Shortlisted as a finalist for the Caring UK Awards 2023, in the South Care Home of the Year category, Shaftesbury House is a very special home.

Many of the team are long serving, the home manager has been with Shaftesbury House for over 20 years, and the deputy manager over 15 years. And with just 27 residents, it has a very warm, family feel. And of course, family and friends are welcome at any time.

The team are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, supporting them to do things which bring them joy. This summer they organised a wonderful trip to Felixstowe Beach (August 2023), with many staff volunteering to support the trip on their day off. They hired a rickshaw so the residents could ride along the promenade, followed by fish and chips by the sea.

The way relatives are embraced into life in the home is very important. There are regular relatives’ meetings where they share ideas. At a recent meeting relatives felt a giant pergola would enhance the garden. Devoted to giving their residents the best, the team threw themselves into action, raising over £1,000 with sponsored events!

The staff organise so many fabulous events for the residents and their families, each accompanied by a themed menu, from summer barbecues to a Country and Western celebration.

And the team’s own families are also part of life in the home, with staff members’ loved ones doing everything from singing and dancing at events, and even bringing in their pet tortoises for the residents to pet!

Mealtimes are a real highlight of the day. The chefs create delicious, seasonal meals, with home-baking for afternoon tea. The assistant chef is an exceptionally talented baker and creates special treats for birthdays and celebrations. And of course, for any celebration there’s a special menu, like cream teas for mothering Sunday or a barbecue and themed cakes for the coronation!

My mum is very well cared for, even though there are not always enough staff. The carers/staff really work hard and have a lot of compassion for all of the residents. The home has done marvellous to keep covid19 out of the home, and that shows the high standards. Thank you.

We are very pleased our mother is at the care home. She has settled in well thanks to the staff. The staff and management are always willing to listen to any concerns or suggestions relating to our mother or the home. The staff are always happy and caring.

My impression of the home after 10 months is mixed. The atmosphere is always good with cheerful friendly supportive staff. However, I feel that at times the care given is less than adequate due to staff shortages and pressure of work.
The general state of the building needs attention but the place
is very clean and odour free.

My husband has been in the care home only since 25th July 2019. Up to this time I have found things very satisfactory. Room, food and care seem adequate in relation to his needs. Everyone seems very helpful and polite to visitors.

I have known my 'family friend' for over 70 years and it was her 100th birthday.
The staff were so kind and invited me to sit with her at lunch along with the deputy mayor and council escort.
The '100 Birthday' banners and flags/bunting were put up and flowers, gifts arrived.
I helped my friend to
open her cards and all the residents saw the card from The Queen.
During lunch I saw how patient and respectful the staff were, asking each resident what vegetables etc, they wished to have.
The home also made a '100 Birthday' cake. Marvellous.

My father recently stayed at Shaftesbury House in Ipswich for respite care, and from the moment he arrived, he felt at home. He loved his stay there, all the staff are so friendly, and helpful, there is a lovely homely atmosphere. The food is excellent, and the caring exceptional. The rooms are bright
and airy, and spotlessly clean. He had a lot of visitors whilst he was there, and they all commented on how lovely the staff were, and how happy and contented my father was. We cannot praise it highly enough! My father is now looking forward to his next “holiday” at Shaftesbury House!

My sister has been living at Shaftesbury House for a few years now.
She is very happy living there, the carers are very helpful and welcoming. when I visit nothing is to much trouble.
The Christmas party which was held was a great success and the food was delicious.
The home has recently had some
refurbishments completed and it has had a big impact on the space available to all the residents and visitors.
I would highly recommend Shaftesbury house to anyone who is looking for a warm and welcoming home from home.

I had my auntie in this home but she passed away in September. She got good care. I still come every other week to see the residents and do the bingo, I enjoy it. They have done the home up, it's bigger now so more room, it looks nice now. The kitchen staff are very good. The food is lovely. The carers
work hard to do their best.

My mother is well looked after at this home. The carers always have time for the residents, supporting them and chatting with them. There are regular events and activities taking place for the residents if they wish to join in. Lounge and dining room have recently been refurbished to a high standard.
Food is very good with a choice of menu.

Our dad has been at this home for just over a year now. Right from the time he walked through the door he was made extremely welcome, safe and comfortable. Staff are very attentive and share his passion for sport with him.
In addition they are very accommodating over his needs and requests. His room
has recently been updated with a brand new en-suite. We always find a friendly welcome from everybody.

My mother is very well cared for and the staff are very caring. In an ideal world residents would have more individual attention although I understand we are not in an ideal world. As more residents tend to be suffering from dementia, perhaps more stimulation would be good but I understand this would
be an extra expense. Staff are extremely caring.

When my mother was in hospital. I has to find temporary respite care as quickly as possible. As soon as I walked into the home I was struck by how friendly, bright, homely and clean as was. My mother has become a permanent resident and is very happy there.
All staff are very friendly and welcoming.
My mother receives excellent care and is kept busy with lots of activities. Whenever I have had any questions everyone is always so helpful. There is a happy atmosphere there and I always witness residents being treated with compassion.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.683)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.683) out of 10 for Shaftesbury House Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.783 for Shaftesbury House Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (83 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.783

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shaftesbury House Residential Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
