Bernash Care Home is a luxurious care home set in the heart of Bristol and offers dementia care, residential care, respite and day care.

Leaving home can be a challenging time, so to ensure the smoothest transition, Bernash Care Home boasts an authentic ‘home from home’ experience to help new residents settle.

Established since 1982, this traditional detached residential property, feels less like a hospital ward and more like a home. With only a maximum of 23 residents, this select group can comfortably interact and form new bonds.

The bedroom suites are designed to give residents luxury, privacy and independence. All rooms are equipped with TV and telephone points and a lift provides easy access to all first-floor suites. The majority of the bedrooms have an en-suite and the rooms are both spacious and comfortable.

All the bedrooms and en-suites have a nurse call point which offers residents rapid access to a carer 24 hours a day.

There are two separate lounges in which to socialise and enjoy the company of fellow residents. One of which is a quiet lounge, so there is plenty of opportunity for private moments by yourself or with your loved ones too.

Staff also recognise the importance of activities and invest a lot of time making sure residents enjoy every day. With dedicated activities co-ordinators, there is a full programme of events on a daily basis, many of which actively encourage participation from family, friends and the local community.

My auntie moved into Bernash Care Home; this was a hard decision for our family. But since she moved in, she has blossomed, and she loves being with other people. The staff are all lovely and very approachable, treating my auntie with dignity and respect. The activity lady is fantastic at getting everyone
to engage with activities. The manager has kept me informed daily about how my auntie was settling in. We could not be happier with the care she is receiving.

My sister was a resident until recently, as she is sadly no longer with us. I thought it was lovely that the manager attended the funeral after we reached out and invited her. My sister’s room was lovely and homely, just like the meals prepared every day - good home-cooked food! She was very comfortable
there and enjoyed the daily activities. I will miss visiting; the staff were so lovely and really looked after her.

My mum never wanted to admit she needed help and had always said she was not going into care but had become very depressed and lonely since my dad passed away.
Eventually, she agreed to go into Bernash Care Home for respite; I was devastated that as a family, we had to go through this heartbreak again,
but this has changed my mum; she is so happy at Bernash!
The staff, I cannot praise enough for their care and support for my mum. I have to admit, I was a mess in the first week, but the manager texted me daily to reassure me my mum was settled and happy; my mum now doesn’t want to go back home. The girls are absolutely amazing with her, and now, I reluctantly have to admit it’s the best thing I ever did for my lovely mum. It is so lovely to see her smile, laugh and engage with people again. Thank you, Bernash, for giving me my mum back!

My nan has been a resident for some time now, and I have visited her regularly. The staff have always been so welcoming to us as visitors, but the care they share towards my nan and the other residents is so lovely. I can just tell that my nan really enjoys it there. The food always looks lovely, and
she loves the activities! You always hear such bad things about care homes, but I honestly can’t fault it - the manager is amazing too.

All staff are friendly and so caring. It's been very reassuring to know that the residents have been very well cared for when we were not able to visit due to Covid. Now we are able to visit in person, we can see that everyone is happy.

My dad/best friend was a resident from July 2021 to March 13th 2022. We were happy with the care that our dad got and we knew Bernash have years of experience with Dementia we know dad was happy as this was his home and our family was really happy with how Bernash's staff looked after dad. The last
few days dad deteriorated and the doctor was called in so we were asked to go in and say our last goodbyes, which Bernash staff were all accommodating to our family. But when dad did pass only contact apart from our sister collecting dad's stuff there was no contact from the care home, no phone call or sympathy card and what was rather upsetting was no one from Bernash attended dad's funeral which showed a lack of respect and very unprofessional.
So writing this review I hope they look at themselves and try a lot better when it comes to the next family going through the heartache of losing a parent as we did.

With regards to no one attending your dad’s funeral, I can only apologise that you were upset by this, but we like to respect the family's wishes for a private ceremony and will only attend a funeral if invited by the family. Had you informed us of the date, I can assure you that the manager, would have definitely attended, just the same as she has done for many families. As you will see by the many wonderful reviews from families, our staff will always show respect and professionalism, so it is upsetting for staff to read such comments, but we will take your points on board. My Sister moved to Bernash Care Home from sheltered accommodation because her full care package was no longer sufficient for her needs. She has always found any change to routine very difficult to cope with and I admit to being very reticent about her ability to settle into Bernash, with the many differences
this would bring to her daily life. However, during her time at the home, the staff have done an amazing job of making her feel settled and part of a new community. They were quick to identify her worries and concerns and adapted her care accordingly. She is now happy and content in her new surrounding and I cannot thank all the team at Bernash enough for their excellent standard of care throughout my Sisters time at the home.

