Katherine House is a purpose-built residential home designed to maximise views, natural light and a sense of well-being for each resident.

Fully qualified and experienced staff provide ‘24-hour’ round-the-clock care as well as respite care for those with low-level needs. The residents' individual needs are constantly monitored and their care is reviewed and updated on a regular basis.

The design of the home ensures all areas are easy to navigate and are relaxing places for the residents. The home offers spacious en-suite bedrooms equipped with an electric bed, flat-screen television, telephone and comfortable, modern furniture. Residents are also encouraged to personalise their rooms to create a ‘homely’ environment.

There are opportunities for residents to stimulate interests and participate in activities which includes in-house entertainment as well as local trips into the community.

Poor manager. My Mum was thrown out by e-mail on a Friday night. Took the best part of 6 weeks to get monies refunded. Shambles. This place has really gone downhill but I would still like to sincerely thank some of the old staff.

Unfortunately, when residents remain in hospital, we always reassess them once they have had a stay in hospital as at times, their needs do change, so safety is paramount to us. Mum moved into the home from assisted housing which was not suitable for her at all.
She now has a lovely room, which is always spotless.
She is so well looked after and all the staff are amazing, couldn't ask for more.

Mum was determined to remain living independently, but she became too frail to do this safely. She moved into Katherine House the day after her 98th birthday. The transition wasn’t easy but Mum had exceptional support from the staff, above and beyond, what might have been expected. Six weeks after moving
in Mum is beginning to thrive. She is enjoying the meals. Her mobility has improved. I saw her walk a distance today, more strongly, than she has been able to in a year. The afternoon activities not only occupy her but stimulate her too. Her mood has lifted. Mum has received high-quality medical and professional care which has improved the quality of her life but it’s the indefinable conscientious qualities of the staff of Katherine House that make such a difference. There has been a genuinely kind willingness to support Mum and to ensure all that could be done has been done to ensure her wellbeing. My experience of Katherine House is that there is energy and knowledgeable goodwill in abundance.

Our mother moved from a different care home about a year ago after developing signs of dementia. We have been very pleased with the care and kindness which she has received. The care home is well run, clean and nicely furnished. We are happy to recommend this establishment.

My mum needed to move into Katherine House 9 months ago. She was then 91 and getting frail. She took a bit of time to settle in but is now extremely happy there and sees it as her home. She appreciates the home-cooked food, the care she gets, and the company. She also comments on the comfort and convenience
of her room, access to the library, and increasingly enjoys the activities that are laid on. Inevitably she worries about the money but now readily agrees that it is well spent. As a visitor, I am kept well informed and even during times of Covid. The grounds and buildings have a lovely inviting feel about them.

My aunt has been a resident at Katherine House for several years. During that time she has received the very best of care.
She is happy and enjoys the high quality of Katherine House and the excellent staff who are kind and attentive.
The food quality is very good and when she has requested any particular
food item that is not on the menu it has invariably been happily provided.
Katherine House is always clean and completely odour free - something that can't be said of many care homes.
The staff are friendly, helpful and caring.
I know others who are or have been resident at Katherine House, all of whom have enjoyed it.
I would thoroughly recommend Katherine House to anyone seeking a happy, warm and caring home for themselves or a member of their family.

My mother has been a resident for almost seven years. The staff have done everything they can to make it a happy and safe place to live in. All her needs are provided for. Her room is cleaned regularly. The privacy of an en suite wet room is perfect for her needs. The room is a reasonable size and accommodates
some of her own furniture. There is a television and also a private telephone line. She has her own pictures on the wall. Breakfast is served in her room and other meals in the dining room, but they can be saved in her room if needed. The staff have been very caring over the last year, and we had to leave very much up to them as we were unable to visit in the home. However, video calling was set up and a sealed room has been established for visiting. The grounds are lovely, and we cannot wait to get outside again and sit in the sun with Mum. The staff, the well-being team, the cooks and the cleaners are all amazing. Thank you.

For all independent people moving into a care home can be a major challenge. Katherine House staff manage this transition on behalf of its new residents in a friendly and welcoming manner. The whole team is highly professional and after one year my Mother now feels safe and 'at home'. I have nothing
but praise for the entire team - and especially their kindness and resilience throughout the current pandemic which has been kept at bay by their hard work and dedication.

This is home to 40 people - a real home. Residents are encouraged to make friends and join in everything on offer. The offer is very broad and well-considered. Staff at the home have made many contacts with outside organisations and charities that assist in improving the lives of residents in the home.
Many activities are provided each day. The day is exceptionally well structured and all residents are treated as individuals with a high degree of independence. Whilst my uncle has slowly deteriorated in his capacity to make decisions, he has improved in many other ways since he started living in his ‘new home’. He is more mobile, he has more friends and close companies, he is more engaged in activity and creativity and he is more outspoken on all issues relating to older people in care. I know it’s difficult and expensive but broadening opportunities after dinner in the evening would be beneficial to some residents.

