Shipdham Manor, which is more than 200 years old, may have a lot of history but offers facilities very much in keeping with the twenty-first century.

Shipdham Manor in Shipdham is well-situated to give residents easy access to the local post office, church, village store and doctor's surgery.

Care staff are chosen not only for their skills but also for the warmth, friendliness and caring attitude.

An optician, dentist and chiropodist regularly visit the care home and an in-house hairdressing salon caters to residents' hair needs as well as providing manicures.

The staff at Shipdham Manor are exceptional. This goes right across the board, from the manager to the youngest team member. Care and gentle manners are very evident, as is their way of dealing with my Mum, who, with advanced Dementia, is not always easy, and in addition, is unable to stand or walk
unaided.
Recently, a Covid outbreak within the home caused inevitable staff shortages when demand was high. I know the staff were under huge pressure, and yet they managed to take extra time to deal with two issues that became apparent after my mother was well again. These issues were dealt with quickly and efficiently, and I was really appreciative of the extra attention the staff gave.
My mother has been a resident for over five years, and throughout all that time, the care and support shown for Mum have been excellent. As I recently moved away from Norfolk, I feel particularly blessed to be able to leave her, knowing that she will always be well looked after during my long absence in-between visits.

Thank you so much for your lovely, kind words, Frances. This really means a lot to all of the staff. It is nice knowing that our hard work is recognised. Your mum is such a lovely lady, and we all enjoy looking after her! We are glad to hear that you feel relaxed about your mum being with us.

My mum has been at Shipdham Manor for some time now, and I have never had a problem with her care. The staff keep relatives very well informed of everything that is happening with their family member, and are always kind and respectful to my Mum and us her wider family. Mum was in the care home before
the Covid-19 began, and I knew the whole time that I couldn't see her that Mum was being looked after. My work has meant that I have been likely to come in contact with people with the virus, and I have been reluctant to visit Mum as I don't want to unknowing infect her or any of the other residents or staff. This has caused me to feel guilty at not visiting as often as I should (despite testing, I'm conscious I may be infected) but all through the pandemic, my mind has been at rest because I know Mum is safe and cared for. Whenever I've been there, the staff always look happy, and despite being very busy, have time to ask after us and answer any questions we may have.

Since moving in, my grandmother has been very happy. She is clean and well-fed. All the staff are so lovely to her, and she has said how amazing they all are. Her transition into the care home was well organised and smoothly executed, which made us all relaxed and very happy. Excellent for my grandmother,
and would highly recommend!

The staff are all fantastic; they are kind, thoughtful, caring and always happy. My mum has settled in completely and is really very content and happy to be there. I cannot believe that she has fitted in so well and is always so complementary about the wonderful staff and the food. We couldn't be more
pleased with this marvellous home.

My mother was a resident for 15-months. She was very happy in Shipdham Manor. The end of life care she received was excellent. The staff were all very kind and caring towards her. She was made comfortable and was very well looked after, nothing was too much trouble. She was treated with great dignity,
and I will be forever thankful to the staff who took care of her.

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you for your kind words. Shipdham Manor is part of the 6-steps to end of life care programme, and all staff are specially trained to support and care for individuals during this time. We aim to support families, as well as residents during this hard time, and it's lovely to hear this has been reflected. My experience with the home has been ongoing since my friend for whom I have power of attorney has been in residence. All the staff have shown care and respect for all residents, always friendly when I visit, although not very often this year due to covid. When I contact them, whoever answers the phone
knows immediately who I am asking about.

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you for your kind words. We all work as one big team to provide excellent care for our residents and support for their loved ones, no matter what job role they are in. Visiting has been hard on everyone recently, and with fingers crossed, we are looking forward to being able to welcome you back into our home.

My nan has been in this home for over two years now, and I can hand on heart say this is a fantastic home full of caring staff members. My nan has a cheeky character, and it’s lovely to see that reflected in the way how the staff interact with her. You can feel the warmth when you walk through the front
door. They work hard at getting all residents involved in activities, and it’s lovely to see that reflected in the newsletter they send out. During this time, it has been wonderful to be able to still ‘see’ my nan via FaceTime. I can not thank them enough for taking such good care of my nan. It’s a hard decision to transition to a care home, but the staff here made it easy. 5-star care. Thank you.

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you for your lovely review; your nan is such a loved character who is a pleasure to care for. All our staff work in a person-centred way, and it is lovely to hear that their hard work and dedication to all our residents have been acknowledged. These times have been hard for everyone not being able to see their loved ones, so knowing that we are offering FaceTime, really helps with the emotional wellbeing of our residents and their loved ones. The activity newsletter has been a fantastic way to keep our relatives involved in what is happening within the home.

The lack of meaningful visits over this last year has been very hard for relatives and residents alike, but it is so reassuring to feel that my mum is being so well cared for. Everything has been done to keep the residents safe, which I am certain has thrown up unbelievable challenges for staff. And
yet, from a casual Skype viewpoint, they always seem to be going about their work with the usual care and good humour. Mum always looks well-groomed, regularly sporting a renewed hairdo, even during the lockdowns, which is a huge boost to her well-being. Many grateful thanks.

