Sydney House was my Mums home for the final years of her life. She died there on New Year's Eve. Mum has been offered wonderful care and support even to provision of a special chair she could safely be seated in and a hoist in her room. In the final days, she continued to be cared for with both dignity
and respect. The staff were amazing. Even though I live some distance away in Devon, I spoke often with the careers who always went the extra mile. Although mum had mixed dementia and was unable to walk, she was still enabled to visit the dining room for meals while she could and the home and her room were always clean and there was never any odour around. Staff checked on her frequently and encouraged liquids. Mums wishes to remain at Sydney house until the end were honoured and I cannot commend this home enough for their excellence of care. They deserve recognition for the superb care they offer. Thank you.

I was only in the home for 10 days. Everybody was very good and helpful. I really enjoyed being here. I really enjoyed the food very much, If I have to go into care, I would certainly like to go back there but I don't know how to sort that out.

My Dad moved into Sydney House in July 2016. He has vascular dementia and it was no longer possible for my mum to care for him at home. It was a very distressing time for both my parents who had been married for 60 years. We were anxious about choosing the right home for Dad, but we need not have worried.
My Dad settled very quickly at the home and this is a credit to the staff who made him feel so welcome. The standard of care my Dad receives is excellent and it is clear that the staff know him so well, personalising their care and approach to meet his changing needs. My mum regularly spends the day at the home and has her meals with my Dad. The manager told my mum very early on that Sydney House was her home too and that she is welcome anytime. The manager is always visible, warm and friendly and is clearly passionate about ensuring all the residents receive a high standard of care.
My Dad always says that he loves living at Sydney House and how wonderful all the staff are.

The staff at Sydney House have been fantastic, caring for my grandmother who is becoming increasingly confused. She has been treated with dignity and respect and appears happy, relaxed and well cared for. The facilities and location are excellent.

Sydney House has a non-sterile, homely feel with a gentle routine to the day for the residents. The lovely staff make it look easy but spring into action if required. My family and I are welcomed at any time to see our mum and although she has limited mobility there seems to be activities for able residents
and she looks forward to her weekly visit from her own hairdresser. As her appetite is very poor the catering staff have got to know her needs which is a big help to her well-being. As a family, we would wish to continue to look after her ourselves but her needs are too great for us to do so safely. It was a difficult decision to place mum in care and it has taken a lot of adjusting for both her and us but Sydney House is "home" now and we are most grateful for that.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.192)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.192) out of 10 for Sydney House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.714 for Sydney House is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.714

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.478 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sydney House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 9 = 0.778

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I have previous experience of working with children with emotional and behavioural issues, adults with learning difficulties, as well as my current experience of working with the elderly. I’ve been with NorseCare for nearly 15 years, working in a number of roles during that time. Progressing through NorseCare’s Emerging Talent programme, I became a Deputy Manager at Sydney House, and became Manager earlier in 2019.

I believe in leading by example to ensure a high level of care is delivered at all times, and, with the support of the care team at the home, I am keen to develop the home further in the local community, focussing on delivering high quality person centred care for everyone to enjoy.
