Like anyone in our situation, making the decision this time last year that my husband needed full time, residential care, was an extremely hard one. However, the minute my good friend and I walked into reception, we looked at each other and knew we had found the right place. In almost 12 months, neither
my husband nor I have had a single reason to doubt that the right decision was made. My husband said to me just before Christmas ‘I’m happy here, it was the best decision.’ The staff are all just exceptional and quite obviously love what they do. I spent Christmas Day and St Valentine’s Day with him and both were wonderful experiences with all the lovely things we would have had at home. I’m sure Easter Sunday would have been equally special were it not for Covid-19. Briar House is quite simply the cream of the crop and we are privileged to be part of the wider family. Thank you to all of you for all that you do.

Overall Mum is looked after but I found the laundry service terrible. They only do Mum's underwear which comes back discoloured. Food is not always to Mum's taste and no thought is put into her diet unless I am there to sort it.
Her room is not really cleaned properly and her side table is very dirty.

I am happy with the care received by my mother. She is well looked after, and her care has been adapted over time, to meet her changing needs as her dementia has progressed. The carers are very patient and kind.

My Dad had only been in Briar House for 3 days when he fell twice, needing hospitalisation. When he returned to the home, extra security was provided. Alarm mats and more supervision. He is eating well and seems to have settled. The staff are very good with him and I am satisfied now that he is receiving
every care.

The care provided to my mother is very good. On occasion, I have arrived to visit and staff have been very busy and short-staffed. But the care has always been there.

Never seem to have enough staff, I find the staff helpful. The night staff seem to be in a hurry. Things in my uncle's room are left out eg., deodorant left on chair yet should be placed in bathroom, clothes left on chair, a little care goes a long way. Activity staff are always busy, the residents
like doing different things.

The staff and the care they give my mum is exceptional, I couldn't fault any of the staff who do their very best in a very hard working environment for very little money.

This is the second time my sister has been here for respite. We are so pleased to see her so happy and well cared for. In fact, she does not want to go home. The staff here are so helpful and make us welcome. Well done all.

I have been in Briar House for fourteen months and have no complaints about my care. The staff are very good and treat me with respect, my appetite is poor so I do not always eat my food but the portions are too much for me. On the whole, I am very well looked after, but still wish I was in my own home.

My mother, aged 98 and 8 months, has been in Briar House for 4+years. The care home was recommended by our G.P.
My mother always tells me;
a) Don't worry about me, I am fine here
b) The staff are very kind to me
c) I am always warm and comfortable in here
d) The food is very good

I've noticed over the past few weeks, since new management has been in place, the quality of care has decreased. My grandmother's cleanliness is a constant issue and considering this is her only need she needs help with, it's extremely poor. Staffing is low and there doesn't seem to be enough staff
to help everyone. There is nothing stimulating for her to do and she is constantly bored.

Reply from Alison Boote, Operations Director at Briar House

We value the feedback received and truly believe this enables continuous improvement. We are sorry that this has been their experience of the service provided at the home, the concerns are being investigated and the findings and actions taken will be communicated to the relative named.

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.531)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.531) out of 10 for Briar House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.833 for Briar House is calculated as follows: ( (42 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.833

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.698 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Briar House is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.4 = 0.323

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
