Mellish House is located in the village of Great Cornard, near Sudbury, close to the town's shops and cafes. Providing residential dementia care for up to 48 elderly residents including trial stays, respite breaks and convalescent care as well as long term care.

The home has a light, airy and welcoming ambience and residents benefit from a broad and thoroughly enjoyable range of activities. Many bedrooms feature a memory box by the front door, where mementos from a resident’s life help to personalise their room and also remind staff and visitors of the individual’s life story.

Mellish House is part of Caring Homes, an established, family-run care company. Every team member receives their unique ‘Living in My World’ dementia training which is accredited by City and Guilds. It highlights the importance of meaningful activities and a stimulating environment for people living with dementia, as well as addressing clinical aspects of care.

My mother has been here for just a few days but the change in her behaviour and level of happiness is remarkable.
The staff are not only compassionate and gentle but skilful in their dealings and they actually seem to love their work.

I have health issues of my own and the home is very accommodating to me when I visit. My husband is upstairs and due to my issues I can't go up there so they bring him down - they look after him and me. They are all top drawer.

The team at Mellish were amazing and Dad's end of life care was handled in a professional and sensitive way. We were supported every step of the way and Dad had a peaceful and pain-free end. The staff were caring and understood totally his agitation and aggression as part of the disease and he was always

My cousin was in Mellish House about 6 months. As I lived 3 hours away her stay gave me peace of mind. I know the staff would do their best with a lady who was unhappy to lose her independence and could be awkward. They were kind and patient and I could rely on them to contact me if necessary. On my
visits, I found Mellish House to be clean and tidy and anything I picked up on was immediately dealt with.

Mum has been in Mellish House on a temporary placement (a chronic pain condition means she could no longer live in her own home), pending relocation to a care home near us. The staff have taken excellent care of her - several times when we visited she told us how kind they were - and helped her adapt
to her future circumstances. The manager is a credit to her profession: although she knew that Mum would only be there temporarily she made sure that they knew Mum's history, likes and dislikes etc. All the staff have been conscientious and responsive. The manager also went 'above and beyond' - she gave us advice regarding arranging a care home placement in our town and provided information to help the assessment. I have to say Mum's room, though clean, was a bit shabby, but perhaps this room is regularly used for temporary placements. The care given, and the attitude in which it is given, is far more important than the condition of the furniture! Highly recommended.

Mum has no complaints, obviously still confused. Some items have gone missing which could be obvious to mum hiding stuff as she did at home.

Although the staff are always busy, they always give help when needed or asked for. My Wife loves music and from time to time there is a singalong in the diner where you can also play c.d.'s. A lot of the residents enjoy the interactive table and on sunny days we can go out into the garden. Overall
my Wife is very settled which is a great comfort to me.

I visit twice a week and am there for a couple of hours each time. I am always impressed by the kind attention given to residents even when they may be agitated. The kindness of all the staff is noticeable. The atmosphere is of controlled calm most of the time, but the activities co-ordinators certainly
enliven and cheer the atmosphere with their presence and activities. Given the fact that this is a dementia home I am always amazed at the positivity and cheerfulness of staff members, something I would find really difficult to do. My friend seems to be well cared for in a comfortable, clean, well-organised home.

Mellish House took our dad in in difficult circumstances, they were excellent, very caring and helped us in every way. They keep us informed at all times about the care our dad needs and will possibly need. All staff are willing to talk or help us or our dad at any time. They are all very caring. Dad
is always clean and tidy whenever we see him, they encourage us to personalise his room any way we wish.
Cannot fault the time and care they show to the resident's, the food looks appetising and plenty of it, they are encouraged to eat and drink. The home is very clean and there are plenty of rooms for the resident's to sit, all different styles. They are encouraged to do things if they want. I have watched the interaction between staff and resident's and it is lovely.

Maekhala Allan

Job Title: Home Manager

As Home Manager of Mellish House, I lead a professional care team in delivering the highest standards of specialist care for up to 48 elderly people living with dementia.


I have over 23 years of experience across Adult Mental Health, Elderly Mental Health and Adult Social Care services, spending the last 14 years in management roles. I hold SVQ’s in Adult Health and Social Care Levels 3 & 4 and QCF Level 5.


As a people person, caring has always been a passion of mine. This is the aspect that makes my job worthwhile, making a positive impact on our residents and their families lives no matter how big or small, in what has become their home and supporting them to continue a good quality of life.


I continuously work to improve and maintain the care standards at Mellish House and have in the past help to raise thousands of pounds to purchase items that have had a positive impact on those I support, including a wheelchair power pack for someone to get out and about, an electronic massage bed to help with MS symptoms and a wardrobe full of clothes for someone who lost all their belongings in a house fire. It’s these personal touches that can make all the difference.


The local community is very important to Mellish House, I have worked hard to build a good reputation to make Mellish a home of choice, this includes an ‘Oustanding’ rating by CQC and a continuous care team who help deliver an excellent standards of care to our residents.


Away from work, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and dog. I also love music and socialising with friends.