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you so much for this lovely review. The staff have been incredible this last year keeping the morale high for all our residents. We have been so lucky to have been able to continue with having our hairdresser here as she is also a member of staff. A little thing of them being able to have their hair done really boosts their confidence and gives them that little bit of normality during these lockdowns.

Staff have coped remarkably well with what must be very difficult circumstances, so far as we can tell from our mostly remote contact since COVID entered the picture. Contact with our relative has been facilitated as much as possible through Skype calls and now the advent of the visiting 'Pod'. Our
relative always appears well-cared for and is treated with dignity and kindness. Interaction with staff is prompt, open and informative, particularly when a hospital stay was needed recently.

Our mum is in Shipdham Manor and the staff are absolutely wonderful, I can't recommend this home enough. They have always gone the extra mile in everything they do, kept up to date with everything we need to know. We can truly say we struck gold when we were able to get our mum into this home.
Shortly
before Covid-19, they went into lockdown to protect and shield the residents. This was done very quickly. Staff were suddenly put under enormous pressure (and no doubt stress) to ensure the safety of themselves, and of course the residents. And yet the staff recognised the need for the family to be allowed some form of contact with our loved ones, and offered us contact through FaceTime, my mum was also vulnerable and shielding so couldn't leave her room for 12 weeks, they now hold fortnightly Zoom Meeting for families to be brought up to speed with what’s going on along with activity newsletters. Best of all, I can arrange a time to see my mum at a social distance of 2metres. Fantastic.

Thank you for your kind words, we aim to do everything we can to protect our residents and especially during these current circumstances we know how difficult it can be not being able to see your loved ones. Mum initially came to Shipdham Manor for daycare following my dad’s death. From day 1 she was welcomed like one of the family. The staff are warm, friendly and clearly enjoy working with their residents. The manager was a huge support to mum and to me when it came to deciding residential care was the
best way forward in November 2019. And, during the lockdown and since my mum’s deterioration, the staff have taken great care of her, showing enormous dedication to their work and genuine love for her. Part of my thanks is to recommend them wholeheartedly.

My husband was given a place at Shipdham Manor, during the Covid crisis in early May, following his diagnosis of Alzheimer's in April, at a time when no other care home would offer him a placement. It was an extremely difficult time for all of us as a family. The hardest part has been not being able
to visit the home or get to meet anyone. However, I am amazed at the professionalism of the manager and all staff. Everyone has been so kind, friendly and understanding. Helping my husband to settle. I don't know what the future holds for my husband and our family, but I do feel very reassured that my husband is receiving the best care he possibly could, in the current circumstances. Many thanks to all. Now that social distance visits are allowed, I have been able to see my husband in the grounds of the home, but not actually able to see inside the home as yet, however, my husband is happy with the facilities so I am happy with that too. It's clear, residents are the priority.

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you for your kind words. Having someone with dementia is hard enough, let alone not being able to see him, so I am glad the social distancing visits are helping you both. I look forward to showing you the home and meeting more of the staff. He has settled in really well and has really enjoyed helping the staff where he can, especially in the garden which I'm sure he will look forward to showing you when he can.

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, I found the staff very friendly and helpful to both myself and my mother. Shortly after the outbreak, the home went into lockdown to protect and shield the residents. This was done very quickly. Staff were suddenly put under enormous pressure (and no doubt stress) to ensure
the safety of themselves, and of course the residents. Running a care home for residents, who likely didn't appreciate the significance of the situation, and, to try and maintain a higher standard of hygiene than normal must have been challenging. And yet the staff also recognised the need for family and friends to be allowed some form of contact with their loved ones, and so arranged contact through Telephone, Skype or FaceTime. This led to a similar method of updating family and friends on the current situation in the home, via Zoom meetings. A great idea and method of keeping up to date with the current situation and allowing questions to be asked. I am extremely happy with this service

Reply from Kayleigh Emsley, Manager at Shipdham Manor

Thank you for your kind review, Nigel. We have had to adapt our working environment and at times it has been difficult, but the staff have taken it in their stride to make sure that the love and care we aim to provide hasn't been affected. We understand how the pandemic can cause emotional distress on an individual, and it's important that we try and ease this as much as possible for the residents and their loved ones. Your kind words are greatly appreciated.

My father has been a resident in this care home for three and a half years. Throughout this time the staff have treated him very good with care, compassion and dignity. He is very happy here which is very reassuring for my siblings and I. The staff have got to know him well, which is so important as
they know when he is unwell and sort out the problem quickly, calling and informing me which is very important to me.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.523)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.523) out of 10 for Shipdham Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.771 for Shipdham Manor is calculated as follows: ( (76 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.771

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.752 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shipdham Manor is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.4 = 0.952

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