We were reluctant to let my mum in law go into a home, but we couldn’t have made a better choice. Although it was during covid and we were not able to visit personally, the manageress showed us around on a video call. We also had other people recommended Bernash Carwe Home whom had previously had a
resident there. Cannot believe how well my mum in law settled in. Very happy with the staff and it has such a relaxed atmosphere there, would highly recommend Bernash, it is lovely and clean, residences looked after well, cannot ask for any more. Thank you all.

My mum has recently moved into Bernash Care Home after her dementia worsened and unfortunately she could no longer manage living on her own. I must say it was a very difficult decision to make but all the fantastic staff at Bernash have gone above and beyond to make sure my mum is happy and settled
in her new home. Although some visiting restrictions are still in place, we really enjoy visiting my mum at Bernash and we always receive a warm welcome from the friendly and very helpful staff. It is great peace of mind when we leave to know that my mum is being well looked after.

My grandmother has been a resident at Bernash since 2018. All the staff are brilliant and nothing is ever too much trouble, especially during the pandemic, they have all worked extremely hard to ensure all the residents are well looked after. The home is nicely decorated and very clean and has a very
homely feel. The activities are brilliant and there is a lovely choice of meals each day. I would highly recommend Bernash to anyone who is looking for a care home for their loved one.

My mother-in-law has recently become a resident at Bernash. The manager and all the staff at Bernash have been fantastic in ensuring my mother-in-law is settling in and is happy. As a family, we are all really pleased with how she has settled in. Her bedroom is lovely and was newly decorated along
with fresh new carpet just before she moved in. Bernash has a lovely homely feel and is nicely decorated and very clean throughout, although we can only visit in the conservatory at present, we previously had a virtual tour and the whole home looks lovely. The activities look great fun and they often have themed events and afternoon teas. We are so happy that we chose Bernash for my mother-in-law after hearing so many great things and we have such great peace of mind knowing that she is being so well looked after.

Although restricted to the accessibility of the building due to the current situation of Covid 19 I find the help and the assistance of the staff is 100%, with their help and care given to all residents and visitors. Mum entered Bernash with dementia in January 2021. The constant care and compassion they show not only mum, but all the residents on a daily basis, especially during the covid pandemic. They went over and above what I ever could have expected, and for mum her days in their care are always full of laughter
and happiness, which in mums circumstances is all we could really have hoped for. The best thing I could say is if I ever need care, Bernash is where I’d want to be.

We were really very sad when we had to admit we could no longer care for Dad in his own home. So it was a very hard decision to look for a care home for him. But at Bernash they have helped him settle in so quickly and are so caring and thoughtful it has put our minds at rest to know he's well looked
after and safe. The staff are all so friendly and always ready to answer any questions, I know we made the right choice.

Shelley

Shelley Turnbull

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2016

Shelley came to Bernash Care Home after successfully managing a local Dementia Care Home for over nine years. She started her career as a Care Assistant in 1997 and quickly moved through the ranks, completing IOSH Certificate in Health & Safety and Dementia Care Level 2, NVQ Level 4 in Health & Social Care, and Leadership & Management Level 5. Shelley’s ambition as a child was to become a nurse, but by default moved into a leadership and management role within the care sector. She arrived at Bernash Care Home in August 2016 and successfully assisted Corporate Management to effect change and gain the confidence of CQC to award us with an overall ‘Good’ rating. Outside of work Shelley likes to spend time with her children, enjoyed Arts and Crafts, socialising with friends and holidaying at her caravan in Westbay.


Jo

Jo Coles

Job Title: Team Leader

Joined: 2018

Jo Coles has worked in Care since 2009, working her way up from carer to team leader. Jo has completed an NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care. She has also completed a Level 2 in Dementia Care, End of Life Care, Nutrition and Equality and Diversity. In her spare time, Jo enjoys socialising with friends, spending time with her children, grandchildren and her 3 dogs.

Marion Wilcox or “Maz” as she likes to be known has worked at Bernash Care Home for six years. She has completed her care certificate and prior to joining the team at Bernash, she worked in nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals and with learning difficulties. She has a passion for working in the care sector – to her, caring is not just a job, it’s a vocation and she enjoys making a difference to someone’s life. Katie has been working in care for 17 years, with experience gained at the BRI Hospital for 3 years as well Bernash. Katie enjoys socialising with the residents and bringing a smile to their faces. At home, Katie enjoys spending time with her children and sewing children’s toys.

Meg has worked at Bernash for 8 years, starting as a part time care assistant and working her way up to Team Leader. Laura has worked at Bernash since December 2018. Laura started as Domestic but soon moved to Cooking for the residents and is now our Administrator, so Laura has good knowledge of various roles within the home. Laura previously worked for a top law firm within Bristol and has also gained qualifications including NVQ levels 2 & 3 in Business Administration and a Diploma in Legal Accounts. Laura has a passion for working with the elderly, especially residents with dementia after experiencing her grandparents suffer with the illness and helped care for them for many years. Laura’s interests outside of work is spending time with her daughter and other family and friends including her dog ‘Marley’.
