'd get 1 star!

I cannot fault the staff at The Martlets, they look after my wife so much and she is always happy when I see her, the managers are amazing as well, whenever I have a question or query their support is amazing and always go the extra mile to help me as well as my wife, I'm so glad my wife went to The
Martlets and not anywhere else, thank you to all the staff and the managers.

My partner was very happy at The Martlets - he had a good rapport with the staff and they tried so hard to tempt him to eat and drink. After a prolonged spell in hospital (broken femur) and the discovery of cancer, he wanted to go (back home) to The Martlets.
He was given exemplary care when he returned.
I asked where would he like me to end his life, and had no hesitation in asking for it to be The Martlets.
All the staff were extremely kind to me and kept me up to date with everything. I cannot thank them enough.

My mum moved to the Martlets earlier this year and the staff have gone out of their way to make her feel loved and cared for. She can be quite a difficult person at times, but the manager, carers and nurses have got to know her ways and do everything they can to make her happy. I couldn't ask for more.

My Mum has been resident at The Martlets since 2020 with my Dad until he died in 2024. The staff are all lovely and Mum chats to them all. They always have activities and trips that she does and she really enjoys them. I feel happy knowing that Mum is so well looked after.

My dad left the home unnoticed by staff and walked to Rustington without anyone knowing he was gone! This is a red flag! He was found but they tried to make out it wasn't a big thing, security is not great. I feel the staff do not have adequate training in dementia care, one carer there told me he is
not the sort of resident they want there. Glad to say he is now in a much better place receiving the care that he deserves.

As you will be aware our dementia community at The Martlets is located on the first floor and to enter and exit it, various security methods are in place to make it secure. I am aware your father's incident was caused by a visitor letting him out of the home thinking he was also a visitor, which is incredibly regrettable and thankfully the alarm was raised quickly and he was returned to the home safely. Signage has now been placed in the home to advise visitors to be mindful of this possibility. We take the safety of our residents incredibly seriously and dementia training for all our staff is a mandatory requirement. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the distress this recent incident caused and we are glad to hear your father has settled well in his new home.

We could not have asked for or found a better care home for Mum. The staff were always very helpful, caring and understanding. The Martlets was/is bright, clean and tidy. The food was of excellent quality.
In short, it can be compared with a 5-star hotel.

All the time my mother-in-law was in this care home she was looked after extremely well. The staff were always very caring and helpful. The home was clean, bright and the food was excellent. The staff treated my mother-in-law as part of their family. when people asked what The Martlets is like I would

All the staff are friendly and welcoming when I come in, with a smile and a hello. They are all fond of my Dad. He enjoys the food, which is saying something for my Dad. He is cared for and any queries are taken seriously and sorted out by the staff.

Mum is starting her 3rd year of living in The Martlets, although Mum is not as active and sharp-minded as she was, she is still treated with fondness, friendship and discretion by each and every staff member.
We as her family are always greeted with smiles and regular updates on Mum's ever-changing
ways.
We are so grateful to each and everyone and trust them wholeheartedly to help Mum with all her personal needs and couldn't wish for a nicer care home.

My father has been at The Martlets for a couple of years now he is always well looked after and happy. This was my husband's second visit to this care home. He was happy to return here having previously stated he did not want to return to other homes. All his visitors commented on how clean, caring and friendly this home was. Grandson turned up at bathtime but the carer kindly delayed this until after
his visit. Very accommodating. Both my husband and I will be quite happy for him to spend another period of respite here.

My mother was a resident at The Martlets, West Sussex. In the six months Mum was there, she was cared for to a very high standard. The team are caring, kind and professional. Mum was very happy in this home right until the end. From a daughter's point of view, I found the home clean, the laundry never
muddled Mum's clothing with other people's and it was always clean and well-kept. I felt I could talk to office staff and nothing was too much trouble.

My dad was admitted as an emergency resident due to a very difficult situation that had occurred at home, in which he found he was unable to stay where he was. On admission, we found the management and staff extremely professional and supportive, and they provided us with the utmost understanding and
made my dad feel at ease immediately. The home is welcoming with a lovely atmosphere, and nothing is too much trouble. My dad has been at The Martlets for the past two weeks, and the difference in him is unbelievable. He has been very well looked after and has expressed that he wishes to remain there. I cannot thank them enough for how they have made a sad situation into a positive experience and continue to do so. I feel that I have not had to worry, and it has made this situation easier for my dad. I would recommend The Martlets to anyone, as they really have been outstanding.