My mum has been a resident at Katherine House for over 4 years now and I cannot recommend this home highly enough. If our family have any concerns regarding Mum's health then we know it will be acted on quickly. Staff really seem to enjoy working in the home and care for the residents. They seem to
have a genuine affection for Mum, pay her compliments when she has had her hair done or she is wearing something new or different.
Safeguarding could have been an issue due to Mum's divorce but we were always reassured the correct procedures were in place to ensure it was carried out as requested.
Afternoon activities are always available for all residents which are varied and suit all types of abilities and needs. Mum attends these which has included external visits to local sites and attractions.

The care given to my Mum is exemplary. Very professional, caring and stimulating. The staff are very patient and kind.
The home is purpose built for residents living with dementia. It is very light and airy, furnished to a high standard which makes it a very comfortable place to live. There is access
to a lovely patio area which has raised flowerbeds and plenty of places to sit.
A daily programme of activities is designed for the residents to join in if they choose to.
We as a family highly recommend the care home.

Katherine House staff give all the residents respect, dignity and outstanding care. The staff go over and above their duties to ensure all the residents are happy and feel cared for.
The rooms are bright and airy and it is no problem adding some personal items to make it seem more like home.

Generally, Katherine House is a good institution. It is pleasant to visit and the staff are friendly, caring and nice. My mother has been there for three years and feels that she is in the best place. Her only real complaint is the food. You would have to judge for yourself. The rooms vary a bit in
size and outlook, with the ones at the back getting the sunset view and on the ground floor direct access to the terrace but they possibly get a bit hot in the summer.
I feel the staff and management do try and make a difference.
Locally there are some large grounds just above Katherine House which some residents visit and I take my mum in her wheelchair which is a nice convenient excursion, albeit there is a fairly steep climb. The Downs are also quite handy.
Parking is easy, I don't think there has ever been a time with no space available.

The location of the care home is excellent in that it is in a peaceful setting within its own grounds but very accessible by public transport. It was also important to us that it is a charity and not privately run for profit. Approaching the building, it has been very sympathetically built for its surroundings.
It is single story and has been well designed using low impact materials and colours. Inside, the striking feature is the amount of natural light which has a calming effect. Large windows in the walls and the ceiling which let the daylight flood in. It is nicely open planned, and very pleasing furniture and colour schemes. It has been clearly well thought out.

Hillman said that “old age is not just a preparation for death, it is a phase of life in its own right”. At the care home, the managers are successfully pursuing a vision of community which, coupled with the care and patience of the staff enables this to be a place in which my mother’s closing years
can be a creative opportunity for connection and communication, not just a waiting room. When looking for a place for my mother I talked to friends working in the caring professionals who have worked shifts in care homes all over Bristol, and Katherine&Griffiths House were consistently highly recommended.

Leanne Thorne is Cote Manager at Katherine House Rest Home.


I have worked in Social Care for 26 years and have a variety of experience in elderly/Dementia, learning disabilities and mental health settings. This included 15 years working for South Gloucestershire council in all their residential care home homes, five years at Frenchay House residential care home and working as a strategic manager for another Charity.


I trained as an NVQ Assessor to support staff gain their qualifications as well as working with a training provider delivering NVQs to care homes across the Southwest. I became a mental health champion to support staff and residents to understand their own mental health challenges.


I am a very nurturing manager and enjoy supporting staff to increase their skill set to enable career progression.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

I have 35 years of experience working in different care settings specialising in mental health/psychology, dementia, and residential/nursing care of the elderly. My role is to provide support to the management of the home, delivering the highest standards of care/support that our residents deserve.
I manage an extensive training/assessment, and competency programme for staff to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to deliver exceptional care to the highest of standards. It is important to me that our residents receive the best quality of life through daily fulfilment, excellent care and services and a home where they feel valued, respected, empowered and treated as unique individuals with their own wishes and choices, creating a home from home environment.

I started hairdressing at Cote House, another part of the Cote Charity, in 1990 when one of my clients became a resident. Before I knew it, more and more residents were asking me to do their hair and since then I have been visiting every Wednesday.


I deliberately didn't go and see Katherine House while it was being built. I just wanted to see the end product. It is breathtaking - light and airy and so modern. The reception you get when you come in is lovely - everyone is so welcoming to anyone who walks through the door. There's a really special atmosphere and always so much going on for residents, which I also like to get involved in - I've even been known to dress up as Father Christmas!
I consider myself really lucky. I've been hairdressing for 37 years and my job is my hobby.
