Corton House is a 42-bed residential care home for older people, situated close to Norwich city centre but enjoying the leafy surroundings of mature walled gardens and with a variety of bright and comfortable communal rooms.

The home was established 70 years ago, among the first purpose-built care homes for older people in the UK, and still operates as a not for profit today: in care for the right reasons and built upon the Christian ethos of community and kindness. Although regular worship and pastoral services are available from the dedicated Chaplain, the home is open to people of any faith or none.

Hailed as a pioneer in social care back in 1952, Corton House continues to stand for innovation today, with its progressive approach to residents’ wellbeing. One of the cornerstones of this is the home’s holistic activities programme, offering something beyond the standard knitting and board games – although there is plenty of time for those too!

Corton House regularly partners with specialist arts and cultural providers, and has strong community links with local schools, businesses and charities allowing plenty of opportunity to socialise and learn something new. Recent examples include British Sign Language taster lessons, clay sculpture making inspired by local wildlife, natural ink making and collaborative poetry writing with a local school.

There is no 'one size fits all' approach to care at Corton House, each resident is treated as an individual and supported to make their own choices, from where they take their meals right down to how they like their perfect cup of tea. Meals are freshly cooked using local ingredients where possible, with all dietary requirements catered for. Residents can enjoy an ever-changing variety of delicious meals, as well as access to snacks and drinks all day long. The kitchens have a 5* food hygiene rating (last inspection, May 2023).

Mum has now been living in Corton House for 6 months. She has settled in well, is happy and feels safer than when living at home on her own. The staff are very friendly and as well as providing the necessary care are happy to help out with anything else she needs or would like assistance with. She enjoys
participating in the group activities, but also being able to relax quietly in her own room when she wishes. As her family, it's reassuring for us to know she now has 24 hour care in the lovely environment of Corton House.

Since living alone became too difficult for our Mum, Corton House has been the perfect place for her to move to. We are greeted with smiling faces on every visit and always feel welcome.
The whole team is kind, respectful and sensitive to individual needs. Nothing is too much trouble. Each week, there
is a varied, fantastic programme of activities, and it feels like a safe and happy environment, with warmth and care from the top filtering down.
Corton House is a light, comfortable, airy, spacious building with a lovely garden. There is a positive and fun atmosphere here, yet it is also very professional, with the latest technology for the resident's safety and comfort. We can not recommend Corton House more highly.

We feel really lucky that our mum lives at Corton House. She has dementia and is treated with the utmost respect and friendliness by everyone. She enjoys the activities although she may not remember doing them later and the variety and frequency of the activities is outstanding. Mum is reminded what
is happening and gets involved as a result. There are several areas where visitors and residents can sit and talk quite cosily, including a drinks machine for cappuccinos and chocolate in an area off the dining room overlooking a garden. The main garden is a lovely asset to the house and mum really enjoyed her walks around it this summer whenever weather allowed. There are also several areas in the garden where residents and guests can sit comfortably. The menus are varied every week and mum seems to enjoy going into breakfast, lunch and supper. She has periods of confusion but she is helped in a positive way. It is a safe and caring environment for her and seems to suit her very well.

My uncle settled very well into life at Corton House. He involved himself in his chosen activities. He particularly enjoyed the services delivered by the chaplain at the care home. My uncle and I felt that he was listened to and the staff always had time for a chat, which he really appreciated. The

My Mum was admitted to Corton House after an awful hospital experience, which left her confused, dehydrated, and frail.
From our first encounter, all the staff have been very professional and have helped us to get my Mum better. I felt that my Mum was the only resident in the home, as they all knew
her, spent time with her, and treated her like one of their own family.
The food is freshly prepared and nutritional, and it's lovely to see her put the weight on.
My only regret is that because she was so unwell she only experienced the wonderful activity programme in her 3rd week, every day there is something going on, and she loved it!
I can't express my gratitude enough to the staff and management of Corton House, I felt my Mum was safe and well looked after whilst she was in their care, It was a good end to an awful experience, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this little gem.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering for 2 days per year over the last 4 years, at Corton House.
I can confidently say that the residents are looked after to a very high level, proved by the positive comments and happy atmosphere amongst those benefitting from this lovely home. The staff are very
friendly and hugely caring towards the residents, who have good facilities and great activities organised for them daily.
The food produced in the kitchen is superb, everything is cooked professionally from scratch with fresh ingredients, and in a very clean and efficiently run environment.
As a volunteer, I have only ever felt extremely welcome, by staff and residents alike. I very much look forward to my next visit.

This is a lovely care home that provides excellent care for all the residents. The carers are very good at providing detailed care for all the residents, both taking the time to get to know each one and learning how to care for each individual based on their needs and medical conditions. This care home
provides one if not two activities every day for the residents. This makes them happier and keeps them physically and mentally active. The activities are aimed at everyone no matter their capabilities. They vary from musical performances to games and chair yoga / keep fit. They have regular services and chaplain visits if they want as well which is very important for the religious residents. The care home has been recently refurbished making it more aesthetically pleasing, more accessible, and are including an area for visitors to get hot drinks to sit with their families. The management team regularly talks to a group of residents to get feedback and put in place any suggestions they have.

