My Mother has been in St Phillip & St James for several years and I have visited her hundreds of times. During that time, my Mother has been extremely well looked after. The staff are exceptionally professional, friendly, kind and caring and overall provide a first class service. My Mother's personal
difficulties with mobility are recognized by staff and dealt with efficiently.
I have always found the home clean, tidy and well-run. There is an overriding caring attitude to everything they do. My Mother wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I have visited my friend in this home twice since her recent admission. She has praised the care, kindness and good humour of the staff unreservedly. I understand that the home is staffed almost entirely but regular carers with very little use of agency staff, which itself indicates good quality care
and management. My friend, while very much regrettably the need to be in care, feels that she couldn't be anywhere better. During my visits, the affection between them has been obvious, and I myself have been treated with courtesy and kindness.

A lovely family-run business with staff who really care about their resident's welfare. Unfortunately, my father-in-law now needs specialist dementia care, otherwise, we would have no hesitation in him staying for respite care again.

After a couple of bad experiences at previous homes, I was relieved when we finally got my nans feet through St Phillips & St James door. We, as a family, could finally breathe a sigh of relief that she was safe, happy and was being looked after properly. Since that day, both hers and our relationship
with the staff at the home has grown immensely. They will forever be in our hearts for the way they manage and look after her.
Their communication with us has been superb, and I honestly don’t think we could have gotten through the dreaded Covid outbreak the way we did without the constant updates from them. My nan suffers from dementia/Alzheimer’s, and the way they treat her needs still amazes me now.
So I would like to thank each and every one of you (especially a certain someone), for the way you look out for her and help make her be the amazing woman she is.

The home staff are very caring and warm, but, unfortunately, the owner/management team are the polar opposite.
My mother was invited to stay at the home aged 93, with a diagnosis of mixed dementia. 17 months later we were summoned to a “care review” meeting in which they said she was too difficult
to care for and gave her one month's notice to leave. As this was my first indication of this situation, I asked why this was the first I’d heard about it, the reply was that COVID had prevented them communicating the situation - despite my seeing my mother on a regular basis. No reply was given to an email asking what about Zoom, Skype, or a phone call.
The next week I was emailed requesting her forwarding home and departure date and repeated updates of her notice period.
Obviously finding a suitable home takes time and serious consideration, irrespective of availability.
My mother died at the end of January. I was grateful that she never knew she was unwelcome at St Philip and St James and didn’t have to go through the anxiety of a move to another home.
The first email I received after her death was to ask me to return the TV wall attachment so they could use it for another resident. When I replied that we had bought it, I was asked for the purchase receipt. No condolences were offered until 3 ½ weeks later, at the end of the accountant’s email detailing her final account.
My advice to anyone wanting to stay here is- Don’t get old and never complain about anything.

Thank you for your review. The five-star rating for the staff of St Philips is most welcome and reflects our ongoing work to provide a first-class home from home for all our residents. We have had communications about the other items mentioned. I would be very happy to further discuss those with you if that would be of assistance as this will help us further improve our services.

We are so glad that my mother was able to settle into this care home before the pandemic. She has very little memory and gets confused, and we were able to visit often while she settled in, which made lockdown much more bearable for us and for her. She has been treated with kindness and understanding,
and we can see from her smile when staff talk to her that she is well cared for. It has made such a difference over the last two difficult years.

My aunt, 94, has been a resident since the summer of 2019, unable to stay in her own home, she was frail and nervous. From the moment she was welcomed into the home, she loved and settled into her lovely bedroom, she relaxed, made new friends and joined in activities. Every time we visit, she tells
us how happy she is, how kind and caring all the staff are and how well looked after she is. All the staff are always very helpful and have all done a remarkable job during the very difficult Covid days. My aunt has blossomed, enjoys her knitting, having her hair and nails done, loves her cups of tea, and has told us it’s the best thing I did coming in here.
We feel completely at ease, that Auntie has the very best care, with lovely friendly staff. Before Covid, we always felt so welcome, also to join in the lovely activities and be included. Since Covid, we were always updated, kept fully informed, always very easy to make appointments for pod visits.
We cannot recommend this home enough.

Mum has been a resident at the home for 6-months. She has settled in well and enjoys the excellent, friendly, personal care given to her by the staff. She enjoys the ample food provided and the entertainment that is laid on. Her room is comfortable, light and of good size with ensuite toilet and shower
facilities. The room and public spaces are kept very clean, tidy and fresh at all times. All the NHS recommended precautions against Coronavirus have been followed. My experience of dealing with the staff has been excellent. They are professional, always friendly, very helpful and willing to give advice. I would definitely recommend the home.

My mum has been a resident here since December 2020, and due to Covid restrictions, it has not always been possible to visit, apart from a pod visit, but I would like to say, that the home has always endeavoured to accommodate visits whenever possible and encouraged visits outside of the home when this
was safe. All of the staff there are very caring and really go out of their way to make daily life in the home as pleasant as it can be. I am very happy with the care that Mum is receiving and have peace of mind that she is getting the best care possible. Thank you to all the staff, and would highly recommend this home for a loved one.

