Thomas Tawell House on the North side of Norwich city centre, provides dedicate care and support to older people, specialising in support for people with a visual impairment or sight loss.

Recently purchased by Black Swan care group, the home is being extensively refurbished to create a bright and comfortable environment for the residents.

Most of the 37 bedrooms have en-suite facilities and residents are welcome to decorate and personalise their rooms. There is a dining room, adapted bathrooms and communal living rooms, including the newly redecorated Mitre Room; throughout the home there’s specialist flooring and colourways to assist residents with sight impairments to move around the home independently.

Sweet smelling plants and flowers have been planted in the private garden to create a sensory experience.

There is an array of stimulating and engaging group and one-to-one activities available for residents to enjoy – based on their preferences.

As Thomas Tawell House is a home specialising for people who are visually impaired, I find the staff and management there extremely kind and caring. I feel at ease knowing that my mother is in a safe environment and being cared for.

I am the daughter-in-law and this is my opinion and as a retired employee of CQC, I do have a personal view about the lack of dignity for my mother-in-law.


Her clothing and presentation could be given a bit more thought.
I really think it lacks dignity for her.


My sister-in-law cleans the

room periodically as its often dusty.
My husband is never contacted, despite he's N.O.K.

In February 2018 the time came for my 92-year-old mother to move into Thomas Tawell House as because of health and care needs she could no longer live alone.
At a time when she needed support and understanding the staff could not have been any better from the chief executive down to the support staff.
The home she now has, it is giving her a new social life and a reason to want to get up in the mornings. Mum is happy. Thomas Tawell House her family thank you.