Our wonderful Dad could not have been at a more caring and loving place, a place he called home. We witnessed first-hand the love, care and professionalism from all staff to Dad, from the manager to the caring staff, to the canteen staff. This love and care was also towards us at the end of his life.
So much so we have booked our rooms for later life! We can never put into words our gratitude to all the wonderful staff. Thank you.

I moved my mother (aged 102) from a care home in Shropshire to Corton House. The new care home has been very welcoming and everything is really well organised. They redecorated Mum's room before she arrived and she is delighted with it. She is very pleased with the food and the kindness of the carers.

The service given is very good in challenging times, particularly when there is a shortage of labour in this area.
Weekend staffing does seem to be an issue and not overly sure on the new alarm (silent)? Takes some getting used to and may be open to scrutiny.

We have found that residents are enjoying the calmer, more homely feel that our new silent alarm bells help foster. Please be assured that staff members are not reliant on seeing alarm calls on the screens alone; every member of the care team is equipped with a pager, which notifies the wearer of calls immediately. Higher importance calls – such as emergencies – do still sound aloud to demonstrate the urgency of the situation. If you have any other queries regarding the system, please feel free to discuss these with management who will be happy to clarify further. As you recognise, weekend staffing remains a challenge within the sector; we are currently on a recruitment drive which has thus far resulted in a number of fantastic new staff starting imminently.

The staff at Corton House is so kind and caring! I have seen them working first-hand with my dad and they are just so wonderful, encouraging and gentle with him, which is exactly what he needs. Because of this, he settled in very quickly. He enjoys the daily routine.
Every time we visit we are greeted
with a warm and welcoming smile and an update on how Dad has enjoyed the various activities. This then enables us to begin a conversation with him.
The view of the beautifully maintained garden from Dad’s bedroom is a lovely little touch.

Jason

Jason Parker

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2023

Jason has worked in the care sector since he left school 35 years ago. He has been lucky enough to hold every position in a care home and has managed a number of residential homes and housing with care schemes.


Jason has been nominated for a number of awards in the care sector:

Winner - Commitment Award, Norse Care


Since starting in April 2023 Jason's focus has been fostering an environment in which people love to live and love to work; where dignity is at the heart of everything we do.


Listening to residents to truly understand their needs and make improvements is really important to Jason and he can be regularly found catching up with residents over a cup of tea or in an activity session!


When he is not at work he enjoys spending time with his family - also care workers themselves - his dog Pip, and playing racket sports like squash.


Debbie

Debbie Goulding

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Joined: 1997

One of the longest-serving members of staff at Corton House, Deborah originally joined as an Activities Coordinator and part-time Senior Carer, later becoming a full-time Senior Team member.


She has been the in-house manual handling trainer since 2001.


She is NVQ 5 qualified, an NVQ Assessor and has completed Leadership and Management training. She also supervises Health and Safety.


Deborah became a dementia coach in November 2013 with ongoing training through 2014.


Annette

Annette Aldridge

Job Title: Head of Care

Joined: 2018

Annette joined Corton House in 2018 as a Care Supervisor before working her way up to Head of Care. She is NVQ Level 5 qualified.


Maria

Maria Widdrington

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

Joined: 2010

Maria has been a qualified yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga for 10 years.


She specialises in yoga for the over 60's and for people with Parkinson's Disease. She also has a qualification in Psychology. She has completed several courses since joining Corton House in 2010 including Dementia and Care of the Dying.


Maria has recently completed her NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care.


Sean

Sean Knox

Job Title: Head of Catering

Joined: 2020

Sean's motto is nothing is too much trouble. He feels that a big part of his role is not simply cooking for, but working with residents to create wholesome, nutritious and collaborative menus!


Aside from his passion for locally sourced ingredients and traditional dishes, Sean holds a Level 4 Food Hygiene Certificate and Supervisor and Management qualifications.


Sean says of his job, "Getting that thank you from a resident, however big or small, just makes my day and that's the whole reason I work in care."


Sophie

Sophie Edwards

Job Title: Administrator

Joined: 2022

Sophie is the the first friendly face to greet visitors to Corton House and undertakes a variety of support functions to keep things ticking over. She is one of Corton House's Accessible Information and LGBTQ+ Champions, as well as acting as a key worker for some residents.


Sophie has a Double AVCE (A Level equivalent) in Health and Social Care. Before joining us at Corton House, she worked in various administrative and customer service roles; as well as gathering valuable experience as part of the discharge team at the NNUH, supporting patients who would need care at home to get home safely or to find then the right care home to move in to.


Sophie enjoys the variety of her role and working as part of a supportive team, but it’s the time she gets to spend with the residents that makes her happiest!