I cannot fault St Phillip & St James home for the excellent care and treatment my mother has received from the staff at this delightful residence. She has been there for about 4-years and is very happy, which is all we, as a family, can ask for. There is a happy and relaxed atmosphere in this lovely
home, and there is plenty for the residents to do, well organised by the various staff members. I am just so thankful that Mum is in such a caring place, and I would recommend this home to anyone.

Initially, I was concerned about my father moving into a care home because it was a huge change, but the staff and systems at St Philip & St James made the whole process much easier. He settled in really well and relatively quickly. He likes the routines because he knows what to expect, and of course,
social activities such as quizzes, the film club and games. Healthy meals are cooked on the premises, which smell good, and when it was his birthday, a decorated fruitcake was kindly made and shared.
The home itself feels very homely; it is very comfortable and clean. The size of the rooms is varied because it is composed of several buildings, but this makes it more interesting.
Quite quickly one realises that the ethos behind the home, the wonderful, thoughtful, caring and committed staff are its star qualities. I would certainly recommend St Philip & St James.

The staff at St Philips are so kind and caring to my mother, who has lived there for over 2-years. There is good continuity of care provided, as there are many loyal staff, which makes it easier for residents to make relationships with their carers. This also enables the home to have a homely family
atmosphere as staff are not constantly changing. The staff were fantastic during Covid and showed great commitment in difficult times.
I recommend this home as a kind, caring place to be with committed staff.

My mother moved into St Philips & St James care home after a stroke and unexpected family tragedy.
The staff showed compassion from the outset. They made all the arrangements to assess and transport my mother directly from the rehabilitation unit where she was staying. My mother was understandably
anxious and confused, but she has settled in, and this is now truly her home where she is surrounded by caring staff in a loving family environment, and she feels safe and secure, even though she is suffering from some memory loss. She adores her room with lovely views, a huge TV and her own telephone. She enjoys the activities they provide, often preferring to watch rather than join in. They also take her out for walks in the local area, which she loves. The staff have been fantastic in keeping the residents safe during the pandemic and have made every effort to keep us informed about changes in visits during this time. My mother is very content, and I look forward to her long and happy stay here.

The staff at St Philips are wonderful and really care about the residents, so it is a real home for my mum. They work very hard and have done all that they could to make it possible for us to see my mum. There is a pod, and before the latest lockdown, I could see her in her room. I was able to take
my mum to the optician and could see how well and content she is.
It is a wonderful, caring home, and I have complete peace of mind that my mum is in the best place for her and getting loving care.

I would like to recommend this home. My nan was a resident here for a couple of years, and the standard of care she received was always exceptional. Despite the restrictions of Covid, the staff always tried to improve their quality of life, which was not always easy! I must also add that in the last
2-weeks of her life, several staff, in particular, went above and beyond to make her comfortable, and for that, I will be eternally grateful.

My mother has been residing at St James & St Phillips care home for five years now, and I would highly recommend this residential home to anyone with an elderly relative.
The staff have always been welcoming, and my mother has always been well cared for and happy; this has given me great comfort knowing
she is safe, especially during Covid when I have been unable to visit.
My mum loves the entertainment, and the staff have always shown her kindness, getting her to join in and making time to dance with her to music, as this is her favourite thing to do.
One carer, in particular, has gone above and beyond to care for my mum, and we will always be grateful for the care she has shown.

My mother spent the last few years of her life in St Phillip & St James, and at all times, the care and attention could not have been better. The staff were always very caring, nothing was too much trouble.
I cannot thank the directors and all their lovely staff enough.

My mother has lived at St Phillip's for over 3-years. Every time I see her, she tells me how kind the carers are.
Both owners and staff really care about the residents. It has been very difficult since Covid-19 for staff, residents and their friends and families.
Even under this pressure, all the
staff show constant care, consideration and friendship to the people living there. I hope with more freedom they will be able to go back to having outings and activities that were allowed before Covid.
It is a happy and fun house.
We are happy that we found such a lovely place, with a great reputation.
Thank you to everyone who works there.

My mum was at St Philips for over 9-years and only moved on when she needed a level of physical support and dementia care that required a specialist unit.
St Philips really was her home throughout that time. She made friends with other residents and with the staff. The staff were, without exception,
caring but also supportive of anything Mum was able to do for herself. Originally, Mum was well enough to go out for walks on her own, later they would go with her. There were times when Mum was very difficult to deal with. After a prolonged stay in the hospital, her dementia got suddenly much worse and Mum developed delirium. The staff were very patient with her, and it took some weeks, but Mum got almost back to how she was before. I don't think many residential homes would have been willing to give someone as much time and support to recover. This was a distressing time for me and for the rest of the family, but we were also helped by the staff throughout. My thanks to everyone at St Philips.

Our mum, who suffers from mixed dementia, moved into St Phillips & St James in October 2021 after being in another local care home for respite for 2-months. It was the best decision for our mum; she is now happy, settled and well cared for. We know we will be informed if there are any issues, and even
through all the Covid restrictions, we are made very to feel welcome whenever we visit.
I would not hesitate to recommend this residential care home to anyone.

Current Review Score: 8.1 (8.074)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.1 (8.074) out of 10 for St Phillip & St James is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.636 for St Phillip & St James is calculated as follows: ( (15 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 22 Ratings = 4.636

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.438 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Phillip & St James is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.4 = 0.313

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