My Mum went into the home for a trial period, she is now at the home full time and loves every minute of it there. The staff and team leaders are very good and caring. The food is very good and the cleanliness of the building is very good. I am very happy that my Mum is being well looked after. It has

I was made to feel very welcome by the senior team who went to great trouble to show me around, answer my questions and deal with my concerns. The assessment was thorough and sympathetic, both to my wife's needs and mine and has left me feeling completely confident that she will be safe and fulfilled.

I have worked with Shaw Healthcare since 2005. I started my career as a carer and have been lucky enough to be developed into the Service Manager role I hold today. I have worked in many Shaw Healthcare homes across the region and have over 15 years of experience in the care field. I absolutely love my job!


We have an amazing team at The Martlets and we are very proud of our ‘Martlets Family’ culture. The Martlets provides a warm homely environment, with a caring, kind-hearted, compassionate skilled team of staff.


No two days are the same in care, but every day is rewarding in its own way. Seeing smiles on faces, hearing laughter through our home and being able to support people when they need it most is what makes it a pleasure to go to work, each and every day.

My name is Hayley I have worked for Shaw health care since 2007. My first role with Shaw was as a kitchen assistant when I was 17. My next role was as a care assistant when I turned 18.


At 25 I became a team leader and embraced the responsibility and oversaw that my staff promoted the best quality person-centred care for our residents the way we all wish our own loved ones would receive.


At 31 I was given the opportunity to progress further within the company and I now am privileged to be “The Martlets Deputy Manager.” We have a beautiful home here at The Martlets and are lucky to be situated right near the beach.


I am very proud to work at The Martlets we have a fantastic team and there is a wonderful energy about the home. Every day is a joy at The Martlets.

I have worked at The Martlets since Feb 2019, starting as a Bank Support Worker. I enjoyed it so much that I chose to join full time and then worked up into the Team Leader role in June 2021.
I find the team and residents alike to be fantastic. There is always laughter to be heard and my team and management are always really supportive.
In June 2022 I was nominated for a Shaw Star award in the Wellness, Happiness and Kindness Category and attended the Regional Awards Ceremony.
With Shaw being an employee owned company we as staff have more influence over change and also receive some nice bonuses, which is great!

I am Steve, I have come from a predominantly retail background, from flipping burgers to stacking shelves to running my own stores.


After some deliberation and my staff saying that I would be good in care, in May 2016 I took the plunge into the world of care. Filled with trepidation, I started as a care worker at The Martlets and found it to be the most satisfying and rewarding job I have taken on. My favourite part was the ability to put a smile on our resident's faces and empower them to be as independent as possible.


2 years on and I was given the opportunity to become a Team Leader, which includes ensuring the timely administration of medication and liaising with medical professionals, to help promote the health and well-being of our residents.


2022 Presented an opportunity to work in Administration at the front of the house. This has enabled me to learn about the “back end” of care. Finances, Rota Management, Orders, admissions/discharges and most importantly taking relative calls and enquiries, liaising with all the teams of The Martlets to resolve these calls.
I am grateful to the current Martlets management for helping me progress within the home and would urge those thinking of working in care to take “The Plunge” just as I did!

I joined the Royal Navy as a chef at 16 years old, I served in the Navy for 11 years. Upon leaving I worked on the railways for 11 years which I eventually gave up due to becoming a full-time career for my late wife which I did for 30 years. Upon my wife’s passing I needed a new challenge and started at The Martlets on the 2nd of May 2023 as the maintenance in The Martlets Care Home.

I started at The Martlets in 2012 as a bank support worker following on from being made redundant as an apprentice hairdresser. From the moment I walked into the building I knew that care was the job for me and within days I applied to become a full-time career.


I loved my role, providing high-quality care to our residents and daily activities. In 2016 I took the plunge to apply for the team leader role that became available within The Martlets.


Becoming a team leader at 23 was a huge achievement for me, I had not long returned from maternity leave and was extremely proud of my achievements within the company.
